I read that the expandable storage is up to 2TB SDmicroHC/XC cards, though. Storage isn't going to kill this thing, it's going to be the quirky design.

Yes people will need to buy additonal storage space to play more than 2 games  :#

Also, the article states that 2TB microcards dont exist on the consumer market yet...??

~14GB isn't a massive install by today's standards, but only having 32GB [minus OS install] isn't good...  Will be getting the physical version of most games myself, but will probably get a 128GB micro SDxc card for some downloads also.

256GB cards are well over £100, 512GB cards are stupid money.

A powered external USB HDD might be an option [if they're supported] for those who just want digital downloads, but this is meant to be a portable system also. Not good having all your storage tethered to the dock.

Cancelled my Switch pre-order with Amazon UK. Why?

1. The items I'm after, Switch, Zelda:BOTW and carry case, are currently cheaper bought through Nintendo's shop.

2. You get a free tee-shirt with Zelda:BOTW buying from Nintendo's shop.

Correct, but supposedly they're trying to make the storage future-proof.  Too bad this thing may be defunct by the time that day arrives at a reasonable cost.  The press on this launch has been absolutely dismal, to include hands-on previews.  That's not going to help viral marketing.

I think it looks pretty cool. Also, remember the games come on small cartridges similar to PS Vita. You don't have to install or download the full game to the internal memory. You can probably buy a huge collection of games if you are only using the storage for save data. Only if you get digital games, that you need to download, then I can understand that it can only hold 1 or 2 large games (or a bunch of smaller games like SFII or whatever). The PS Vita only came with 1GB of internal memory, and the proprietary memory cards were expensive and only went to 64GB if I remember correct. So the Switch actually has an advantage if you compare it to current portable consoles.

Playstation Vita sales...

Let's hope the Switch actually outsells the Game Gear.  Otherwise, I think we can put a fork into portable consoles and admit mobile gaming is all about phones.  Nintendo knows this, which is why finally, after 10 years of refusing to accept the inevitable, they are moving to mobile phone gaming: Pokemon Go, Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem on iOS and Android.

Mobile gaming is far to be all about phone for lot of persons, and 3DS success show this. Under a certain age, a lot of parents don't want to have their children playing on a mobile phone, or with any kind of connection, me included. E.g. 3DS WIFI feature is even disabled for them. We have the console at home, we have the portable consoles in car, we have our phone to call and check news in restrooms, and Dad have his PC ;)

Good points, but the DS has been out in various iterations since 2004 and the 3DS successor launched in 2011.  Back in 2011, the iPhone 4S, Galaxy S II, Droid Bionic, HTC Titan, and Blackberry Torch were the dominant smartphones.  Mobile phone gaming as come a very long way in the past 5 years.  CPU speeds have greatly increased. 4G LTE and broadband speeds are much more available.  Major game developers have moved to mobile phone gaming to publish truly great titles so now the software is there.  The installed base crushes mobile consoles.  The next generation of gamers is being reared to game on phones.  They are always with you and you don't have to lug around another piece of hardware that can only do one thing well....

I'm not saying portable consoles are dead, but they are dying.

I may be wrong here, but I was under the impression that a big majority of "mobile phone gamers" mainly only play bs IAP games and/or things I don't think should really classify as a real "game" such as candy crush/bubble witch saga/angry birds/etc. It's like the flash game craze in the past; it got hugely popular, tons of people were playing them, but they could hardly compete with experiences that even the good ol' ps2 gave.

That being said, phones are getting better and better. In fact you can now emulate ps1/psp/ds and many more consoles, with better resolution/frames than the originals gave. Also the app stores do now have some fairly decent games. (if you have the patience to find them through all the over-rated muck out there)

While portable consoles are definitely diminished in comparison, I doubt they'll ever fully vanish. This switch does look pretty cool. And for what it's worth you can't really say consoles only do 1 thing well, as most also browse the internet and have built in communication of their own with others on the console.
