There's nothing like a post confirming what some of us may enjoy to hear 😁

Didn't read his thoughts but I like the Index overall over the VP2. Too many issues and jank for me with VP2 and I returned mine despite the awesome visuals. SteamVR crashing every time, weird glitches with the Vive software.  Index just works and that does go a long way with wanting to put a VR headset on at all.  Didn't matter to me that VP2 visuals blow away Index if I didn't want to use it lol. I don't have any issues with my G2 and it's superior visually to the Index so I'll be using both for different games. Index for stuff I can't push enough for G2.

I guess I have gotten pretty lucky so far with my Vive Pro 2. Even Steam VR is behaving for me so far, better than it did with WMR for me.

Believe me I be a knocking on wood though.

Yea, I'm glad it works for you. Maybe I got a bad one or one of a bad batch but mixed opinions on reddit make that kinda hard to determine. I was having all kinds of weird things happening. Shadows disabling in my peripheral was main reason I returned. Seemed faulty. I would also get visible flickering randomly, and sometimes the small sweetspot for VFOV would bother me. When I'd look down it would be blurry because the headset shifted slightly. I also personally didn't like the foam on the headset, seemed cheap compared to the nice padding on the Index and the nose flaps on the front really annoyed my face. All in all, if I'm going to pay $800 for something I want it to be near flawless. To HTC's credit they gave me a full refund and didn't even make me pay return shipping or a restock fee. Props to them for that. But I just realized this is the Index thread.

Yea, I've come to the conclusion after using my Index for a few weeks that the glare while still very substantial it is significantly less annoying than the first Index I had. Valve probably tweaked something in the software or the first HMD had some issues. I almost don't see it at all while gaming and I checked some of the games that were really bothersome for me the first go around like Archangel. It's fine now.

Some Index dude tested and rated most of the Steam Fest demos:

The game I care most about is Undead Citadel, and it was announced for the Fest, but I can't find it anywhere 😢

First of all my greatest thanks to you all letting me know you couldn't see the columns, especially pyroth309 and Anonymous. At least for now I can't see any columns using the new hmd, really amazing! Not that it was that bad before, but this looks perfect.

I've only tested the hmd for 10 min, need to test many differently colored surfaces. Right now I'm using column correction 0 for both panels, before I had to use -7 and -8. So surely the hmds aren't similar.

Maybe I should have done this RMA a long time ago, but several users said they got new hmds and still saw the columns. And I was worried having to wait a long time when all Indices were totally sold out before Alyx arrived - and I didn't want being without the hmd when Alyx arrived.

Been doing more pixel peeping, lol. Actually the columns can still be seen, but are now much harder to see - I have to find certain colors to see them. Might be able to fine-tune columns correction settings and reduce them even further, but it's such a small detail with the new hmd I didn't bother trying to fine-tune anything for now. So all Indices and lcd hmds may have the columns, but severity may vary greatly from one hmd to another. And you may have to know what to look for, or you might never see the columns 😉

The faint dot pattern seen in red and orange colors is still there, but seems even more subtle than the old hmd. Thus pretty sure Valve did not change panels, model 1007 is still 1007 🙂

The plastic surrounding the lenses looks more black-ish than my old hmd, but that's pretty much all I've noticed of possible small changes.

Yea, if mine has them they're so subtle that it's irrelevant and a nonfactor. Mine doesn't have obvious columns and I've looked for them.

On another note, I picked up this because I was getting concerned with plugging in a USB C cable all the time for charging. These have little magnetic usb dongle things that you just drop in and they start charging on contact. Nice and compact storage for them.

Btw, glare does seem the same comparing the old (July 2019) hmd with the new hmd. But I have much experience using the right hmd tilt angle etc, and with my anti-glare coated glasses I'm really not bothered by glare - but of course I can see it when looking for it, similar to the CV1.

Having used the CV1 for a month, it's really great to have the Index back. Also the new hmd totally has that "new car smell", lol. But I also quickly noticed the usual lcd shortcomings, so really glad I still can use the CV1. I think The Persistence Enhanced is a CV1 game to me. But the more bright games belong to the Index 🙂

Btw, noticed lenses were dialed all the way in (or close) with the new hmd, pretty sure lenses were all dialed out with the old hmd.

Yea there's only so much it can tilt. I've got it as good as it can possibly get for best FoV and center of Sweetspot and minimal glare.

I'm still skeptical Anti-Glare coated glasses is doing anything for you other than preventing your lens from reflecting the light coming from the Index and creating additional glare. Would love to see some data or hear from multiple users if that actually works or not. Glare probably just doesn't bother you.

For me, the glare is quite blinding in some scenes but in normal gameplay it's fine. I also keep my eye relief all the way up to my eyes for max FoV.

I'm also completely convinced that my first headset had worse glare but I got one from the very first batch. It may have had issues.

This thread now has more than 40,000 views - nice to see. I guess we may thank Uncle Google for that, lol. Also we have collected quite some info in this thread 😎

Yeah, 40,000 is a lot considering that most of that is divided amongst only 3 posters 😉

Yeah, I guess Conan was right!

Mongol General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?

Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.

Mongol General:  Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?

Conan: To crush the Combine soldiers with your Index controllers, see it all in 144 fps using the fastest RTX card, and to hear the squeals of dying headcrabs.

Mongol General: That is good! That is good.

Strange thing, maybe, but apart from spending time with the wife and kids I think Conan is absolutely right here

Ha, these days you would have more chance defeating Conan than finding a RTX 300xx card. lol

Having spent some time with the new Index hmd, it really is a lot better. Before I couldn't help constantly searching for the columns, but now they are really gone in most games. Can still be found in games like Maskmaker staring at the very vivid and super-saturated paint colors - like blue, red, green and yellow, but even in Maskmaker the columns are very hard to spot.

Played Alyx last night, never once noticed the columns - but these were also hard to see in Alyx with my old hmd. Also in Surv1v3 I did not notice the columns.

Furthermore, with the RTX 3090 the Index has become a totally awesome VR solution - the experiences I'm getting now are simple beyond awesome. Even if the GTX 1080 was great in many games, the RTX 3090 is such a massive leap forward.

Btw, in some games, using native Steam drivers with the Index does provide some magic. Since many readers of this thread may not read my other threads, I'd like to mention that using Index res 200% (18 mill pixels per image) in Surv1v3 probably increased my fps close to 100% compared to using Rift CV1 ss 2.0 (17 mill pixels per image), even if the game does support native Oculus drivers:

This game performed about twice as good using Index res 200% than Rift CV1 ss 2.0.

Especially the opening scene totally dived to 45 fps or worse with the CV1 ss 2.0 (with no or default antialiasing) - I was getting worried my RTX 3090 was overcooking, lol - but Index res 200% was smooth as silk, even adding 4xMSAA!

This is a rare occurrence, normally CV1 ss 2.0 has the upper hand compared to Index res 200% - but also in the Tomb of Nerfertari the Index res 200% was about twice as fast as Rift CV1 ss 2.0. So there is that - and if I really looked hard, I might find a lot more apps where native Steam drivers seem to matter quite a lot. Or whatever is causing this great performance difference. 2c.
