Ideas for meta quest 4s

Why the Quest 4S needs to be a re-badged Q3 with Q4 guts and zero fan to dominate at $350. With the Quest 3S taking the low end by cutting corners on optics using Fresnel lenses and Q2 shells, Meta’s long-term play for the Quest 4S should be a total mass-market retention monster. They don't need to reinvent the wheel here, just recycle the Quest 3 chassis and pancake lenses 100% because those optics are already crisp, sweet-spot headaches are gone, and yield rates are high so BOM costs are cheap now. Inside, slap in the next-gen Quest 4 chip but ditch the mechanical fan entirely for a passive vapor chamber setup since most people play in air-conditioned rooms anyway, which saves weight, kills noise, cuts battery drain, and stops front-heavy neck strain after long sessions. Storage needs to start at 256GB minimum with a 512GB option because massive games like Batman and Asgard's Wrath make 128GB unplayable without constantly deleting stuff. For controllers, keep IR tracking simple but elongate the tracking ring slightly so users can loop the default wrist straps through to get a built-in Knuckle-style grip without buying extra accessories. Pricing a 256GB base at $349-$399 and 512GB at $449-$499 lets Meta profit on hardware while completely locking down the mid-range market against Pico or HTC, making a lighter, quieter, pin-sharp headset that people actually use daily instead of letting it gather dust. Is a fanless pancake Q4-powered Quest 4S at $350 the dream setup or am I coping?(Bonus Add a tracking loop similar to valve index)

Do you truly believe that Meta's engineers are sitting around waiting for a random armchair hardware architect in an Off‑Topic thread to tell them how to design a next‑gen headset? 🤪.

"The Quest 4S Mastermind"

Scene: A very serious Meta hardware design meeting. Whiteboards covered in optics diagrams, thermal maps, and SoC block charts. Engineers sit around a table.

CHAIR ENGINEER: Right, team, we've spent three years on this headset. Optics, thermals, ergonomics, silicon, supply chain, the lot. Any final inputs before we lock the design?

INTERN: Sir, we haven't checked the Off‑Topic thread yet.

[Everyone GASPS.]

CHAIR ENGINEER: Good lord, you're right. How could we forget the most critical stakeholder… the Guy In The Forum.

[He clicks. On screen appears a post titled: "Ideas for Meta Quest 4S".]

CHAIR ENGINEER: Right, team, today we review community feedback. Let's see what the Off‑Topic sages have bestowed upon us.

INTERN: Sir, this one says the Quest 4S should be a "re‑badged Quest 3 with Quest 4 guts and zero fan" to dominate at $350.

ENGINEER #1: Ah yes, the ancient prophecy: "Thou shalt remove the fan, for most people play in air‑conditioned rooms anyway."

ENGINEER #2: Brilliant! Why bother with thermals when we have… air‑conditioning. Truly, a visionary.

CHAIR ENGINEER: What else does our oracle decree?

INTERN: "Just recycle the Quest 3 chassis and pancake lenses 100%."

ENGINEER #3: Of course! Why innovate when we can rummage through the storage closet?

ENGINEER #1: And the optics are "already crisp" and "yield rates are high."

ENGINEER #2: Excellent. We'll simply tell the factory: "Make it cheap, but also perfect."

CHAIR ENGINEER: Any guidance on storage?

INTERN: Yes, sir. "128GB is unplayable." We must start at 256GB minimum.

ENGINEER #1: Unplayable! Quick, alert the press. The 128GB units must be recalled immediately.

ENGINEER #3: Should we mention compression or RAM capacity?

CHAIR ENGINEER: No, no - the oracle has spoken.

INTERN: There's also a controller revelation: "Elongate the tracking ring slightly so users can loop the wrist straps through for a built‑in Knuckle‑style grip."

ENGINEER #2: A bold move. Truly, the future of VR lies in… longer rings.

ENGINEER #3: And wrist straps. Don't forget the wrist straps.

ENGINEER #1: Hold on... tracking rings were made redundant with the Quest 3 and 3s!

CHAIR ENGINEER: Pricing?

INTERN: "$349–$399 for 256GB, $449–$499 for 512GB."

ENGINEER #1: So we're to build a lighter, quieter, fanless, next‑gen headset… for the price of a mid‑range blender.

ENGINEER #2: And profit handsomely.

ENGINEER #3: Naturally.

[Suddenly, the FORUM BLOKE bursts in, holding a printout of their post.]

FORUM BLOKE: 'Ello! I've solved your entire product strategy. Just follow my plan exactly and you'll "lock down the mid‑range market."

CHAIR ENGINEER: Splendid! Tell us, how did you arrive at these insights?

FORUM BLOKE: Well, I played Asgard's Wrath once, and my headset got warm, so I thought: "Remove the fan."

ENGINEER #1: Genius.

FORUM BLOKE: And I needed more storage, so I said: "Give everyone more storage."

ENGINEER #2: Revolutionary.

FORUM BLOKE: And I like the Quest 3 shell, so I said: "Use the Quest 3 shell."

ENGINEER #3: A masterclass in design thinking.

CHAIR ENGINEER: Anything else?

FORUM BLOKE: Yes - add a tracking loop like the Valve Index.

ENGINEER #1: A bonus feature! The oracle is generous today.

CHAIR ENGINEER (stands, solemn): Ladies and gentlemen, we must accept the truth. Our years of expertise are nothing compared to one Off‑Topic post written between snack breaks. From this day forth, all Meta hardware decisions shall be made by: [He reads dramatically from the screen.] "Ideas for Meta Quest 4S – Off‑Topic"

FORUM BLOKE: Brilliant. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got another thread to write: "HOW TO FIX ALL OF VR IN 5 MINUTES (META READ THIS)".

[He exits, tripping over a cable, then posting about "bad cable management" on the way out.]

ENGINEER #1: So… what do we actually do?

CHAIR ENGINEER: Same as always. We quietly build the real headset while Off‑Topic designs the impossible one.

INTERN: Should we reply to his post?

CHAIR ENGINEER: Just write: "Thanks for the feedback!" It's the corporate equivalent of a medieval blessing.

[Fade out as the projector scrolls past increasingly wild forum "specs" and the engineers go back to their actual work.]
