In my opinion Windows 98 SE is the king of OS's. I'm not a fan of forcing upgrades either but sometimes it is neccesary. Though, Windows 10 was there last windows release which I find extremely pleasant and stable. It hasn't crashed on me in 2 years at all.
now if we want to talk about really bad companies with crappy hardware, then that award goes to Compaq!

Yes, I miss those blue screen crashes in Windows 98, or was it Windows 95?
Interesting that you are talking about a Surface Pro 5 in a good way though. My company gives these things away to employees, but you end up in the "hall of shame" if you actually use one in public lol
Our company gave some of us Compaq iPaqs back in the day, we thought Christmas had come early. We were supposed to do things like refer to wiring regulations and even take copies of CAD drawings around for reference, never going to happen on a screen that small.
What we did do was have Tomtom software installed and with a BT GPS receive we had a proper satnav back around 2002 around the same time as the first purpose build satnavs.... and we played games. Basically a smartphone 5 or 6 years before the first iPhone, except without the phone bit.

Hehe, glad I work at a good company then. :)
You're a teacher, right? Do you work for an actual big tech company?
Yes, I'm a teacher. I work at a college. In fact I'm sitting in front of a room of students making VR projects for an external client right now.
Teaching is great. I did it for awhile in a smaller setting, and I do plan to teach again one day soon. I can see myself teaching well after my official retirement years.
In academia though, the tech is more forgiving. Compared to a tech company, where everyone rags on you for making certain choices. It's like that at MS, Amazon, Netflix, Facebook, and Google. It has nothing to do with a 'good' vs 'bad' company; it's all about the setting.
I recall your recent post about how you were demo'ing robo recall to your students, and when you took off your Rift they weren't paying attention. I've had similar experiences back when I was teaching and I brought in my Cardboard VR. Students are in a different mindset in school. But if I bring my Rift to work... omfg it's on!
But last time I had to deal with stuff like that was when I was a teenager at high school when PC owners would tell me that the Amiga wasn't a real computer because it was good at games. :)
