Well, good luck finding a huge open-world action-RPG like Zelda on your phone.

Also it should be noted that New 3DS & XL were sold out nearly everywhere over the xmas period. Possibly fueled further by the fact that it's been cracked wide open. Regardless, I'll still be playing mine for years to come because it's got a massive library of great games.

Phones are great for listening to podcasts, streaming from my Plex server, remoting into my server to find out why Plex isn't working, checking mail and on the odd ocassion actually making a phone call. Shame 99.9% of the games are complete shovelware.

This switch does look pretty cool. And for what it's worth you can't really say consoles only do 1 thing well, as most also browse the internet and have built in communication of their own with others on the console.

Dude.  When is the last time you saw someone browsing the internet on their 3DS? PS Vita?  If you do see this in the wild, please snap a pic of this near-extinct species with your phone.  Then let him borrow it because they obviously don't have one, it's getting dark soon, and he probably needs to tell mommy where he is!  ;)

True, but prior to 2007 who'd have imagined we'd play anything on a phone?  :)

Just have to look at the Raspberry Pi to see what can be done with cheap SOC setups.

Anyway, can't see Nintendo doing away with the 3DS anytime soon. However, food for thought ... during it's life time the 3DS had an update [CPU, memory etc in 2014], perhaps we could see the same thing happening with the Switch, going from the Tegra X1 to X2 chip at some point down the line.

Aside from that it's been cracked completely with no chance of that route being patched out. You can take it from the current firmware to full custom & freeshop using just a pc with a SD card reader.

I have actually seen it, but the reason it's rare is that people when using the devices, are normally playing the games you can't get on the phones. Sure they don't take it out in place of a phone purely for the internet, as it's more convenient on the phone. It doesn't make them children. It simply means in today's instant gratification society, we will always go for what's more convenient. It's worth being noted that I don't even have a phone, I use my tablet on wifi in place of it with a free app you can get free minutes with. I just share wifes phone if we go out and need one.

"Phone games are killing other portable gaming!" is a claim I've heard before, and I just can't bring myself to consider it seriously.  That's like saying that all those random puzzle games and casino sims and farmville on Facebook are going to be the end of Steam.

You just can't compare things like Angry Birds or Flappy Birds, a million clones of Bejewelled, or even Sonic Run and Pokemon Go to most of what is on the 3DS or whatever the current Sony portable is.   One of those platforms contains short, shallow or repetitive time-wasters.. like, literally designed just to distract you while you wait through a bus ride or something, and are mainly played by grandmas and teens who never got into serious gaming.  The other contains REAL GAMES that offer the depth and satisfaction of anything on a home console or PC.   Hell, most mobile games would barely qualify as a minigame you'd find inside of a 3DS game.
It's hard being the voice of reason when you're surrounded by unreasonable people.

One of the things that really is exciting is the idea of bringing the system with me (to work or whatever) and playing a 2 player game split screen (been a while since I've done this). Nintendo pushed this hard on the announce video and I think that may be the killer feature, even though they are now claiming it's a home console system. Really it's the portable and multiplayer aspect that I think will be key to it's success.
