So about a month ago I had an accident involving a jar of tiger balm and my 47" Toshiba 3dtv, that left my TV a $1300 paperweight. Considering the heavy costs of repairing large panel LED's and the fact that I really don't want (can't afford) to spend another K on something this soon after buying the Oculus and a new PC to go with it, I decided to opt for one of the 1440p Korean PLS panel monitors in the $300 range that I have been seeing all over ebay lately. I spent about a week thinking about the decision, then after consulting my Wife and getting the go-ahead, I decided to take the plunge. Considering how many reports there have been of people getting heavy amounts of dead pixels and bad BLB I did a lot of homework on which panel had the best ratio of risk to reward, and eventually settled on a seller that I figured had a pretty solid reputation. The total cost of the monitor was just over $300 dollars and with free shipping I was very surprised to see that it arrived today, 2 d
At a push of a button, Samsung can make their LCD transparent. This was shown at I believe CES over a year ago. Now only if the size and latency was perfect. Imagine finding your keyboard or mouse without having to lift up the Oculus to avoid knocking over your drink. Almost happened to me blindly searching for my keyboard :( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsEUMrW5rVoNotebooks with transparent screens (not sure if you can turn off the transparency during a game):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwCi-WqMIFAAnother feature that would be nice would be touch. If a touch sensor was added to the front of the Oculus, you could zoom into objects, select items, pause/play a movie, etc. just by touching the front of the Oculus (where most people paste eyes on). This would help by not needing a mouse or keyboard for some specific applications like movie players or art programs.
I opened my news-feed this morning and read yet another article that claimed Hawken has been "playable" on the RIFT since day-1. Frustrating as this was something that's been hyped about through the press for months and doesn't show any signs of slowing. The more I think about it, the more I realize there's just no way its going to happen.. And this theory actually extends to most Triple A titles as well. Here's my take on what happened behind the scenes. .a) Hawken Developers initially see the Rift and are completely blown away. They do some basic tests with their title and see how in theory its an absolute perfect fit. As passionate game developers, how could they not want to get involved on some level and be part of history ?? b) They push forward with a limited single-player build, make press announcements, show limited demos at conferences, and garner an incredible amount of publicity for their title. We're at the win/win phase of the equation. They got me as a committed player, a
I figure everyone on this forum is interested in innovative technology. Well I stumbled upon this very cool concept the other day. It's a wearable device that continuously records audio, and with a single tap you can save the last 60 seconds to the device as well as to your smartphone.Think about it. At any time AFTER the fact, you can go back and save the last 60 seconds... A conversation you had, a promise someone made to you, a request that you don't have time to write down, a really funny joke or a memorable moment, a song you heard on the radio but couldn't Shazam in time, or maybe you came up with a great line for a song but it slipped from your mind right after you said it. Maybe you got into a car accident--just yell out the license plate of the guy who hit you before he drives away. Maybe your newborn baby just said his/her first words--no problem. All of these unanticipated events that you wish you could've captured, now they're just one tap away. There are so many more situat

How far off are we to create a city like NYC that would be indistinguishable from real life? The surface area of the NYC is 1,213sqkm which is about 1,213,000,000sqm. Well of course the world isn't flat so if we were to give volumetric shapes to everything we would need at least 10x the surface area. This means about 12,310,000,000sqm to be textured. A square meter texture to be indistinguishable from real life would need to be about 8192x8192 pixels which at 40bits of data per pixel would take up 320mb. This means that we need about 3.7 Exabytes to just store the textures! The polygonal data would probably be around the same so that would make it 7.4 Exabytes just for storage. Of course this is uncompressed data but it is still huge! Rendering power needed would also be counted in Exaflop numbers. So my guess is that we are anywhere around 15-20 years far to be able to do something like that.If we were to use voxels instead of current polygonal mapping, each cubic meter with 8192x819

OK but most people work at a desk on a computer. So once VR has a HD HMD and force feedback gloves you can step into your virtual office space from anywhere. Add in eye cameras and a mouth camera and your Avatar can mimic your expressions. Why should an office based company need a real office, as long as it's employees have a good connection everyone can step into their study and be at work, have meetings and even look great regardless. With high speed language translation a global corporation could have a single virtual office.Manual jobs could be done by robot systems, humanoid robotics has made great strides and so has motion capture rigs. OK for starters it might just be the dangerous high cost jobs, undersea, high-rise roles that start out this way but once the technology gets cheaper most manual jobs could go virtual. Advantages, a robotic system can be stronger than a man, and allow people to work faster with minimal burden on themselves. What about drivers, OK google are worki
Simple question but as we could be on the brink of creating a new space for humans to exist within, should that cyberspace be free and open like the web or paid for like a game or service?PS This topic is bound to be covered elsewhere so if you know of any videos, podcasts or links that discuss this issue please share?
