Not all CV1 dudes are happy for the Index:

Index gives me no presence :(

I just did some A/B testing with my CV1 using The Blu, Google Earth, Space Pirate Trainer, Bridge Crew, and Vox Machinae. With the CV1, it feels like I'm in another world. With Index, it feels like I'm looking through a screen. It's not as 3D and the sense of scale isn't there either.

I have an IPD of 64 so nothing weird. I'm thinking it comes down to OLED vs LCD -- the grayish film on the LCD completely prevents me from being immersed in the world. It sucks because everything is crystal clear in the Index and 120hz is smooth as butter. The Index speakers are phenomenal. But I have zero presence! I would say even my DK2 back in the day gave me more presence.

I guess it's time to try a Vive Pro next?

As I once wrote - the black lines between colored ones in the CV1 (creating the SDE) are places where our brains fill in the gaps when we move - like scanlines on a CRT, maybe this creates some special kind of magic lost when you add all the pixels and make the image more "PC like"... You break or diminish the illusion? Now I haven't tried any HMD using LCD, but I do understand the dude - because in the CV1 I feel awesome presence in The Blu and especially in Space Pirate Trainer.

Peculiar. I don't get that at all, immersion is only improved by the Index. But that's humans for you - perception and indeed biology varies between individuals, and visual systems are prone to acting strangely.

BTW, I think this comparison is spot on with Tyriel Wood's experience - that Index had the best image quality of all, and I think he has tried the Reverb?

Personally if that is what its showing then fair enough. I had the rift S and the writing was way clearer to my eyes than that pic comparison. And it's a shame I sent my reverb back as the text was way clearer than that pic of the index text. I shall be waiting patiently for the Reverb ;)

Yup, I agree. The Rift S display isn't quite as clear as the Index screenshot but it's not too far off either.

Nothing that I wasn't expecting tbh, we are comparing a 1440p headset with a 1600p headset after all, there isn't a great deal of difference in resolution. This is why I was so pissed off with Valve opting for 1600p, for £920 I would expect 2160p resolution.

These through the lens photos are a waste of time....they are no indication of what you actually see in the headset. Folks just read into them what they want to see.

VR headset performance has become so subjective - with personal preferences sneaking in, and the issue of being able to accurately represent the image. Remember all the ho-ha we had over if there was or was not God Rays in the first CV1's. Its best that we make our own minds up - and that you have had a chance to try a CV1 and use that as a base is helpful but not definitive.

I think 2160 is too high for most users, even 1600@144Hz is pushing the limit of high-end video cards.

Maybe $399 is a nice price, but then I asked Gabe to increase the res for $75, and gave him another $25 for physical IPD adjustment - and $150 to ensure proper sound. And he wanted $200 for upgrading Touch to Knuckles, and another $150 to fix the tracking. Somehow I lost track of all the extra prices, and now I just want to pay and get my stuff  o:) ;)

Valve Index Resolution -  1440 x 1600 per eye Full RGB LCD 90/120/144hz
Rift S Resolution - 1280 x 1440 per eye LCD 80hz
Quest Resolution - 1440 x 1600 per eye - OLED 72 hz

This is just confusing me.

Then why the heck did you ask Gabe to add the God Rays and Glare back !?
