Vive Pro owners may not benefit enough from Index - and that's why HTC might not have to fear the Index...:

Quote: "Conclusion/TLDR In the end I decided that the $1000 I paid for the full package didn't justify the side grade that the Index offered and sold it on Ebay. It gave me another point of comparison to be eager when in a few years all these features can come together into a single headset. I was hoping the Index would be it, but its not quite there."

I have a feeling this is another guy that needs glasses. Can't take his SDE comment seriously. But I do agree if you already own a Vive Pro with a gear mod it's not worth it for sure.

Is the finger tracking still acting up on your @pyroth309, or have you managed to circumvent it?

I got better at locking my hand down with the strap and positioned it better so my fingers rest flatly on the sensor. Haven't had any problems with the tracking since I did that.

 was referring to this post above by runesr2. and imho the glare test does show black for the index on the left side of the picture as grey. so the above quote is true. and i did say its because of the fresnel lens so if you turned your head as you said here, it would appear black;

Gotcha. Yea that post was mostly nonsense. He probably has the faded color bug and needs to do the update.

The Index blacks are objectively darker than the Rift-S and you can see how black the Rift-S looks there. That's what I see in my headset is a dark black when I look away from the Logo. But if I turn toward the logo and god rays catch my lens... that pic is what you get.

Yeah something is off when you consider the Index is supposed to have better black then Rift S. At the very least you need to make sure that the angle of the camera relative to the lens is equal for all shots, for then to have any value. Notice how the index image is almost straight, while all the others come from an angle.

And so as a totally unscientific experiment, I tried to adjust the contrast levels to match the index example. And it paints a totally different picture. After the adjustment the Rift-S still has much less glare, but the difference is not day and night as it was before. And I have to say the Odyssey is looking very good.

Well, I mean you do have a point about the inconsistent angles but, The Index really does look like that in a high contrast scene. The light kind of smears everywhere. The image just looks gray because of the white light on top of the dark. White + Black make gray heh. I was just pointing out that the index panels have darker blacks than the Rift-S without the god rays lightening it and it's not an indication of its black levels. It's an indication of just how bad the glare is.

And yea, the O+ image is great. I hold it in high regard. The lenses are a challenge to get used to but it has great picture once you get the Render Target Scale to 2.0 and supersample it to 200% and the colors are really good.

Seems like CV1 owners are most happy for the Index:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/c7pncy/people_coming_from_cv1_how_are_you_finding_the/

But of course they aren't fooling me - CV1 was my first love, it can never be beaten ;-) but I might appreciate having the Index just to provide some variation ;)

Also part of getting the Index - for me - is to show my appreciation for Valve's commitment and dedication to high-end PCVR. Rift-S is looking better with 1.39, but tracking never was the only issue for me - it's also the sound and the headband (and I'm still not convinced new Touch is better, also regarding battery drain - and then there's the need to have light in the room, I like darkness). Just give me a new CV1 with the Rift-S screen and change nothing else ;)

BTW, can't really see much SDE when I focus on nearby (close) objects using the CV1, but it's easy to see SDE on distant objects, I wonder if accommodation plays a trick here... I find CV1 image quality really perfect when staring at stuff up to 1 meter away, lol...

BTW, my sons love VR - they never mention SDE, fps or anything - they just love being immersed. Sometimes I wonder how many non-enthusiasts really notice things like res, SDE, god rays, pure blacks - but maybe they do notice having to set up sensors and headphones getting tangled up in long hair, lol. Of course it makes sense for Oculus to focus on easy of use for normal users.

BTW, I think this comparison is spot on with Tyriel Wood's experience - that Index had the best image quality of all, and I think he has tried the Reverb?

Personally if that is what its showing then fair enough. I had the rift S and the writing was way clearer to my eyes than that pic comparison. And it's a shame I sent my reverb back as the text was way clearer than that pic of the index text. I shall be waiting patiently for the Reverb ;)

Yeah that pic of the S can't be right, it can't look that bad at
1440X1280, not when a first gen WMR Dell visor headset at 1440x1440 awhich has a cheap lcd panel looks better than it, with a photo taken through one of the lens with a ancient
nokia windows phone, that makes it look as good as good as the
index......something not right somewhere.

Yea up close the CV1 looks great and it's actually more immersive to me in some games than the Index is. SDE disappears on the images up close for me, but like you said, anything mid to long range is not good in it. I'm still trying to figure out why it's more immersive in some games. Some of it is probably the LCD panel, some of it is maybe the increased clarity of the Index revealing flaws that are hidden behind the SDE. I think your brain kind of cheats and fills in the gaps perfectly heh. It's not the glare because it's at worst on par with the CV1 god rays. Some of it just may be I need a better GPU to push these games as hard as I could on the CV1 to make them seem more realistic. IDK but it's definitely weighing on my ultimate decision to keep the Index or not. So far i'm 80/20 in favor.

I meant the lack of glare test shots
