The more we read this is looking more like a upgrade than a next generation of the current PC VR approach - a big congratulations to the Valve team for achieving this with a smaller team than other VR headset manufacturers.

Maybe an upgrade to Rift-S and O+ but to me it looks more and more like a true second gen to CV1 and the original Vive (which to me define 1st gen).

Several users do experience problems, like early Rift-S adopters, and early Index adopters probably should arm themselves with patience.

Yea, I'm sure this is why Valve did a staggered release, to minimize the damages to something like this. The Knuckles problem seems to be pretty wide spread, a lot of people complaining.

But yea, that Glare had me really down on the Index for awhile and had me ranking it under the O+ because it was so damn distracting. But, I found a way to manage it/it stopped bothering me by moving the eye relief out a little bit. I'm kind of hoping I just have a bad headset and can return it for one without so much glare but either way there's enough other positives with it that I'm over it.

Are you keeping CV1 and/or O+, and going for Index 100% - or is it too soon to tell?

I'm keeping my CV1 for now just to have a headset in case Oculus defeats Re-vive or it fails to work with a game I really want to play. My Odyssey is already sold as of this morning to my buddy. I'm just hanging onto it until my return window closes just in case. Index blacks and colors are good enough for me that I don't need the O+ anymore.

Thanks for sharing this observations.
Yes, the early teething troubles are par for the course regarding head-mounted display (HMD) deployment. And I agree not worth too much alarm. Its not as if they have left off a feature that is seen by some as essential.

The reason I do not see this as a Second Gen to the CV1/Vive First Gen is abstract, as it points to an "enhancement" of deployment rather than a brand new approach. This view is open to interpretation, as I see observers looking at the Hololens2 as a new generation, when again it is only an improvement on the previous version.

You may have seen the use of the term "enthusiast" when Index is being pitched in some reviews. Again, linking the hardware to those prepared to go the extra-mile towards VR enjoyment. Rather than being Second-Gen, I see Index as a move to the next phase of PC VR - while we have to wait and see if Rift-S can come back for the win in the face of the Cosmos/Acer, Reverb and Samsung (Q4).

To me the greatest problem with the Index is the lack of new content - nothing really happened June 28, seemed like just another ordinary day in the Steam Store.

Compare that to Valve releasing Half-Life 3 VR exclusively to Index June 28, lol. But of course Valve wouldn't exactly do that because they'd need to sell a lot of game copies to pay for the development. But a smaller remake title like Half-Life VR - done with the newest engine and high-end graphics - could have turned a lot of heads too.

Sure you can play existing games and most of us have long backlogs, but no new groundbreaking content will probably limit adoption. Then again, Valve already sold out, maybe they don't need to sell more right now ;)

The "lack of new content" comment boggles me when I have over a hundred VR games in Steam, all of which I'll be able to play in Index and many of which I haven't gotten around to yet. And more are releasing daily. No Man's Sky soon!
I'll be keeping my CV1 for the foreseeable. Unless one or both of Revive -> Index or ALVR to the Quest works 100%, in which case it seems a bit pointless as apart from the weight the Index does beat the CV1 in every particular.

BTW, I think this comparison is spot on with Tyriel Wood's experience - that Index had the best image quality of all, and I think he has tried the Reverb?

Personally if that is what its showing then fair enough. I had the rift S and the writing was way clearer to my eyes than that pic comparison. And it's a shame I sent my reverb back as the text was way clearer than that pic of the index text. I shall be waiting patiently for the Reverb ;)

Are there any text camera pics to compare those to the HP Reverb?

Yeah, I was kinda surprised - I think Valve just focused wholly on getting it out - then will go for a slow burn, with announcements keeping it relevant. We have heard very little about the three unique VR titles in the works - so expect a big push on them. Also there has been a list of Index Controller supported titles that numbered over 50 - so seems that also has some focus. Noticed that the SteamVR page has a new Index icon so again, slow burn.

Best o could find that isn't MRTV is this by DCS Hoggit, whilst not text this clearly shows what I was seeing with the Reverb.

Yea I haven't had a problem finding content. I have close to 200 there myself, plus my Viveport subscription.

Of course there're many old games to play, my point being seeing new content that fully supports Knuckles. Something made from the ground up for Index + Knuckles, and it seems I'm not alone:
