Question

Steam Hardware Survey - July 2025 results included (see latest post in this thread)

Latest results:

These results are compared, at least for the Rift, to August when Rift peaked at 0.35 %. Since August 2018 Rift has decreased about 6 % (from 0.35 to 0.33). Vive also decreased.

Compared to other HMDs we see from April to September (note that this image hasn't been updated to October yet):

When updated to October I'd expect:

Rift = 45 %
Vive = 42 %
WMR = 8 %
Vive Pro = 3 %
Rift DK2 = 1 %

Source: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

BTW - some history:

April 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.20%
HTC Vive 0.18%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%
Unknown 0.00%

July 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.32%
HTC Vive 0.31%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.05%
HTC Vive Pro 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%

I guess it's more or less a stand still since July for Rift and the original Vive... I don't think the Odyssey+ has had any impact on the WMR results above, the Odyssey+ is much too new - if it'll have any impact, it won't be before the Steam Hardware Survey November 2018 results.

I hope you're right mate.  Right now it sounds like Q3 is going to be  even cheaper ($199) with hand tracking (no controllers).  Mainly aimed at social VR.

I’m not sure where that rumour came from... As far as I know, all this talk of Quest 3 was based on Zuckerberg’s statement in the FB January earnings call, where he said:

We’re continuing to work on new hardware as well. The new hardware will fit the same platform, so the content that works on Quest 2 should be forward-compatible, so that we’re going to build one larger install base around the virtual reality headsets that we have.

Forward compatibility would imply that controllers aren’t going anywhere.

Maybe for Quest 3 we'll get some options, with a low-grade unit and a high-grade unit that offers better lenses, and internal hardware (processor, etc).

The skies the limit at this point!  <3

I hope you're right mate.  Right now it sounds like Q3 is going to be  even cheaper ($199) with hand tracking (no controllers).  Mainly aimed at social VR.  Seems Oculus Facebook will do anything to help get VR mainstream, lol!  Any possibility of a cv2 seems pretty remote now, sob-sob.

As long as you still can use the Q3 to experience PCVR, the saddest day comes when a new Quest hmd no longer supports any PCVR  :# ;) In fact, I'm no longer confident that such a day will never come, but I truly hope it doesn't. Guess a new Quest hmd with no PCVR support could be called the Go Pro/Deluxe, lol.

Was really close to buying a Vive Pro last night (I have both controllers and base stations, only need the hmd) - but then I regained a moment of clarity and didn't - 2 active hmds must be enough for now.

HTC seems to be supporting many interesting apps for art - but not all are available using Viveport. Still haven't found enough reasons to install Viveport, need some exclusive software to convince me.

A new and fun CV1 vs Q2 discussion, some Q2 owners do not consider it an upgrade and regret selling the CV1  B)

Well, the solution is never to sell anything - keep it all - just like me  o:)

I'm not much into Q2 - this did catch my eye though - regarding Q2 image quality

Comment: "fun fact: its not really super sampling its just to handle the distortion with the lenses. that 1.7x is NOT supersampling."

I think the major advantage future Quests have over an Apple VR headset would be PCVR, and the advantage it has over other PCVR headsets is it's stand-alone.

For Apple to compete they're going to need PCVR capabilities and I don't see them doing that. Other manufactures similarly are going to find it tough unless their headsets are also hybrid. I think Valve are the only company that could do it if they set up a similar ecosystem.

Either way I don't see any reason Facebook would cede territory willingly. Definitely not by abandoning half of the reason people by the headsets.

Edit: Having said that, AR is the joker in the pack and will become bigger than VR imo. Is Apple's device touted as being AR or VR?

Content is king - any new hmd that does not support SteamVR (or is supported by Oculus) may have to struggle greatly for survival...

Regarding Quest 2 resolution and GPU encode resolution: the max resolution you can set in the Oculus PC app for the Quest 2 is 5408 x 2736 (You can push it higher with the ODT pixel override as you would with a Rift). This resolution gets you 1:1 pixel resolution in the middle of the screen (after barrel distortion). That's why it is said that x1.7 is not supersampling; just like all headsets, a render target which is larger than the native display resolution is necessary for 1:1 pixels after distortion (typically 1.4 times larger on each axis).

Encode resolution is the size of the image that is sent to the headset. For Q2 it defaults to
3664 x 1920, which is the native resolution of the Q2's display. This doesn't mean that supersampling, or rendering at a resolution higher than the encode res is useless--just like with any screen, a larger image is downsampled to the display resolution. In the case of Link, the image distortion happens before encoding; instead of encoding the full-sized raw rendered image, the image is pre-distorted and the peripheral part of the image is shrunk down so that the final image size matches the display, reducing the workload for the GPU encoder and the data bandwidth needed. This is not really any different than a Rift or any other headset--no matter how high the render resolution, the final image that gets displayed is distorted and downsampled to the display's native resolution.
