Question

Add optional "IGNORE" feature to the forums.

There's a lot of noise
on these forums and it has caused my right index finger to grow unnaturally
large and muscular from all the exercise it gets scrolling past posts with
questionable value in otherwise interesting threads, usually attributable to
the same individuals.  It's like an itch that won't quit.  Therefore, I think it would be nice to have an "IGNORE"
feature available tied to user accounts.

Vote and/or voice your righteous opinion below.

Everyone on the forum has always possessed the ability to ignore what you write.  The addition of this feature just makes execution less cumbersome.

The function in no way censors what you write on the forum, it's a passive function that only affects the experience of the individual.

I don't understand the objection to it.

I never voted because the options didn't suit my opinion.

    • YES - That could come in handy.
I don't think it should be implemented - no vote

    • NO - The 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees my right to annoy others (tough shit, deal with it!)
I'm not American and don't have a first amendment and the US constitution doesn't apply - no vote

    • Let's use our real names and let it all hang out.
    just no - no vote

    • Move to China.
border line racist, possibly xenophobic, not sure of the correct term here - no vote

If there was "No", then that would have had my vote.
I believe the poll being created and a few other members of the vocal minority constantly requesting it has empowered Cyber to create their safe space to shut them up

This is my forum signature. There are many others like it, but this is mine.

Wait a sec. Based on just 13 people in favour of having an ignore feature you went with it. Hmmm that's hardly representing the community here. Seems more like pandering to a vocal minority.

Umm, only 8 people voted against it, so aren't those in favour the vocal majority? :)

    Pedantic much?

I think you are fully aware of what I mean. There are far more forum users than the 20 odd who bothered to cast a vote in the poll posted here.  I guess the majority of users simply do not care or just didn't vote.  I think if you cast your minds back to the hive of activity there was with regards to "should there be a separate vive forum".  Lots of people wanted that but Cyber didn't pander to the demands of the many and just let it be. Interesting then that a few remarks on a feature most people couldn't give a toss monkeys about gets the green light - especially when numerous people (including moderators of other forums) remark on how it's not such a great idea in practice.

Like @elboffor above, I didn't vote due to the silly way the poll was worded. I posted to express my opinion about an Ignore feature (I don't care for it), but I guess that's not reflected in the poll results.

I suppose this is the new way to get what you want; make a poll in which you can agree with the OP, or choose the other option (being a jerk-off idiot). Like-minded members can vote their agreement, people who disagree abstain, and the OP achieves the appearance of overwhelming support.

Anyway, I'm not going to throw a fit over it, I just won't use the Ignore feature.

So, If you ignore a person all that happens is their posts are hidden unless you click the header above the hidden post so you can still read if desired.  Seems like a hack/mod of the dislike feature this forum had not so long ago.

So let me get this straight. This way means if you ignore someone who makes posts which you mostly 100% don't like because all they post is "GTFO lol, SMH, rofl, :D :) :p Oculus Sucks, viva Vive"  you can cut them out of the conversation. However if they speak a bit of sense you can still click and read their post.  However, the filter DOES NOT  ignore their posts if they have been quoted. So...you still see their posts.

    SMH.

What a waste of time. Much like many things I can't fathom about these forums (the previous profanity censor being one of them) this is another negative addition that serves no real purpose. If you're gonna have an ignore function then make sure it ignores properly as in you can't read their posts period, you can't see them being quoted and if you "unignore" (is that a word or something cyber made up?) - correct word would be  acknowledge -  you have to wait 48 hours before you can see their posts again.

     >:)

    ANNNNDDD.

You can only ignore a maximum of 5 people. Is that a limit imposed because if it's more your morality and social skills are called into question. You have to seriously look at your life and ascertain whether you're the one with issues and need help.

Ignore is the antithesis of social discussion/interaction.

It's hardly useless.  I think most people agree with that, hence the poll status so far.

I don't know about you, but I don't use this except to ignore people who spam or troll.  Trolls would pretty much be rendered mute and they would move on from boredom because reactive stimuli no longer is present.

The word "Troll" is over-used and abused in this day and age. People call anyone who disagrees with them a Troll, and end up using an Ignore list as a weapon. Which is what makes it useless as a beneficial utility.

Completely agree with this, and in fact... in this case you are 100% correct.

kevin, the OP, posted this thread
immediately after I typed a response to him that he didn't like in another
    thread:
    https://forums.oculus.com/community/discussion/comment/481383/#Comment_481383

However, prior to my post to kevin, he had made a chastising response to jayhawk:
    https://forums.oculus.com/community/discussion/comment/481370/#Comment_481370

So we can already see how this Ignore List feature is going to be used:

    1) jayhawk makes a new thread about VR
    2) kevink808 chastises jayhawk
    3) zenbane chastises kevink808
    4) kevink808 scrambles to find the Ignore List

People want to be able to talk poop without getting poop back, which isn't the best reason to have an Ignore List. In this case it will only be used as a tool to extend someones negative behavior and intentions. I've seen this many times on many forums. But perhaps we need to play it out for awhile. I anticipate the end-result will be similar to what I've seen in years past... people who actually use the Ignore List will end up feeling left out of many discussions and not understand the jokes people are saying.

    Good times ahead lol

kevink808 did what? lol. Ignore buttons are for cowards. besides, at what point are so many ignoring each other the whole forum dies. You have to also factor in the stupidity of the people that think they are doing the right thing. As in your reply to Kevink, who is deciding what a 'troll' is? Today it's anyone who doesn't share your same ideals.

I love your passion about this topic, @ShadowMask72 lol

I presume that as the community is growing, this Ignore function will essentially serve as a filter for the Mod's... to help reduce the number of PM's they receive of people complaining about other people.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with your sentiment on the matter completely. And nalex said some great stuff as well on the topic.

Cyber did say that he made his decision based on the many long months of this request popping up. I don't think this Poll or Thread played much of a role in finally getting the Ignore feature pushed through. For example, this probably would have happened anyway after my next big debate with someone lol

The reason I don't knock Cyber on this decision is because I know it is a daunting task trying to "keep the peace" amongst so many dueling personalities. And yes, it is fairly obvious that people like the OP of this thread were making the request for the wrong reasons; but at the same time, the Ignore feature just might save me from a Perma-Ban lmao

If we look at the type of folks who want to use the Ignore feature... there really is no great loss. At all. Every time they add someone to their Ignore list, they are only creating walls around themselves - limiting their own views and experiences in the community. It can be quite self-depricating. Which is why what ends up happening often is their need to publicly announce an Ignore with phrases like, "Is someone there? I can't hear you? Ignored."

Originally I was a bit concerned that the Ignore feature would function similar to a Facebook "block," which makes following conversations absolutely painful. Luckily Cyber picked a plug-in that is far less intrusive. And of course, if it turns out to be a bad idea then I have full confidence in Cyber's resolve to remove the plug-in. But all things considered, I doubt that will be necessary.

    Besides, the folks whom I love to read: @Zoomie, @ShadowMask72, @nalex66, @OpticKing, @vannagirl, @elboffor, @CrashFu, @kojack, @Techy111, @KillCard, @kzintzi, @GenetixStudio, @EliteSpa, @Syndroid, @Warbloke, @RorschachPhoenix, @snowdog, @pjenness, @FrozenPea, @Greyman, @andyring, @zboson, @Mr.Creepy , @lovethis, @falken76 ... to name a few. Just that list alone is enough to keep a thriving community moving forward. And I know I left some fine folks out (got tired of typing).

Plus newcomers like @arttek and @YoLolo69 are quickly becoming great additions.

Those who are here and "need" an Ignore feature... are doing it wrong :p
