some musing on my part about the index.
after reading some negative reviews, i dont have the index myself i cant afford it right now. im going to be building a new ryzen 5 3600 pc and getting a new videocard before i upgrade from my rift, maybe christmas 2020.

anywho, i see the fov is up and down more than side to side. a bad idea because the fov shows virtual desktop theater screens where the sides are seen and the top and bottom stretches. thats immersion breaking, the sides should be wide enough you cant see the sides of the theater screen. if you lose some of the up down fov this fixes it but then you lose some fov thats not nice and shiny.

the pc requirements are high, rtx 2080 is a 1000 dollar videocard; https://www.newegg.ca/p/pl?N=100007708%20601321493

you can get by with the new rtx 2070 super which should be cheaper, too bad im pricing the 2060 super instead i might have to go whole hog and look at the 2070 super instead, and why if im in the 1 percent of people who have one where is the customers for this its like the neo geo console that had a small consumer base or the laser tag gun game for kids way back that nobody bought, i dont want to be in that small minority believing in the crowd when its only me and a small handful of people.

and the grey black and glare test looks bad. i see more artifact on the left side than the right which shows me this is a fresnel lens problem. the ipd is too small making the artifact on the peripheral come into the sweet spot which shows up as poor glare test. you need to make the sweet spot have good fresnel lens results. notice on the rift s picture the right side is crisper than the left side? thats the fresnel lens sweet spot at work. you might need lenses twice as big  :p to stretch out the sweet spot and keep the same fov.

If you're talking about the blacks in this pic up above, that's not indicative of the Index blacks. The gray there is from the damn glare illuminating the whole lens. It actually feels like the lenses are glowing with your eye in it and is very distracting/immersion breaking. If he would turn his head and look left or right from the logo it's dark black. I've done the glare test about a dozen times by now lol.

Fortunately, it doesn't do it much that you can notice while gaming/playing but it does happen occasionally.

Black levels:

The blacks DO LOOK GREY… it’s completely unacceptable, almost game breaking if you ask me, if you are used to playing something like PAVLOV you are DONE… It will literally look like crap; it’s incredible, especially in something like OFFICE. The darks are so light it’s not even funny. THE. INDEX. LOOKS. GREY. IN. DARK. SCENES. PERIOD.

i was referring to this post above by runesr2. and imho the glare test does show black for the index on the left side of the picture as grey. so the above quote is true. and i did say its because of the fresnel lens so if you turned your head as you said here, it would appear black;

"

"

having seen this distortion in the cv1 on the peripheral outside of the sweet spot i can say i think its the same distortion here on the left side of the glare test for the index. if they increased the size of the lenses to match the pimax 5k plus size the sweet spot would increase so the glare seen on the left side of the glare test would be reduced or gone.

this is the effect seen while using the rift s with a large 73 ipd, a small sweet spot and lots of artifacts near the sweet spot on one side of the lens, ugly.

like only having one good arm;

Gotcha. Yea that post was mostly nonsense. He probably has the faded color bug and needs to do the update.

The Index blacks are objectively darker than the Rift-S and you can see how black the Rift-S looks there. That's what I see in my headset is a dark black when I look away from the Logo. But if I turn toward the logo and god rays catch my lens... that pic is what you get.

Well I've made my mind up I'm going for something different. I don't want anything like glare in a headset that cost £920 I

BTW, I think this comparison is spot on with Tyriel Wood's experience - that Index had the best image quality of all, and I think he has tried the Reverb?

Well Tyriel Woods is wrong because that's nothing like what I saw in the Rift S. Text is much clearer then that in the Rift S. I hate it when people take pictures that don't represent the real thing and this text looks nothing like this in the Rift S.The text in the Rift S doesn't look that far away from the Valve index pic above from what I saw when I had the Rift S.
The Vavle index only has a bit of a bump in resolution over the Rift S, and I'm sorry but it doesn't produce those type of results with such a small bump in resolution. If it does then the Valve index would be a 1080p monitor in the VR world and HP Reverb would be a 4k to 8k monitor in VR.

VR headset performance has become so subjective - with personal preferences sneaking in, and the issue of being able to accurately represent the image. Remember all the ho-ha we had over if there was or was not God Rays in the first CV1's. Its best that we make our own minds up - and that you have had a chance to try a CV1 and use that as a base is helpful but not definitive.

I think this is spot on - after having read I don't know how many opinions and reviews regarding the Index. So much may depend on your preferences for Hz, blacks, IPD, sound, comfort etc that one person's opinion may greatly differ from another person.
With that said it does seem like all the "pros" like the Index best - like Ben Lang from RoadToVR - even if glare might be a problem in dark places. Generally it seems that you don't notice the glare (much) in games, like when using the CV1. Personally I think the Index looks awesome due to the 120-144 Hz, fov, sound, tracking and the Knuckles, but I plan to keep the CV1 as backup. And the Index colors and blacks have been measured to be better than Rift-S - and Index SDE and image quality seem to be the best you can get right now if you're not into the Reverb (but Reverb is not a HMD made for gaming). Then again, new HMDs arrive frequently these days, maybe we'll soon see something even better...

Vive Pro owners may not benefit enough from Index - and that's why HTC might not have to fear the Index...:

Quote: "Conclusion/TLDR In the end I decided that the $1000 I paid for the full package didn't justify the side grade that the Index offered and sold it on Ebay. It gave me another point of comparison to be eager when in a few years all these features can come together into a single headset. I was hoping the Index would be it, but its not quite there."

Engadget loves the Index, quote:

"The Valve Index has almost everything we want in a next-generation PC VR headset. It delivers excellent image quality, believable VR presence and it has a revolutionary pair of motion tracking controllers. It’s just too bad it’s so expensive, but hopefully its innovations will spur on cheaper competition [...] At the least, Valve is reminding us that there's still a place for high-end VR. The Oculus Quest might be cheaper and more convenient, but it'll always be limited by its mobile hardware. With the Index, the VR possibilities seem endless."

I agree, it's a bummer that so much Glare is in a $1000 headset kit.

I haven't looked through a Rift-S to comment on that and I'm not sure what that image is from but I can say the Index does have a very clear and a sharp image (in normal scenes without glare going on). That text looks close to other Text I've seen in it.  There's more to clarity in VR than just screen resolution.

Regarding the Glare, after playing around in the Glare test room again, I've noticed that it's the worst on the bottom of the lens. I redid my straps and seated the headset lower on my head and the glare isn't very distracting it just kind of hovers along the bottom of the lenses and I can still see through it clearly. Seems to be another one of those face shape deals. This allowed me to bring the lenses with the eye relief knob back up close to my eye for full FoV again and so far I'm having better results like this.
