Question

Steam Hardware Survey - July 2025 results included (see latest post in this thread)

Latest results:

These results are compared, at least for the Rift, to August when Rift peaked at 0.35 %. Since August 2018 Rift has decreased about 6 % (from 0.35 to 0.33). Vive also decreased.

Compared to other HMDs we see from April to September (note that this image hasn't been updated to October yet):

When updated to October I'd expect:

Rift = 45 %
Vive = 42 %
WMR = 8 %
Vive Pro = 3 %
Rift DK2 = 1 %

Source: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

BTW - some history:

April 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.20%
HTC Vive 0.18%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%
Unknown 0.00%

July 2018:

Oculus Rift 0.32%
HTC Vive 0.31%
Windows Mixed Reality 0.05%
HTC Vive Pro 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK2 0.01%
Oculus Rift DK1 0.00%

I guess it's more or less a stand still since July for Rift and the original Vive... I don't think the Odyssey+ has had any impact on the WMR results above, the Odyssey+ is much too new - if it'll have any impact, it won't be before the Steam Hardware Survey November 2018 results.

Maybe for Quest 3 we'll get some options, with a low-grade unit and a high-grade unit that offers better lenses, and internal hardware (processor, etc).

The skies the limit at this point!  <3

I hope you're right mate.  Right now it sounds like Q3 is going to be  even cheaper ($199) with hand tracking (no controllers).  Mainly aimed at social VR.  Seems Oculus Facebook will do anything to help get VR mainstream, lol!  Any possibility of a cv2 seems pretty remote now, sob-sob.

As long as you still can use the Q3 to experience PCVR, the saddest day comes when a new Quest hmd no longer supports any PCVR  :# ;) In fact, I'm no longer confident that such a day will never come, but I truly hope it doesn't. Guess a new Quest hmd with no PCVR support could be called the Go Pro/Deluxe, lol.

Was really close to buying a Vive Pro last night (I have both controllers and base stations, only need the hmd) - but then I regained a moment of clarity and didn't - 2 active hmds must be enough for now.

HTC seems to be supporting many interesting apps for art - but not all are available using Viveport. Still haven't found enough reasons to install Viveport, need some exclusive software to convince me.

Ya, more than 2x dedicated PCVR headsets is totally unnecessary imho.  As we have both found out, it is often handy to have a dual PCVR headset setup esp. in your case with a lcd Index and oled cv1.  I feel the same way with my Vive Pro/Rift cv1 dual setup (I don't count my Quest 1 as a dedicated PCVR headset btw).  So, you buying a Vive Pro or me buying a Valve Index probably does not make a lot of sense right now.  For me, the same thing with the HP G2.  While it may have slightly better clarity for sims, there is no way it has the potential to be a primary all-rounder dedicated PCVR headset imho.

Honestly, I would really prefer to only have 1x dedicated PCVR headset but this is currently not possible thanks to Oculus's closed-store policy and exclusive releases.  Maybe that will change one day, who knows.  If this were the case I think my Vive Pro (w/Etsy Gear VR lens mod and Index controllers) would be all that's necessary for good PCVR.

As far as VivePort goes, I really enjoy my Infinity subscription and they seem to be getting newer releases and faster updates a lot better now.  Whether or not it's worth it for you probably depends on what SteamVR apps you already have.  You need to do a bit of searching on their website for apps included with Infinity (and that support your Index as well) and see if this makes sense or not.  You normally have a 1-2 month free window to try it out to see if you like it or not.

I have Rift S still installed and ready to go, along with Reverb G2.
I am finding the G2 to be a better all around PC-VR headset than I initially thought it would be.
Not only for flight and racing sims which I expected, but for VR games using the WMR controllers as well.

Did a complete playthrough of Half Life Alyx and Medal of Honor Above and Beyond with it with no real problem.
Yeah Oculus Touch tracking is a little better but the 4 camera tracking of the G2 was acceptable.
It is nice to have two solid headsets now available to me at anytime.

Rechargeable batteries though for the WMR controllers are a must, they sure burn through regular batteries in a hurry.
But yeah I consider myself sitting pretty for now with having both headsets available. CV1 is stowed away in it's original box. And Rift S not seeing much action of late, but ready to go in a moments notice if needed.
Oh and still have the original Quest although I rarely use it any more.

@dburne  Glad to hear your G2 is working out well for you mate and that you agree it's nice to have a dual headset setup.  Cheers.

Not to start it all again - but just saw this post about Ryte, which is a game I'm confident was made for oled hmds (officially the game only supports Rift and Vive):

Maybe it's not entirely correct, but to get the message through: Index and Rift-S can't go lower than about 0.15 nits in brightness, while oled like CV1 and Vive with spud can go all the way down to 0.02 nits (0.00 with no spud, but I don't mind the spud, it's there for a reason). So what happens when some low-light object is illuminated by let's say 0.10 nits? Then it vanishes into the gray nothingness-soup of the lcd fog - but you can still see it just fine using oled. I think that exactly explains the problem the dude has in Ryte. Note that lowering or increasing brightness won't help - when lowering lcd brightness overall, you'll also decrease brightness of in-game objects.
Again, this may be a rare problem, but I have a large collection of VR games and I've seen that problem more than a few times. Also means I more or less constantly have to use the flashlight in Saints & Sinners when using Index, but I get near-perfect night vision using CV1 - in that game the difference is massive. And with CV1 I have a hand free in that game (don't have to hold the flashlight).
Using lcd you may not be aware that everything may look quite a lot different using oled - often you need to change hmds and experience the exact same scene.

That's basically why I'm keeping the CV1 (ASW 2.0 performance is another, not sure ASW 2.0 is fully supported using Quest, hard to find that described anywhere).

Like Tom's said, some of us find it great having a dual headset setup, maybe most for feinschmeckers, lol.

Heh Rune, I didn't even know I was a feinschmecker.  I can hardly wait to tell my wife, lol!

I'm sure Ryte will look great with my oled Vive Pro (together with my nice new rtx3090) but I have way too many games backlogged right now.  Of course if it ends up on a Steam sale, or makes it to my VivePort Infinity sub I'll probably be unable to resist getting it, lol!

Anyone using a RTX 3090 to play VR games with a CV1 ss 2.5 is close to king of feinschmeckers  :D:wink:

That's not a bad thing in my book though  B)

I thought I'd better check on the meaning of feinschmecker just in case a rude word slipped passed my limited linguistic learnings. Google informs me... Person, die einen ausgeprägten Geschmack besonders in Bezug auf feine, ausgefallene Speisen hat

So that's ok then.

Ohhh man a 3090 card just begs for a higher native resolution headset.
Trust me on that one.
