Stop Forcing Meta Horizon Link to Start With Windows - This is MY PC

I want to formally complain about the way Meta Horizon Link handles application startup on Windows.

Meta Horizon Link automatically launches every time Windows starts, without providing the user with a clear and functional option to disable this behavior.

This is unacceptable for desktop software.

I have checked both the Meta Horizon Link settings and the standard Windows Startup Apps settings. There is no straightforward “Start Meta Horizon Link with Windows” option that I can simply turn off.

Instead, users are apparently expected to find and modify Windows system services, such as:

Oculus VR Runtime Service → Startup type → Manual

In other words, instead of providing a basic application setting, Meta has effectively pushed users toward system-level workarounds just to prevent its application from launching.

This is not a reasonable user experience.

I am not asking to disable Quest Link, VR functionality, or the services required for the headset to work.

I simply do not want Meta Horizon Link to launch every time I start my computer.

If I want to use Meta Horizon Link or Quest Link, I am perfectly capable of launching the application myself.

The user should have a simple and explicit setting:

[ ] Start Meta Horizon Link with Windows

If the user disables this option, it should remain disabled permanently, including after application updates.

I should not have to:

  • search through Windows system services;
  • modify service startup modes;
  • edit the Windows Registry;
  • create scripts or workarounds;
  • disable Meta/Oculus background components;

just to prevent an application from opening when Windows starts.

This is my computer, and I decide which applications are allowed to start with Windows.

The fact that users have to resort to unofficial workarounds to disable something that should be a basic application setting is an embarrassing failure of desktop software UX.

What makes this particularly frustrating is that this issue has already been reported by other users, yet Meta still does not provide an obvious, user-controlled opt-out.

I am therefore asking Meta to:

  1. Add a clearly visible “Start Meta Horizon Link with Windows” setting.
  2. Make the setting user-controlled and persistent.
  3. Respect the user's choice after application updates.
  4. Stop using hidden or non-obvious mechanisms to launch the application without an explicit user preference.
  5. Make it possible to disable the application's automatic startup without requiring system-level workarounds.

Stop forcing Meta Horizon Link to start with Windows and give users a real opt-out.

This should be a basic requirement for any desktop application.

PS: This issue has already been reported here:

This is a community user forum, there are no longer any Meta employees here, they will not see your post.

The Horizon Link PC app no longer launches automatically on Windows startup. It's been like that for a while. The background services will still run, however, to keep the app up to date and to make the app auto-start when you click the Link button in your headset.

When I start up my computer, there are maybe three times in quick succession that it asks me for permissions to do things, and even if I deny all of them, it changes all my audio settings to the VR headset, which is infuriating. If I want to change over to my headset, I will make that decision. I wish it would not be doing all this every time I start my computer; I have a whole list of things I need to set back to the way I have them normally each time.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get it to stop changing all my audio settings??
