Question

Next Gen Consoles targeting more than 10.7 Tflops?

Apparently Google Stadia has Sony and Microsoft concerned and rumors are flying that they will have their consoles exceed the 10.7 tflops of stadia's streaming service. That would be higher than a GTX 1080 at 9 teraflops.

According to the leak, Sony’s PS5 is aiming higher than Google Stadia’s 10.7 teraflop GPU. Not only the PS5, but Microsoft’s next Xbox codenamed Lockhart is also said to be gunning for the same target GPU.

The information comes from Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who is a trusted source on industry insider knowledge. Schreier further claimed that both next-gen consoles are set to launch next year.

If this turns out to be legit, PSVR 2 could be a real contender and I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft decides to jump in as well.

@snowdog- Sony hasn't messed up with their current VR headset and I don't expect them to mess up with PS VR2. In-fact, I think it's Sony and not Oculus that will bring more people to VR, as it has shown with it's first VR offering by selling 4 million plus headsets.

All of this will help Oculus and other VR companies make a successes of VR, so everyone wins in the end.

I didn't say that Sony had messed up with the headset itself, just with the tracking and motion controls.

I just don't have a great deal of faith that both Sony and Microsoft won't fuck something up along the way.

Looks like Sony is going to own.

It’s foolish to say that right now. Wait until the new Xbox is actually out and see what happens.

"We already know that Sony's PlayStation 5 will feature an 8-core Ryzen processor with Navi graphics. That's going to give the console a big boost in performance over the PS4 (along with other key upgrades, like SSD storage), but by the time it comes out, we could very well see 12-core and 16-core processors pushed down into the mainstream.

Nevertheless, JPR is convinced that PC gamers are on the cusp of an exodus of sorts. In addition to consoles like the ones offered by Sony and Microsoft, JPR sees cloud gaming devices (eg, Google's Stadia) pulling PC gamers into the fold."

I'm an xbox guy, but if the PSVR2 is as good as the supposed specs we've seen, I might have to pick up a PS5 as well.

@RuneSR2 - I know if Nvida continue with their ridiculous pricing then a lot of people including myself will eventually just buy a console. I'm hoping the Sony VR 2 headset will be good because I will be the first to jump ship if it is. I'll then just use a PC for 2D games that don't require a high end card and play them on a 1080p monitor.

I always found it difficult affording a Graphics card that cost £700, so I find it impossible to spend £1000 plus on one now. PlayStation 5 looks like it is going to be awesome. The Console will probably be under £600 and even include Ray tracing by the looks of things. Just show Nvida are taking the pee if a console can include ray tracing and come in at under £600.

Edit: There is just one thing that I don't like about Consoles and that is they don't include proper support for a keyboard & Mouse. If they did I would have probably jumped ship a long time ago. I just wish Sony would make a keyboard & Mouse or allow something to support these devices properly.

To play fair here - the RT they are discussing WONT be as powerful as the RTX lines. It will be use for reflections and other small effects. RTX hardware base is still teh way to go for the biggest jump. Remember, RT it self is just software - RTX is just the added hardware to make it work better. NV finally is letting all their cards access to it - and people are finally understanding the big difference in why the hardware is needed for it. Granted - some nice tricks can still happen even now with current AMD and NV 10s cards.

@Mradr - Some people like myself don't give a rats arse about RTX though and just wanted Nvidia to have a cheaper card in order to play VR games and 4K games with better performance.

Yea sadly that report pretty much mirrors what my thoughts have been for awhile. All of the innovation that PC used to be known for has been reduced a slow crawl and the consoles improvements are more rapid and at a better price point (at least up front) because of the subsidizing. That all said, not sure I believe it will happen to that extent yet, especially if VR takes off.

That all said, I'm more of an enthusiast gamer and can't see myself leaving the PC platform in the next decade unless I'm just forced to.

That's funny, I mainly PC game and only use controllers. K&M doesn't let me kick back with my feet up. I have no plans to upgrade my PC until real gen2 VR is out (with the new tech currently under construction) so a next gen console might end up my go to gaming platform for years to come. As long as I've gamed on PC it's really only been for two things. Steam deals and performance. Console deals are often as good now, sometimes better, especially with gamepass - can't get that on Steam, and if the new consoles do better than an i5-6600 and a 1070 in performance, then that lead goes to console too obviously.
