Question

Steam Hardware Survey - July 2025 results included (see latest post in this thread)

Latest results:

These results are compared, at least for the Rift, to August when Rift peaked at 0.35 %. Since August 2018 Rift has decreased about 6 % (from 0.35 to 0.33). Vive also decreased.

Compared to other HMDs we see from April to September (note that this image hasn't been updated to October yet):

When updated to October I'd expect:

Rift = 45 %
Vive = 42 %
WMR = 8 %
Vive Pro = 3 %
Rift DK2 = 1 %

BTW - some history:

April 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.20%
HTC Vive 0.18%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%
Unknown 0.00%

July 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.32%
HTC Vive 0.31%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.05%
HTC Vive Pro 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%

I guess it's more or less a stand still since July for Rift and the original Vive... I don't think the Odyssey+ has had any impact on the WMR results above, the Odyssey+ is much too new - if it'll have any impact, it won't be before the Steam Hardware Survey November 2018 results.

I have to wonder if they're lumping Oculus Quest users who use Link (or a Virtual Desktop program) under Rift users?

If you check the latest results from 2020, Quest is fully registered on its own in SteamVR, but you may be right for results from 2019.

@RuneSR2 yeah I think the ordering was ok but posters were saying up to a month for orders to change from 'opened' to 'processed for shipping', I think that was the extreme though.

The fact that Quest is such a low percentage, yet we can see it selling well on all other charts/stats, might be an indicator that not many people are using their Quest for PCVR.

My thoughts too. I'm thinking that Quest attracts users who don't have rigs capable of PCVR.

Could also explain that many Quest ports get few ratings for the Rift versions, if the majority of Quest users just have one hmd and aren't able to use cross-buy.

Interesting to see if Quest increases a lot more on Steam the next year - which could be due to more Quests being sold, and/or existing Quest users advancing into PCVR...

There was a strong interest to use Quest with Link initially, and even after the confusion with the Link cable of choice the issue still seems to be that Quest is best as...Standalone. Its not really there for the PC community, and there are comments on all the forums about some Sim Sickness using its as a PC Link platform, compared to its standalone attributes. There is also some feeling with some users that Rift-S is best for this and not to compromise or pretend that there is a strong Hybrid option. A better Snapdragon processor will address many of these concerns, but that version has yet to materialize. I still have concerns over the accuracy of the chart.

Latest results - maybe we're worrying about PCVR being Questified, like being assimilated by super-low-IQ Borgs :# , but it seems PCVR has never been stronger. Nearly 2 % of all Steam users have a PCVR compatible HMD attached to their rigs:

JULY 2020

Index now rules over the Rift CV1, who'd have thought that would happen... Index and the Quest have the biggest increases - maybe more Quest owners are coming to PCVR?

WMR needs the G2, current trends aren't good. The old kings of Gen1 are dying - Vive and CV1 lost the most.

Also there's this:

- Especially indicating growth for Index and Quest. Kinda sad to see what's happened to CV1 during the last year.

Which was brought on by Oculus themselves. They lost a fair amount of sim enthusiasts.

.....

I dont think we have the information available to make this evaluation - the SteamVR stats are just all over the place, and Valve know that.

It is obvious that certain games were "dumbed down" graphically for Quest deployment, its just is this the norm from now on?

Kinda sad to see what's happened to CV1 during the last year.

CV1 suffered from a lot of wear and tear, mine sure did (summer 2019 peeled off everything that was only glued together), and it's not like you can just replace it with a new CV1.

But between the underwhelming CV-S, the expensive Valve Index, and the 2080 TI HP Reverb G2, I have yet to find a replacement for my CV1.

I think the CV1 just was left to defend a difficult position for too long, it became embracing hearing time after time the loyal claiming a CV2 was just round the corner.

While HTC understood that a cost reduction was needed and made the VIVE Pro - Oculus just seemed to focus in another direction, and then abandon that for Quest and handing off to Lenovo.

That missed opportunity of the CV1.2 gave away any margin to be a PC-VR player. The same way that HTC threw away their position with HTC Cosmos. When the execs have their postmortem over this phase of VR, a lot of embarrassment will need to be covered up.
