Here's mine...

I'm a huge fan of The Metal but I think I'll start with some of my legendary, less angry, favorites.

Probably my favorite band of all time across all genres is Primus. I've seen them live twice, and I've seen Les Claypool live in his solo act once.

It all started with "Jerry was a Race car driver"

For those who don't know Les, fun fact: he once audition for Metallica and they denied him based solely on the fact that he is far too damn good for them.

I've seen tons of bands live (Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Korn, System of a Down, Pantera, Slipknot, Lamb of God - to name a few). But Primus is the band that showed me first hand the largest mosh pit I've ever seen, and it was to this mighty cute song:

A few thousand people went ape shit at the 1:37 mark.

I hold in high regard just about everything Claypool releases; if I had to pick a favorite song it is simply, Here Come The Bastards

Two questions:

1) Where the hell did they find so many CRT tellies? :o

2) Why the hell aren't they beating that ginger-haired stepchild? >:)

@Snowdog - love Crossroads such a great movie, not sure what side you fall on but I think Ry Cooder is the better guitar player, or at least more tonally versatile. Though Vai is definitely one of the better flash guitar players to come out of the 80s (though I prefer his Strat tone when he was with Zappa).

Yup, I'd agree with that too. And out of Satriani and Vai, Vai is the better guitar player but Satriani is the better composer.

And Zappa is the best guitarist that's ever lived, pisses all over Hendrix.

I'm also a big fan of Sultana too.

Hey now - let's not get crazy (I'm a huge Hendrix fan), and while I can definitely admit Hendrix is not the best guitar player in the world, he was a great songwriter and the variety of tones he was able to achieve in the studio is second to none. He still has the best distortion tone ever - how he made distortion sexy is beyond me.

It's funny you mention Zappa and Hendrix in the same sentence - because despite their complete difference in approach (Hendrix opting for a more crowd pleasing style of arrangement, and Zappa... well Zappa covering literally almost every genre style ever through his own filter over the course of his career), I've always felt they were equal musicians as far as playing goes. Zappa was never technically the "best" player in his band(s) as even though he demanded note for note perfection from all his members if you listen to his own solos/playing his approach is more blues based (even with his absurd use of voicing's and time signatures), he allows himself more rope when it comes to off notes and such - and he does have a bag of stock licks that you hear him use quite a bit live (he has this weird pull off style that I really only hear him use).

That is why I can always tell when it is Zappa playing whatever album of his I listen to - the only player I feel he let have the same type of freedom was Adrian Belew who was not a studied guitar player when he joined Zappa, but had a similar approach to playing that most 60s guitar players had (including Zappa). Compared to Vai who plays so technically proficient across everything he does which is amazing despite the trade off of happy accidents (something that Zappa had many of).

I often wonder where Hendrix would have gone with music had he lived - his posthumous releases indicate that he was well on his way to getting into funk based rhythm's but I also feel he would have delved deep into jazz and likely would have brushed up on his theory as he hit his 30s. I also believe that he would have been one of the few artists from the 60s to translate well into the 80s due to his fascination with studio technology and tone.

My favourite Hendrix Cover ever:

Well you guys obviously just temporarily forgot about David Gilmour...

I'm still amazed when I watch him playing Us And Them on the Classic Albums program - maestronic! If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be playing guitar myself. The first acoustic song I learned was Wish You Were Here and I bought an electric solely on the back of Shine On You Crazy Diamond - which was the first tune I learned on it (took me 10 months!).

I always worried that learning to play would make me respect him less, but the opposite is the case. After I saw him at The Royal Albert a few years back, I couldn't stop humming the Echoes reprise intro to myself for weeks and weeks - so I learned to play that, too!

Along with that great solo from Pompeii, of course!

Gilmour is a good guitarist but not anywhere near as great as the likes of Zappa, Hendrix, Satriani, Vai and Sultana imo. Not a million miles away from it but he's not QUITE there. Same with Clapton too.
