I played the crap out of Tetris back in the day when it was on NES and then again on SNES. (Someone make Dr mario effect pls). I also played it for years on and off with an emulator. If you've never played tetris at all it likely will last longer. It's pretty close to the same but has a lot of visual stuff going on in the background and with the pieces which is cool for awhile.

Tetris VR is probably better advertised as a Meditation App. It's easy to just zone out with all the visuals and music.

Got my VR Cover in the for Index this evening , got to use it about an hour and first impression it certainly feels more comfy than the stock Index one.

Will have a longer session with it tomorrow and see how it does.

Yeah they make good covers, did you grab any kind of lens protector for your Index, my OCD will never let me use these without some form of lens protectors on them. ha

TechRadar release an article 29 days ago. Seems they, like me, are also looking forward to Valve upgrading the Index experience for Inside-Out Tracking. All of the rumors and speculation in this article are based on the recent publication of Valve's patent for Inside-Out (wireless VR) features.

https://www.techradar.com/news/valve-index-2-rumors-predictions-and-what-we-want-from-the-vr-headset

The Valve Index 2 could be wireless, with wired capabilities becoming optional for some version of the headset. The patent shows three different headsets that explore different options between being wireless and standalone (like the Oculus Quest 2), or wirelessly connecting to a PC.

There are some fantastic VR games out there like Valve’s own Half-Life: Alyx, but a platform can’t be built on just a couple of titles.

No more base stations

Base stations are devices that help the Valve Index, and other headsets like the HTC Vive, track users, their headset and their controller in a room-scale virtual environment. While they made the headset perform well in our review, we hope that a Valve Index 2 would drop them.

Base stations aren’t the worst things in the world, but if you ever want to change up your room - or just dust it and you nudge one of the sensors - you have to go through the whole recalibration process again. It’s tedious and we could do without having to put up with them, especially as other headsets like the Oculus Rift S do fine without base stations.

It would sensible for Valve to make their own standalone options as they are missing out on quite a big market. If they could incorporate that in one headset that doesnt compromise on PCVR quality / comfort that would be great. If they keep a higher price range, they may be able do that.

I wouldnt want to see PCVR go backwards just to incorporate it, im still waiting on a true next generation device.

Maybe they are considering releasing something cheaper aimed at the entry level VR market with less luxury options.

I wouldnt mind standalone as an additional option, movies etc but its not my main interest.

I hope they would make inside / out optional. I hoped that for Oculus though but they opted for a backward step for tracking accuracy and forward step in set up convenience and for me with a dedicated room that does not benefit me at all.  Having tracking worse than my original touch controllers I bought in 2016 wouldnt impress me much.

I agree they also need to invest a lot more in games like Oculus do if they want a standalone steam store for VR. Valve though can be lazy, relying on the weight and popularity of the steam store to encourage developers to adopt. Oculus had to work a lot harder to make their store an attractive option for developers.

Luciferous - Yeah I pretty much agree with everything you stated. The only matter where I deviate a bit is in the idea around "PCVR gong backwards."

I honestly don't feel that PCVR is even a thing. It's more of a term used by gamers to identify VR-based video games that utilize high-end graphics cards.

PCVR is becoming a buzzword like, 8K Gaming.

Yet VR has never been about graphics. There are countless examples of amazing VR experiences where high-end graphics play little-to-no role whatsoever.

I tend to take the opposite position, where I would state something like:

  • I wouldn't want VR to get pigeonholed in to a gaming category, nor have VR bogged down by the notion that high-end graphics card define the VR experience.

It does seem as if Valve is moving in a direction similar to Oculus/Facebook. And I guess the manner in which they commit to that strategy (stand-alone instead of tethered PCVR) will be driven by their monetary goals. It's the difference between making a few hundred thousand dollars in profit vs making millions.

I mean the actual thin clear plastic film, i have them on all my HMDS, the Vive ones should fit the index with no issues, and there was a few instance that my glasses could have destroyed my Vive and PSVR but both were saved by a £10 plastic film, i personally would not be without them to be honest, like a cheap insurance, moreso if you wear glasses. 🙂

I sure am enjoying this play through of Alyx again in the new Index. Running 120 Hz and now at 200% SS and it is gorgeous and so smooth. Have yet to see a stutter in the controllers. Just got out of the Northern Star, there is a section in there that stumps me every time. I always get it but just takes some time of trial and error. The part where you have to put batteries in to open a door after killing the crazies. I think there is a specific order to it, I always end up getting it but never remembering how I did it.

Having to take a break to charge up the controllers again. This is where I miss being able to change the  batteries out. This will be their second charge I have given them.

The new VR Cover is definitely more comfortable to me, will not be switching back to the stock mask. Does not seem to cause me to sweat, however I also have cold air blowing down on me direct from the AC which helps. I keep this room pretty cool for playtime.

Looking forward to having a go with Boneworks once I get through this run of Alyx. Only drawback to this is it is taking some time away from DCS and flying the Hornet. I will live though lol.

Regarding Alyx, it seems that the idea of "being made for Index" is also more of a tagline/soundbite/buzzword.

Here is a full breakdown on the differences of playing Alyx on Index vs Quest 2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADm61dm4efM

Note that the user played through Alyx twice, on hardest difficulty, using Quest 2 (in addition to completing the game on the Index).

So what was the biggest difference? You can't crush cans on the Quest.

😅

Every other aspect of the game is near identical between Index and Quest 2. As the user reports, after completing the game twice on Quest 2, they experienced zero tracking issues. The only visual differences are in terms of sharpness and FOV; but those differences are only noticeable if you swap between headsets in real-time in order to force yourself to see the difference.

Not to mention that the user didn't even notice the FOV difference until they were editing their playthrough video for YouTube.

So when we hear the phrase, "Alyx was made for Index," we can safely translate that to one specific feature: Alyx gives Index users the exclusive feature of... crushing cans.

Have you tried steam VR labs are there are a few knuckle only controllers things in that can't be done without the knuckles.

Moon Dust too:

Moon Dust has several mini-games, a fun place to visit, I still use it occasionally:

- and let's not forget finger tracking which works great - did have some hiccups in the start but last year has been close to flawless:

When you get used to move all your fingers in a game, it really feels awkward, kinda amputated, when you cant. Full finger tracking adds a lot to immersion - even if it doesn't let you pick up more stuff etc.

More Index 2 speculations:

Seems to be a trustworthy site, at least they got something right, lol:

 https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-vr-headset

Quote: "There’s little doubt that the Valve Index is the next-generation VR headset people have been clamoring for: it has an ultra-crisp display that runs fairly well even with older GPUs, a wider field of view, a higher refresh rate and Valve’s 'knuckle' controllers, which can track the movement of every finger. That's why, at least right now, it's our best VR headset for 2021 and our best VR headset for PC owners."

I think you are more than safe with the Index for the next few years, hell i am still using my CV1 today so i am really looking forward to getting my hands on one and all the improvments it brings, and i have no doubt it will last me as long as the CV1 has. ha

Yeah as I mentioned early on this thing just reeks of quality. I have little doubt it will be in it for the long haul.

Back to Alyx now. Heck I thought when I got out of the building I was done with the Northern Star chapter, guess still got a little ways to go.
