Also this has arrived, maybe 10-20 years ago I would have been much more enthusiastic, now it kinda feels like ... work ðŸ˜¬ ðŸ˜‚

Somehow I might have broken my rule of "if it works, don't fix it" ðŸ¤”

I have too much real work the next week, don't think I'll risk being without VR for some days yet. So it'll simply have to wait some days until I feel ready to destroy the dear old beloved faithful rig - need to move the 7TB drives to the new rig and install a lot of stuff.

Spoiler
This is how you ship stuff in a country without thieves, lol:

Just saw this new trailer/video on Index Reddit - this does look great:

This is a true 20GB PCVR game - and does have great ratings on Steam. Not sure why this one flew under my radar - will give it a go later. Game is here - there's also a free demo:

According to a post by a dev, native Oculus drivers are also supported.

This highlights the main issue I have with PCVR today, and why something like Quest 2 is just the best choice. This game, Tales of Glory, is another sandbox game made by one single developer. Far from a AAA experience.

I'm sure it's fun. But it's just another Blade & Sorcery type of game, which is no different than a game for kids imo.

I get that cartoonish graphics aren't for everyone; but what does it matter if you put "grown up graphics" in a game that still plays like a cartoonish game for kids.

More evidence that graphics don't make a great game. I would rather have cartoonish graphics with compelling gameplay instead of compelling graphics with childish gameplay.

Got my two camera stands all set up in a diagonal in my room as recommended ready to go.

Going to be so nice to have hopefully solid tracking without worrying about the lighting.

Now just need the Index. C'mon Fed Ex I be a waitin for ya lol.

Index Kit has finally arrived!

Time to get busy now.

Crap this thing has a lot more cords and plugs than it shows in the setup guide, got to figure how all this goes together.

Inspiring

I'll be really interested in your comparison, I was so close to getting G2.

OK I got it now, just had to assemble power blocks for the cameras.

Everything plugged in now and ready to finish setup. Blue lights on HMD and green lights on cameras.

Here I go into Index VR!

Trying to get all the device firmwares updated. One controller is giving me trouble in that department, it is just not updating.

It says already updated one camera but I didn't, updating the other camera now and it is taking quite a while.

Edit: Ok one camera finished updating now it is letting me update the other one. Once done with that going to try that right controller again that would not update. Fun fun...

Edit: Have tried multiple times now, that right controller just will not update firmware. Guess I will have to continue on with it as is.

Try a different USB port.

Yeah I tried several.

It just won't update. Left controller updated fine.

Now trying to figure out how to get back and set up my play area, floor height is all wrong and I can not even seem to figure out where to fix this - frustration augh.

Edit: Ok found it, have to access it from desktop menu rather than in the headset menu.

Ok I finally got right controller firmware to update, seems the connection in that controller can be a little iffy. After removing and reinserting the plug into the controller a few times it kicked off and updated. Augh.

I am a little fried at this point, going to get some dinner and relax for the evening.

Will start fresh with it in the AM.

Anyone know what the button on bottom left of headset is for?

Also I thought I read it had a 3.5mm audio jack? I don't see one so far but have not looked real hard yet.

Audio does not sound that great to me, I felt the same about the Reverb G2 also though. Too quiet for starters. I am sure I will use my earbuds with this.

Guess I will just unplug my base stations for the evening still can't find a power management setting for them.

Ok - saw that you did get the controller to update, great.

The hmd button to the left is another system button. Now, if Steam is running - just press the system button on either the hmd or the turned-on controller, and then SteamVR will automatically start. It's the easiest way to start SteamVR.

Normally I just start the rig (Steam is set to start automatically) - I don't turn on my monitor - I just turn on the Index controllers, and after a few secs the hmd turns on - and I put on the hmd and SteamVR Home is ready 🙂

If you don't like the speakers - which should be identical to the G2 - there's a jack right here:

Using the frunk, you can also attach USB headphones - or whatever you like:

Also see here - some other guys had problems updating firmware and solved it using another USB-port - more here:

Also use the USB-C cables provided with the kit, just to be safe 🙂 I think you need to use the cable to connect the controller to your rig when updating (again, haven't done this since 2019, my memory might be failing me, lol).
