Missing the "Old" home environments?

After a long 10-hour workday, one of my favorite ways to reset and recharge was slipping into my Quest home environment. Cascadia was always my favorite — peaceful, open, a place where I could truly unwind and reset my compass. Ryokan Retreat with its koi pond, Desert Terrace with the hot air balloons at sunrise, and Winter Lodge with that cozy vacation warmth… each one gave me space to breathe. Now, with the older home environments gone, I really feel the loss. The new ones feel confined, with boundaries that keep you from exploring. They lean toward pushing social interaction, which is great sometimes, but not what I’m looking for every time I put on the headset. I love exploring other worlds, concerts in Horizons worlds, and 360 YouTube videos of places I’ll be visiting — but I also just want a spacious, relaxing home to return to. Something that feels like my place in VR. The old environments gave that sense of openness and serenity. The new ones feel smaller, more limited. Meta, I hope you’ll bring back some of the old favorites — they weren’t just backgrounds, they were sanctuaries. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this and maybe we will all find our home.

The Linux fix using ADB involves mount/run/pull/iso/apk/inject on command prompt for one permanent Virtual Environment (user0.filetype). I have all the GO os firmware version(s) on the headsets but my android phone might be too smart at the moment.

And will have to install Linux for Go reasons.

InvictusMaster  Maccyb123 @Fish_whisperer_01  I'm not sure if any of you guys had a Rift CV1 when they first came out, but those old Oculus homes and avatar editor still work in PCVR. There are several posts before and after the link as there are still no page numbers on the forum. Interactive transistor radio with jazz. Floating airships and day/night theme. Tutorial videos included.

Great post! Just like VR homes, real homes need the right balance of space and comfort. A home construction estimator can help plan costs and layouts to ensure that openness and serenity aren’t lost. In construction, thoughtful design creates environments where people truly feel at home.

Man I don't want custom enviroments to go away... I wish they did something like a "Classic Enviroments" or something like that. The new ones are good but, I still want the ability to customize my hub to anything.

While not quite the same as the environments, you could find a peaceful world that you enjoy in MH Worlds and open a new private instance to enjoy some quiet time to breath. I would be happy to make something for you, if you'd like? Just reach out and tell me the type of space that would be relaxing and enriching for you.

I was browsing through my Meta account on the web, and found a copy of the thumbnails for all my old custom home environments from the Rift S that I no longer have:

You made yourself a christmas tree😍

I always waited for a perfectly decorated christmas tree(it never happened) in my daily gifts from Oculus😂

It's almost that time of year we need a Christmas tree and we need our old home environments back.

I totally agree. I love the Desert Terrace home, and I miss it so much. I dont like being social and I really want my desert terrace home back. I hope Meta will consider adding it to the new platform. Please!

I was mining town guy Mountain-Girl  😂 But you don't need to be social when you choose one of the other environments. For example there is both a night time and day time mountain environment you might like very much. There are no people there. I'm like you, in life I'm very sociable, but in the headset, in the words of the great Greta Garbo......" I want to be alone" 😁

I went into the Horizon Central to try to be open minded, but there is nothing there for me. The detail and clarity of the visuals in the old environment is not present, and theres too many people. Im sad.

Not sure if everyone noticed but with this most recent update OS v81..the headset defaults to a passthrough view. OMG!! I cannot speak for everyone,  but when I log in I am leaving my real world to be in the Immersive home not the one I just left. It took a little effort, but I was able to change my default environment back to the Immersive home. Very frustrated and scratching my head why they configured it that way.  Does everyone like the passthrough over the immersive ?

I only use pass through to find my way to my swivel seat and not fall over anything. Right now using the Blumhouse creepy environment. Perfect for the season 😁👀👻👺👹💀

Similar here. I also only use pass through for finding things without putting off the headset.😁

Currently Blumhouse on Q3, Midnight on Q2

That's a pity. I know it's difficult to lose something you have become familiar and comfortable with.  Just FYI there are two very nice mountain scenes, one daytime, one night in the new environments. Very relaxing and peaceful. Maybe you can give them a try.

Adding to all of the above...

The "new immersive home" is incredibly boring, has almost zero customization and removes all the nice custom home environments we all had (most were far superior to their "new" single environment with just 4 pseudo-different backgrounds).

A massive downgrade and honestly makes me not want to go into the "Horizon Worlds" at all.
Before it was nice to go from a custom environment into a World or a game, now I'm basically just living in my apps and passthrough.

If I ever by mistake go into "Immersive Home" I feel my face immediately turn in disgust by just reflex and get out of that ASAP... such a shame  to destroy one of the few nice things that made each META headset "unique" for everyone.

A VERY STUPID and shortsighted change.

    Addendum:

I am still quite upset about the custom Home Environments being taken away...

The change seems so small and "insignificant"; but it is just a small (petty) gesture that speaks volumes on how META seems obsessed in preventing users from configuring and personalizing their own devices, taking away features constantly and/or replacing them with "their own" (forced) content, to the point that if feels like they own the device you paid for more than you do.

By taking away the Home Environments, META took away my last interest into the Horizon Worlds, and with that gone, perhaps it is time to look into what seems like a far better option, from a company that historically has not being against customization or modding, but in fact encouraged it.

Perhaps it is time to look into STEAM FRAME instead, I am pretty sure that, in time, I will be able to configure and customize that device vastly more than just changing basic pre-set settings on the Quest.

I can always come back to play some of the (lower resolution) standalone META exclusive titles in my Quest 3 (mostly for nostalgia).
But let's face it, having now an alternative like STEAM FRAME, it will make little sense to play PCVR via META anymore or moving forward... heck, we will be able to also play PCVR titles in standalone now, in an upgradeable device.

I am also sure the game-dev community will take this into consideration when creating VR games for the META store, by also providing the (higher quality) alternative to get most games via STEAM (which often has much better deals).

It is funny, how such an "insignificant" change like removing the ability to have a custom 3D environment has definitively pushed me 100% into setting money aside to get a STEAM FRAME and into eventually focus on enjoying my VR content almost exclusively there moving forward.

If this had not happen, I honestly think I would say "well I have my Quest, and I feel happy there, I don't really need a different dedicated HDM to play my content"... but now I DO.

You make a lot of good points mY_mic_is_not_working However one thing you mentioned about playing the lower resolution games on Quest, the resolution on the frame is barely a few pixels more and will look exactly the same to the human eye. One review I saw even said the Meta looks better. But all the other things can be a difference for many. Personally I'm a bit disappointed with the frame, particularly the resolution I mentioned. I'm not into PCVR anyway, prefer standalone, don't care about the environments, I just go straight to games. I'll probably hold off for a Quest 4 even if it's in 2027!  If the frame had a 4k OLED,  I'd consider it but it's really only 2k+ LCD, it's not worth spending possibly double the price of the Quest 3 for nothing significantly more. Just my opinion!
