Here's mine...

I'm a huge fan of The Metal but I think I'll start with some of my legendary, less angry, favorites.

Probably my favorite band of all time across all genres is Primus. I've seen them live twice, and I've seen Les Claypool live in his solo act once.

It all started with "Jerry was a Race car driver"

For those who don't know Les, fun fact: he once audition for Metallica and they denied him based solely on the fact that he is far too damn good for them.

I've seen tons of bands live (Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Korn, System of a Down, Pantera, Slipknot, Lamb of God - to name a few). But Primus is the band that showed me first hand the largest mosh pit I've ever seen, and it was to this mighty cute song:

A few thousand people went ape shit at the 1:37 mark.

I hold in high regard just about everything Claypool releases; if I had to pick a favorite song it is simply, Here Come The Bastards

Here's the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan playing my favourite Hendrix song:

Another one of my favourite guitarists.

By the way, I'm not dissing Hendrix at all. Just saying that Zappa was better! Hendrix ended up giving Zappa the guitar that he burnt on stage and Frank gave it to Dweezil in the 80s.

I'm just giving you guff because you said "piss all over Hendrix" which is just blasphemy!!

But again, when it comes to true musicianship there is no "better" or "worse." These artists didn't write music to compete with other artists. They wrote expressions of their thoughts, feelings, creativity, etc. If guitarists started writing music based solely on competing with other guitarists, then the selection of music would be quite terrible.

By stating that one is better than the other you are creating competition where none exists while diluting the contributions they both made to music.

That's great that Hendrix gave Zappa his guitar, but no one should warp that gesture in to some sort of competitive victory. They both had respect for each other as peers; Zappa played a Tribute to Hendrix:

Does that mean Zappa admits Hendrix is better??

Besides, there is something very key in their playstyles that you are overlooking. Hendrix performed highly complex techniques with masterful accuracy "without looking" and often while singing. Zappa often kept his guitar playing simple while he was actually singing, and his legendary techniques were primarily executed when he stopped singing as he focused on his playing.

Hendrix didn't need to focus on his hands or guitar; Hendrix was focus.

Also, here is a picture of my small Hendrix collection. The originally released album and the full guitar tab publication (published in 1989).

Actually Hendrix gave that to Frank because they were friends. :)

Well let's allow Frank to explain the truth of that scenario:

Q: How did you come to own your fire-damaged ex-Jimi Hendrix Strat?

Frank Zappa:

“Well, there was this guy named Howard Parker – they called him ‘H’ – who was Hendrix’s roadie, gofer and general assistant. He stayed at our house for a couple of months in the late ’60s, and he had this guitar which Hendrix had given to him – I thought it was from the Miami concert. He gave it to me and we had it hanging on the wall as a decoration for years and years, and then I met some guys who were capable of putting guitars back together, so I had it done.”

“I’ve used it on a couple of tracks, although I can’t remember which ones off-hand. I haven’t played it all that often, because unless you’re in the right environment and you’re standing in exactly the right relationship to the amplifier, it likes to feed back all the time.”

Their relationship began as peers:

Zappa's first encounter with Hendrix was at a show, and the story is rather funny.

Great to see that not ALL school kids in the world are listening and performing (c)rap and crappy dance shite. SOME kids are actually playing REAL INSTRUMENTS!

Perhaps there's hope for the future of music after all..?

I also love folk-rock, in particular Al Stewart and the early Heart before they started to lose the folk and went for a commercial rock sound. The first two albums, Dreamboat Annie (what I'm going to name my Anaconda when I eventually buy it in Elite Dangerous) and Little Queen were amazing albums, Magazine wasn't bad but it was nowhere as good as their first two and it was all downhill from the fourth album onwards.

Here's Sylvan Song/Dream Of The Archer back in 95 from a live unplugged album they released called On The Road Home:

They both used to be bloody gorgeous in the 70s but from that video it's looking like Ann Wilson has put on a bit of weight. I still wouldn't kick either one out of bed though tbh lol

There's still some talented kids out there for sure. This kid actually sounds close to Johan Hegg which is nuts.

Love Heart - especially after I found out they were Canadian. I am not the most nationalist person - I mean my hockey team is the Bruins even though I grew up in Alberta and BC. But when it comes to music - I love really good Canadian rock music.

I am still torn up by the death of Gord Downie - I have known the Hip as long as I have lived, they have always been around up here. Their sound is ingrained in me more than our national anthem - and he was my favourite front man of all time. He is so off-the-wall yet honest in his delivery, and his rants are just second to none.

However even though they were always around - I was never an ardent fan, until I saw this concert.

Instantly changed me to a fan - and I have gone on to listen to all their albums and his solo albums.
