Here's mine...

I'm a huge fan of The Metal but I think I'll start with some of my legendary, less angry, favorites.

Probably my favorite band of all time across all genres is Primus. I've seen them live twice, and I've seen Les Claypool live in his solo act once.

It all started with "Jerry was a Race car driver"

For those who don't know Les, fun fact: he once audition for Metallica and they denied him based solely on the fact that he is far too damn good for them.

I've seen tons of bands live (Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Korn, System of a Down, Pantera, Slipknot, Lamb of God - to name a few). But Primus is the band that showed me first hand the largest mosh pit I've ever seen, and it was to this mighty cute song:

A few thousand people went ape shit at the 1:37 mark.

I hold in high regard just about everything Claypool releases; if I had to pick a favorite song it is simply, Here Come The Bastards

Me but that's probably obvious. Anyway off top of my head, love Meshuggah, Sikth,  Hypno5e, Animals as Leaders, Textures,  Periphery & Tesseract musically (the poppy vocals irritate me on a lot of songs), Vildhjarta, Cloudkicker, Cilice, Mudvayne (i'd place some of their songs into mathmetal anyway), Dillinger Escape Plan..etc.

I've always been a big fan of Jeff Loomis since the early Nevermore days. Not only does he possess ridiculous guitar talent, he's a great riff and songwriter and live he plays so clean. Easily my favorite Metal Guitarist.

A quick follow up on the concept of "Math Metal"

Here is a great breakdown and explanation of the math behind one of Tool's epic songs:

At last I just found my favourite performance of this song. Us boys always used to sing along when we were young and it was on the radio quite often (either BBC Overseas service or BFBS) - much better than the upbeat versions, I think:

Lou Reed's cover of Solsbury Hill sounds nothing like the original - but there is just such a vibe going here that gets me every time I listen. The way the drums come at the end of the song, just brilliant.

Original of Solsbury Hill for reference - this video is still so bizarre.

Paul Simon's cover also sounds different - and much prettier than Lou's cover. I particularly like his chorus section and the strings and production about 2 minutes in. I've learned Paul's version of this song on my acoustic - it was the perfect song for Paul to cover

I think most of Peter Gabriel's songs were masterpieces. The guy was a genius.

This was another of my childhood faves - and remains so. I recently learned to play it - not difficult, only 3 or 4 chords, it's the orchestral bits I struggle with!  :D

Compare it with the live version:

I was thinking it was probably the uneducated youngsters who think it's a Marc Almond song that clicked the dislike...

unaware it was just another of many works of art from the '60's and '70's. A couple of years back I made a DVD of all our family's faves from those decades (made up of vids from YT) - it was 3½ hours long. I sent a copy to each member of the family. My parents still regularly watch the whole thing through from start to finish.
