Question

Steam Hardware Survey - July 2025 results included (see latest post in this thread)

Latest results:

These results are compared, at least for the Rift, to August when Rift peaked at 0.35 %. Since August 2018 Rift has decreased about 6 % (from 0.35 to 0.33). Vive also decreased.

Compared to other HMDs we see from April to September (note that this image hasn't been updated to October yet):

When updated to October I'd expect:

Rift = 45 %
Vive = 42 %
WMR = 8 %
Vive Pro = 3 %
Rift DK2 = 1 %

BTW - some history:

April 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.20%
HTC Vive 0.18%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%
Unknown 0.00%

July 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.32%
HTC Vive 0.31%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.05%
HTC Vive Pro 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%

I guess it's more or less a stand still since July for Rift and the original Vive... I don't think the Odyssey+ has had any impact on the WMR results above, the Odyssey+ is much too new - if it'll have any impact, it won't be before the Steam Hardware Survey November 2018 results.

Kinda sad to see what's happened to CV1 during the last year.

CV1 suffered from a lot of wear and tear, mine sure did (summer 2019 peeled off everything that was only glued together), and it's not like you can just replace it with a new CV1.b G2,

While HTC understood that a cost reduction was needed and made the VIVE Pro - Oculus just seemed to focus in another direction, and then abandon that for Quest and handing off to Lenovo.

Well, the CV1 was reduced ahead of the Vive each time and it was down to $350 with Vive still at $600 for awhile. Plus the Vive Pro came out at $1400 which eliminated it from the average VR users consideration. I wish Oculus would have followed up with something more along the lines of a CV2 like they originally planned but I can understand the course change when the sales of CV1 were below expectations.

Personally, I think HTC made a lot of horrible decisions regarding the Vive and Cosmos. I get they may not have had much choice with the Vive due to Valve controlling the base stations but there was a missed opportunity to seize control of the market by either lowering the cost of the Vive Pro or coming out with a cheaper alternative when Oculus was non committal on a successor. Instead they tried to get away from Valve's tracking and dropped the ball completely.

Precisely. It would have been foolish for Oculus to continue targeting high-end hardware considering the VR Software Ecosystem. HTC failed in this arena in a major way. They didn't launch their VivePort subscription store until after they went through financial ruin and got saved by Google.

Oculus hasn't abandoned PCVR, at least not yet. All the PCVR exclusives we've gotten up to this year is blatant proof, and we still have more yet to be released. I think it's easier for people to just look at the hardware side (e.g. Rift-S with Lenovo) in order to paint a specific picture about Oculus. But when we look at the reality of the situation, Oculus role with PCVR - which includes Exclusives and Quest Link - is still going strong.

Software is King. HTC failed to realize this when they were poopin out HMD's left n right. Valve is getting it done proper, with Alyx rolling out alongside their Index CV1. Oculus is going strong by dishing out more and more PCVR exclusives each year, including 2020.

Totally agree.
While some kept harping on that HTC was "going to go under any time soon" - they kept on slogging, and making the same old mistakes, but as you said in many cases their hands were tied because of the license with Valve and price point that the base-station (Lighthouse) system forced them down.

Looking at the mess with HTC Cosmos and its hard to see how that exec team was allowed to mess up so complete - but if you have dealt with the Taiwan management team you understand that the company is a fractured mess of private fiefdoms.. It is amazing to consider that over 40% of VIVE sales have been in the commercial sector where Oculus has not achieved even 5%.

Now HTC places all its investment into supporting Cosmos Elite and VIVEPORT ecosystem - though they still have one more trick up their sleeve for Q1.

Out of curiosity, how many people reading this thread have actually gotten the survey invite recently? If you haven't had the popup for it, your headset isn't counted in the survey.

I had it just the other day. My CV1 was active at the time, so it got counted rather than my Quest, although I’ve been using both recently.

Not sure I've had it on the rig since 2019.

I've got Steam on my Office PC, and a few months ago I got registered with my Q6600, GTX 680, 8GB and no VR at all - guess that's my life in a nutshell  :/   :D

JULY 2020

Some dude posted on Index Reddit that Index is now the 3rd most popular HMD on Steam, which of course is shown in the chart.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/i4vgci/valve_index_is_now_3rd_most_owned_vr_headset_on/

This does show that many are willing to pay 1k for a HMD - and interesting if Index can move one more step up the chart if the original Vive starts to sink...
