Question

Far Cry 5

Anybody been playing it - what are your thoughts? I don't want to really discuss the "political" aspects of this game because they are superficial at best and honestly not really worth discussing.

I am about 8 hours in (I had all of yesterday off, woohoo!!!) - I am not going to put any spoilers in this thread. But hot damn - I haven't really enjoyed a Far Cry game since the first one - but FC5 is just brilliant.

I have read the reviews - and yes there are problems with the gameplay in as far as there are lots of systems interacting with each other all the time. It is a game where you don't really have a moments rest - and the story / narrative isn't as deep as it possibly could be. It is closer to the farcical GTA series than it is to anything more serious - which is a bit of a shame because the setting is very well realized and interesting to explore, but it doesn't feel dangerous or creepy very often and I think that is a missed mark.

However it is just extremely fun to play. Before it was released I was picked up Far Cry 3 where I last left off (Vaas kicking me into a hole with a cement block tied around my feet). I played it for about two hours - and just became bored with it. I was worried that my pre-order of Far Cry 5 would end up being a mistake purchase that I'd want to refund before long. But it is not - the gameplay mechanics, environment and mission design are all superb and it is sustaining my interest completely.

So far I am about 75% done John Seed's area - and am planning on completing it 100% before moving on to the next area.

I absolutely LOVE open world sandbox FPS  games if they're done right.

I feel Far Cry 3+4 hit the mark. I missed me guns in Primal.

I'm around 15 hours into Far Cry 5, and basically it's just more of the same, but slightly refined.  And in my book that's still a fucking good game.

Much more content in a new great setting along with AAA presentation and less tedious grinding. Alas, it seems the underlying core engine is still the same as it in FC3. So you still get TOTALLY retarded a.i. (especially noticeable on the friendly NPC's) and a fuck ton of bugs.

VR games on pause right now :)

They definitely need to update the AI in the game - but the engine isn't showing it's age to much. The game looks absolutely stunning - I am running it 1080p Ultra Settings and get steady 60fps most of the time on a GTX970. I think the draw distance could be extended a little further across the board for both object detail and shadows - but overall it looks great and runs very smooth.

Getting rid of the towers and letting me unlock the map at my own pace is my favourite refinement for the series - and completely renewed my interest in it as well. Other than playing FC4 on PS4 for 2 or 3 hours and FC3 for maybe 15 hours total I completely skipped on the series. I do have Blood Dragon installed - but I never made it through the tutorial on that one.

I don't think I will likely go back and finish those games because of FC5 - but I am now looking forward to seeing where they take it next.

Oh - and I might still get Primal. The concept always interested me - but I still haven't bought it. I may get it next time it is on sale if I have some spare steam money.

@SimonSays28  - When you're done  with FC5, you really need to go back to FC3. The environment, story and the characters in that one is second to none in the series.

Primal has an awesome environment and cool pets, but the combat is just lacking imo. Oh and it was lacking  a certain something...

    @Wildt

I picked up FC3 again shortly before getting into FC5 - I played it for about 2 hours but couldn't really remember where I was in the story. I got to a point where I was fighting a big nightmare demon in front of a temple and died a few times and haven't gone back.

I might go back after FC5 though - I was trying to stealth my way through FC3 and I think if I take the more guns blazing approach I have been doing with FC5 I might have more fun.

As for Primal - LOL, I know but I am more interested in it for the survival mode and setting. I kind of wish there was a survival mode for FC5. Best of both worlds - more realistic unencumbered gameplay and some of the best explosions I've seen in a game.

Really enjoyed the 1st 2 games in the series, absolutely loved the combat in FC2 with fires breaking out mid fight in the dry grasses etc due to the odd explosion. Loved the whole "Hearts of Darkness" type atmosphere of it.

Didn't think much of FC3 but still played it to completion and did the co-op missions with a mate. The whole setting just felt too theme park like and contrived. Lots of useless pickups that were there only for the sake of dinging achievements and nothing else. Main protagonist was a twat, and in fact the only likeable character in the game was that German merc on the second island. Didn't bother with FC4 after that.

So rather looking forward to playing this one.

I like it so far, I think I'm maybe 2/3rds done (2 of 3 regions cleared, not counting side missions). The story so far is definitely more interesting than FC4 but I'm not sure it lives up to FC3 yet. Though, the kidnapping game mechanic could have been better implemented. I'm really not a fan of how you just pass out and poof, you're in a main story bit regardless of what was going on previously. I think FC4 did boss fights better too, FC5's boss fights so far don't actually involve any fighting for the most part. They are more of a minimally interactive cutscene (as in walking, forwards only) which magically result in the boss's death, somehow, because reasons. It may make more sense upon completion, we'll see.

Combat is pretty much identical to FC3 and 4, so I'm generally happy with it. They've also simplified the crafting system for the better. No more hunting around for 30 minutes for 3 more pairs of bear2341 pelts to craft a lvl1 ammo pouch and then repeating for the drug pouch lvl4 upgrade too or other such nonsense.

Oh, and they finally got rid of all those stupid towers. They even poke fun at it during the tutorial-ish section. I didn't like them in FC3 and they definitely haven't grown on me with time. Now the map reveals itself by just visiting it. It's a much more sensible and natural system.

Imo FC3 had a more engaging story with more epic missions. The main missions in FC4 and 5 just seem like beefed up side missions really.

Well, since I'm knee deep in this game, lemme exemplify what makes this fun for me.

I was on this mission on a big boat, and (I forget their names) my mate with the plane is chewing up people out side, and the dude with the incendiary shots is along with me. He manages to shoot a black bear who somehow chased us onboard, so now it's on fire and starts mauling a peggie and as I have the furious powerup (super human strength), I decide to kick the bear in the nuts from behind rocketing both the bear and the peggie ON FIRE into the water...   fuck me that was a glorious sight.

I know it is just so much fun - I have 9 more missions to complete in John Seed's area, then I am moving to Faith's. So I am almost a 3rd of the way through. Honestly one of these areas could almost qualify as a complete game - considering I have almost 10 hours of gameplay time in according to uplay.

Only open world games do it for me now, I still love going for a drive in GTAV, or exploring the world of The Witcher 3 ..  traverse ancient Egypt in AC:Origins, blow some alien scum in Mass Effect or just take a stroll in san Francisco in Watch Dogs 2
