Question

One way time travel opportunity. Would you go?

What if some weirdo appeared on your lawn and offered you a one way time travel journey.

You can time travel once. Only once to the past or the future, the choice is yours. But take your time to think about it, as there will be no going back. It's a one way ticket to another time.

Where would you go? Would you even go at all?

i would go approximately 5 years into the past, and exploit my knowledge of the future for financial gain. i would also build an oculus styled hmd company and self fund it with my illgotten monies. id call it the snarfbotulus rift, it would be a mega hit, with a large internet following. once it was an established well regarded shipping product i would update the firmware with a mind control hypnosis sorta thing, so when you put it on you became my puppet.

with my new army of slaves i would begin the process of conquering the planet. the ones in journalism, game development and general media related employ i would be able to use as is, effectively extending my influence outside of immediate users/owners.

politicians in my control would be passing laws requiring the use of the snarfbotulus rift in government, schools, dmvs etc. after my army reached critical mass i would activate their combat mode, where they would fight any non snarfbotulated human in sight.

they would be programmed to scream and point when they identified one like the invasion of the body snatchers. everyone would be like, wait a minute ive seen this before.. then they would be restrained while a rift was thrust over their head.

the war would be over in a matter of hours, at which point i would direct them to begin building monuments in my honor, great pyramids and stuff, with feasts of hotdogs and hamburgers, sauerkraut and beer. people would dance until they passed out, damn it because its my party.

anyway it would be pretty sweet.

I'd wait for a mega millions lottery to have no winners, then travel back one day with the winning number so I could win it all to myself.

:D when I think of time travel this pic always comes to mind...

When I was younger I thought it would be cool, but now I just want to see where this time line goes, so a one way trip... I just couldn't do it.

Either back to make gains on the market or ahead to the see the singularity take off. Not sure May 12th 2054 is the exact date but if it's true the world "should" change more than ever ever knew possible.

Perhaps we the deposit of life from a planet that has already gone through the singularity. Otherwise there would be to much evidence of advanced civilization laying about when would dig up and discover.

    Future: +200 years

If High Frequency Trading in Wall Street using automous programs doesn't trip, fall and lead to people stacking mobile homes on top of one another... the average quality of life of everyone in a current 1st world country should be much, much higher, they will find out McDonalds gives you brain cancer, everyone is going to be mocha-colored from mixing and will make fun of my weird un-pre-configured-as-a-fetus face and I can upload memories of 21st Century to the WWW and BrainTube while gaining popularity as being strangely ugly compared to the future trend-faces of Keanu Reeves and Sofia Vergara... but adoringly naive, like a baby grandma who didn't know how to navigate an ipad. (And this will draw me a huge audience like those who are unable to stop watching Here Comes Honey Boo Boo! Which will allow me to set trends...) I'll be the popular caveman with amazing toys and one spoken language, haha...

Considering that the technology the last two decades have evolved way faster than anyone realisticly could imagine, i believe something similar to the full-dive VR technology (sword art online, ya know) will be aviable to the market within 50 years. 20 If we're really lucky.

Would however buy google stocks and maybe some gold before i went. Feels like a fairly good investement

I was thinking roughly the same thing. The future of Virtual Reality as a tool for entertainment will be effected greatly by how well the Oculus Rift does. If they can market it well and get people to buy it, more people will see VR for what it is now and what it can become. Next thing you know, we will see a boom of investors wanting to throw their money at developers feet in hopes that they can further VR and create the next 'latest and greatest' thing that will wow the masses and be even more immersive than the previous generation. If that happens, then we will see a even more rapid climb towards completely immersive VR technology.

That said, I would wait to use my chance to travel into the future for a little while and watch to see how the Oculus does. If it does really well and we see Virtual Reality take a path towards advancement, then I would choose to go 20 years into the future, I estimate by around that time we will have everything one could ever want out of Virtual Reality as far as entertainment purposes go. And if not, I am sure we would either be very close or at a point in time where we can accurately estimate how far out we actually would be from that point to where we have total immerse.

Now. If the Oculus DOESN'T do good (Yeah, like it we actually think it won't) then I would have no other choice but to take a completely uneducated guess and throw myself 50 years into the future and hope that Full Immersion Virtual Reality came about naturally as time and technology progressed. If I arrive at that point and it is STILL not created…. Well, I guess I will just have to give in and allow myself to be assimilated. I for one will accept my new insect overlords.
