Next step won't be until someone gets eye-tracked foveated rendering right. That'll be killer, because it'll allow crazy high-res screens with sane video cards.
Having been in it again today, the Index is still pretty dang good. It really feels like a boosted CV1, visuals/audio/comfort and the controllers are a superset of the Touch. It's very very familiar to a CV1 owner.

hey just wanted to ask anyone that has an index if they need as much super sampling as they did with the CV1 ? or do you use the same ?

Also as its a higher resolution if its set to 90hz does it require substantial more horsepower than the CV1 ?

I have a GTX 1080 and i7 8700 k and wondered if i would need to upgrade the GPU for 90hz ? I don't think it would do 120 hz but i would be happy at 90 refresh.

My favorite review today - from a CV1 vet  ;)

Seems like Knuckles controller problems aren't big.

I left it at defaults for SS. Less need to tweak when you've got *real* pixels :)
Horsepower I can't say - I jumped from 980ti to 2080ti at the same time I got the Index. Expensive month.

I agree with this guy on basically everything - except I don't think Valve should be let off about the thumbstick click problem that's apparently widespread. Mine work perfectly, but if they didn't that would be a fail and return.
All the other things he says match my experience too, being a CV1 user from launch day who also had a Vive for a while.

Summary of the summary: It's a great headset. It's not a phenomenal "VR Generation 2!!!"* by any means. It may not be worth your while upgrading because it's way expensive, but there's no doubt at all that it is an upgrade from CV1 or S.

*Actually generation 7 or so, noobs! My word it was awful back in the 90s, and Division headsets were major corporate purchases not for gaming, but those low-res line graphics and magnetic positional trackers were still amazing.

Well technically it's the third commercial generation, the first being in the 80s and the second in the 90s.

Personally I see the Pimax, Vive Pro, Index, Reverb and Rift S as the fourth commercial generation of VR but everyone else seems to be calling it 1.5.

Seems the Index isnt it.
So I wonder what new headset is going to be the new hype for Its gonna kill Oculus headset.

I never really saw Valve claiming Index was a CV1 killer - that was more selective posters. But, regarding the next headset that will cause a stir - I am looking forward to this AR/VR hybrid that Samsung have been linked too. Especially coming from the second most successful consumer headset manufacturer.

@kevinw729 - There was talk about this Samsung headset back in Sept 2018 and I've still heard nothing more about it? I take that to mean it's a long way of from being launch.

MRTV (Sebastian) now has tested Index for 3 days and he found that the main problem is the glare, but also that Index has less glare than both CV1 and Vive Pro, so glare may not matter that much. The Index does get hot, but only on the outside so the heat does not affect eyes or face. He concludes, like Oasis, that Index + Knuckles currently is the best way to experience VR:

Every time he tries a new headset he says that's the best way to experience VR  :D
A PC with lots of gadgets inside and a thing to see in 3D that you put on your head.