I mean this with regards to your passion about VR and the Rift.I have been a gamer/geek my whole life and have many friends from many different backgrounds that are gamers or at least tech enthusiasts of some kind. The moment I became aware of the Rift I started to mention it to my friends and even new people I met thinking there would be some kind of universal response of "cool". Weirdly not a single person has seemed remotely interested. To be honest I'm quite confused. Some of these guys even work in the gaming industry. Well anyway this got me thinking about just how many people pledged enough for or ordered a Rift and realistically the number is a very tiny percentage of the population. Now clearly most people will be devs and it is only a prototype but I'm beginning to think VR is a lot less popular than I thought. In years to come will there be a small group of us fanboys running around in our own virtual world while the rest of the population sticks with Call of Duty 20 on thei
always nice to see a record :p
Just thinking we're making little islands of great VR games and experiences using a variety of technologies but is anyone working on the big VR Cyberspace experience.Basically we seem to need a way to connect the dots and move from VR space to VR space with ease, we need the equivalent of the VR Web, then the 3D engines Unity / Unreal ect, just become 3D VR web browsers, or become embedded in VR3D enabled web browsers. So is anyone working on the big picture, streamable, cacheable, content, server-side and client side-code, 3D navigation, 3DHTML.Imagine, if you logged into a VR browser and got a birds eye view of your point above the earth, and a set of links to places in the VR universe you like. Voice recognition for searches and interaction. The ability to goto any gamespace and join in.For instance take the VRJam 2013 over 100 entries, which you currently have to download and run to play, surely we don't want to have to do that in the future. You would want a 3D VRJam gallery space
One of my all time favourite games Space Hulk is out and it was developed in the Unity engine! It's a turn based squad based tactics game, based on the "two" player board game. Where you play the squad of ill fated space marines or the endless hordes of genestealers.http://store.steampowered.com/app/242570/It's out on steam, but it's £22.99 WTF can't believe the price, I think I'll wait till it hits the steam sales!
I found some video from my country and I think you should see it. It shows children living and walking and running on legs and hands like dog. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip6jXcj8v-8It is not fake.
Hi, watching this POV Video on youtube i wonder how this look withthe Stereoscopic Player and output set to Oculus Rift? Does it work at all?Its no 3D and no Headtracking but just the POV gives a nice feeling when watchingeven on a standard 2D Monitor :-)
I did a quick google search for automatic 3d modeling and I found thishttp://www.isprs.org/proceedings/xxxviii/part5/papers/137.pdfI'm sure it would be really expensive, and probably far off, but people keep talking about wireless Oculus Rifts and I keep thinking that would probably make you walk into the wall a lot, but what if programs could use real 3d data of the actual world around you, to the point where it would not only pick up the entire room, but it would pick up your arms, legs and everything too. We could play video games like they did in that episode of Futurama when they go on the internet.this paper might be a little clearer (has better pictures) :) http://www.ri.cmu.edu/pub_files/2013/5/xiong-aic-bim-v8.pdf
Noticed it in the last few weeks but curiosity is burning a hole in my brain now. Anyone know why?
Haven't seen an update in over two weeks, I figure the guys are very busy, so I just wanted to see if your order has shipped yet. If it has what was the number and was it to the US?Thanks!
I just added English captions to the video, it was very funny and totally unexpected.http://youtu.be/V86yojE2lNQ
East Coast here.My Rift left the UPS store in Anaheim, CA on Tuesday night, was lost in the ether, and hasn't reached any checkpoints since.Hopefully, hopefully everything is okay...
Hi guys, you manage to find a group of other indie game developers in your own country, you are invited to join and although you can't afford to attend their meetups at the moment your on their mailing list and private facebook page group. Where you can get feedback and advice from other developers just like you. All is good in FullIndie land. Then they regularly produce an article for their column on PockerGamer.biz and you're not really making great waves in the indie space so you put together a counter article about how to fail at being an indie and it get's published! Happy times in Full Indie Land! You're working on a VR game in the #VRJam and but there are more slots that need articles coming up in the next few months, you say what about one about VR, they say OK the guy next on the list can't get an article done could you do one for the next column slot, Yes!Two days later your are booted out of FullIndie UK!Here's the full story blow by blow - http://blog.arowx.com////blog1.php/b
Scientists grow tiny, pea sized human brains. While I can see this for the amazing breakthrough it is, I wonder what the ethical implications are.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-23863544
Second Life has been in decline for a while now, most of it is devoid of life with empty, eerily pristine and bizarre architecture. Do you think the advent of practical VR (via the Rift) has a change of revitalizing this ancient* space? Would you return to second life? Or would you rather something new appeared in its place?Interestingly, I imagine sometime in the future a team of VR archaeologists exploring SL for clues about the beginning of human digital life. That is, assuming we ever migrate our minds to a digital substrate.* by internet time.
I was just thinking  that someone needs to create an Oculus mod for Chivalry: Medieval war, I know that it isn't easy but it cant be too hard since the game runs on Unreal Engine 3. It was just a thought that i would like to see become a reality.
Who here has bought into the game already? I'm looking into it and am just curious to see how much of the Oculus community is there. I'm really bummed that I am only now looking into getting in on this game since it seems that I missed alot of cool early backer perks. Also, starting an Oculus specific plan would be really cool. So yeah, what do you all think of Star Citizen and Squad 42 so far?
