Question

Far Cry 5

Anybody been playing it - what are your thoughts? I don't want to really discuss the "political" aspects of this game because they are superficial at best and honestly not really worth discussing.

I am about 8 hours in (I had all of yesterday off, woohoo!!!) - I am not going to put any spoilers in this thread. But hot damn - I haven't really enjoyed a Far Cry game since the first one - but FC5 is just brilliant.

I have read the reviews - and yes there are problems with the gameplay in as far as there are lots of systems interacting with each other all the time. It is a game where you don't really have a moments rest - and the story / narrative isn't as deep as it possibly could be. It is closer to the farcical GTA series than it is to anything more serious - which is a bit of a shame because the setting is very well realized and interesting to explore, but it doesn't feel dangerous or creepy very often and I think that is a missed mark.

However it is just extremely fun to play. Before it was released I was picked up Far Cry 3 where I last left off (Vaas kicking me into a hole with a cement block tied around my feet). I played it for about two hours - and just became bored with it. I was worried that my pre-order of Far Cry 5 would end up being a mistake purchase that I'd want to refund before long. But it is not - the gameplay mechanics, environment and mission design are all superb and it is sustaining my interest completely.

So far I am about 75% done John Seed's area - and am planning on completing it 100% before moving on to the next area.

It's on my list of games, might wait for a deal, haven't finished playing Assasins Creed Origins, which is just gorgeous and such a trip being able to explore ancient Egypt in an open world.

I am looking forward to getting AC:O - I have only ever played the 3rd and 4th AC games and didn't get very far into them. But everything I have seen of Origins looks like they fixed the issues I had with the series - kind of the same thing they did with FC5, and honestly even Watch Dogs 2 was much more fun than I expected it to be. I am kind of happy with Ubisoft right now, which is a weird thing to say. LOL

Almost done with this now. Very fun game but still has some annoying quirks. At least there are no towers to climb to reveal the map. I am torn as to whether I prefer this over Wildlands. I guess both games have their pros and cons. Both games are actually very similar in design.

Yeah Watch Dogs 1 was a let down (however a lot has been fixed by the modding community, better graphics, mechanics, etc)

AC:O is the first AC series I have thoroughly enjoyed, the visuals are spectacular, sometimes Ill just play to take a horse ride against an Ancient Egypt backdrop. They also have a Tour mode, so all combat is disabled, no quests but instead you get a Virtual Tour Guide that takes you on a journey through Ancient Egypt.

I skipped on Wildlands because I think it looks more fun with co-op - and I mostly play single player. It is still on my wishlist in Steam for when it goes on sale.

Definitely still some annoying quirks - I find stealth works better than it ever did in FC3, and I like that I can hide bodies now. But I think the AI is kind of really dumb from time to time (still deadly though). I think encounters could be toned down a little and it could be more difficult to outfit your character with decent weapons which would make the setting feel more dangerous and severe.

But - it is just so damn fun to play that I don't mind. I love that there is no towers and everything is found naturally now - and for whatever reason the side activities actually feel fun this time, more like quests than chores which is awesome.

Watch Dogs was definitely a let down - haven’t gone back to it since I beat the story. I have the story DLC to get to - but I got ubi icon fatigue trying to beat the side missions lol

All my friends love AC:O for the reasons you mention - I can’t wait to get it.

The enemy being on your case was one of the main gameplay killers ever since Far Cry 2. It seems Ubisoft still doesn't want you to blend in and then employ guerrilla tactics fully which is a shame because the story setting does seem to favour that style of play -  to a degree you still can though. However, it becomes too annoying when one set of AI triggers an event when you're scoping another and thus ruins your stealth/planning in the process. A bit more anonymity when traversing the open-world would work wonders and is easily fixed by having a GTA style wanted system or faction system for those who get too sloppy and deserve to have the world kick yer ass as soon as you poke your tiny toe outside of a safe area.

At least enemy air support isn't overpowered like it is in Wildlands.  It was the biggest pain in the butt ever especially as there were no counters unless you went full rambo. Wildlands does have a lot more visual variety than Far Cry 5 though which works in its favour, but the whole killing the drug cartel isn't as interesting as religious zealots even if the presentation of the main characters (in Wildlands) was very good.

Edit: I am just waiting (like everyone else) for Ubisoft to officially announce Splinter Cell Next using similar systems but in a more populated city location like you see in Watch Dogs 2 (San Francisco).

I'd be stoked for an open world Splinter Cell game - so long as they get the stealth right.

I am fine with the lack of visual variety in the setting for FC5 - but like you say, a faction based wanted system could do wonders for making the game as busy or not as you want it to. That said - mission to mission I am having tons of fun and the stealth works fairly well for the outpost missions.

The game definitely empowers the player right from the get go - even though I have died lots, I have never encountered a situation yet that I didn't feel I could beat with the tools available to me. I would love to see a mod for it that drastically reduced the random encounters - but also put the player at a severe disadvantage (slower walk/run speed, weapon degradation, limited ammo reserves, higher buy in on prestige weapons/outfits, perks unlocked slower, etc.). There is enough of the game both in missions / extra activities and world exploration to support a slower more survival based experience that the setting kind of touches on before going full action movie within 30 minutes or so.

As it stands though - it is a blast to play and most of the gameplay mechanics are spot on.

Do you remember this concept for Conviction which got canned. I believe some of this went on to become Watch Dogs. I reckon Ubi are working with similar systems for the next game.

I did realize that Conviction was originally meant to be so different - some cool concepts in there. I liked near the end he pushes a shelving unit to block a door.

I mean playing the first Watch Dogs it is pretty easy to see some core concepts it shares with many Ubi titles including Splinter Cell - and I didn't really hate the story of the first one (everybody was put off by the main character - I wasn't so much. There was enough motivation from the narrative to give Aiden a sense of purpose, and so what if he was a little unlikable and bland).

The second Watch Dogs - I got it at Christmas on sale, and I am very happy with it. I mean I don't really identify with the characters as much - but the gameplay is more refined and varied and the game runs and looks great.

I think Ubi is learning that people don't want just boxes to check off in a sandbox environment. There needs to be a degree of purpose to each task and they need to be varied. So far what I have found with Far Cry 5 - is that they are. I have completed 30 some of the missions in John Seed's area - and while there are similar missions (outposts, prepper stash's, etc. all share similar objectives) they are different enough from location to location so that they don't feel like carbon copies of each other. Maybe I feel a little differently by the end of the game - but so far it is not trending that way.

Where as with the first Watch Dogs - every single side mission felt like a complete copy of one another and became a grind to complete as I worked through the map.
