Here's mine...

I'm a huge fan of The Metal but I think I'll start with some of my legendary, less angry, favorites.

Probably my favorite band of all time across all genres is Primus. I've seen them live twice, and I've seen Les Claypool live in his solo act once.

It all started with "Jerry was a Race car driver"

For those who don't know Les, fun fact: he once audition for Metallica and they denied him based solely on the fact that he is far too damn good for them.

I've seen tons of bands live (Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Korn, System of a Down, Pantera, Slipknot, Lamb of God - to name a few). But Primus is the band that showed me first hand the largest mosh pit I've ever seen, and it was to this mighty cute song:

A few thousand people went ape shit at the 1:37 mark.

I hold in high regard just about everything Claypool releases; if I had to pick a favorite song it is simply, Here Come The Bastards

Somebody mention Frank Zappa?

Gotta be the best song by an American band...

I love this whole concert - was the first live Frank Zappa I bought!

I wonder how Zappa would have gone over these days with lyrics like that LOL

That said - when you can play this well, does it really matter:

Zappa live was amazing, all of his live guitar solos were different. He wanted his audience to get a unique experience every time for their money.

Funniest Zappa story I heard was when one of his fans sent him a lump of poo in a glass case that was hand moulded into a near enough perfect spear lol. And he thought it was awesome :D

It's weird, I grew up in the 80's listening to all of the flash/shred/Neo-classical guitarists like Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Malmsteen, Vai, and Paul Gilbert etc. More recently I'm into Jeff Loomis, Buckethead, John Petrucci etc. But I can put Hendrix on and I love it and for the vast majority of Zappa's music I don't. The style is just not for me I guess. (I have similar issues with some of Satch) but I can definitely see Zappa's skill as well as the influence he had on some of the aforementioned players.

To take things in a very different direction to the last pages, here's Yoko Takahashi doing a live performance of her most famous song: Cruel Angel's Thesis (opening of Neon Genesis Evangelion).

Just look at the audience! Japan really loves it's anime.

I think the issue with Zappa for a lot of people is two-fold - his instrumental stuff explores atonality and abrasive rhythm structures fairly frequently, and his lyrical music usually resides in not-so-subtle satire. Both of which are not the most resonant forms of expression with most people.

That said - if you are able to overcome those issues and open yourself
to his music there are plenty of rewards to be found even if it takes some digging through his rather large discography.

Also compared to all the guitarists you mentioned - Zappa still has more in common with blues and roots music despite his compositions being much more far reaching than that style of music.

A little bit of best music bands from my personal top.

Here is one unpopular project of folk, ambient and post-rock music. I like it:

Love this song / album - the studio version is great too.

I know this is a little softer - but it is one of my favourite songs of all time, it is what I use to tell if a guitar is worth buying or not when I go in music stores.
