Here's mine...

I'm a huge fan of The Metal but I think I'll start with some of my legendary, less angry, favorites.

Probably my favorite band of all time across all genres is Primus. I've seen them live twice, and I've seen Les Claypool live in his solo act once.

It all started with "Jerry was a Race car driver"

For those who don't know Les, fun fact: he once audition for Metallica and they denied him based solely on the fact that he is far too damn good for them.

I've seen tons of bands live (Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Korn, System of a Down, Pantera, Slipknot, Lamb of God - to name a few). But Primus is the band that showed me first hand the largest mosh pit I've ever seen, and it was to this mighty cute song:

A few thousand people went ape shit at the 1:37 mark.

I hold in high regard just about everything Claypool releases; if I had to pick a favorite song it is simply, Here Come The Bastards

Still influenced by the music from "TO THE TOP" - and if there's an act from that sountrack that caught my ear it's Future Islands.

Maybe they're well known abroad, but they've gotten ZERO air time here.

What sets them apart from many other bands in the genre is the frontman .. the first few times you see him perform you're like "dafuq just happened".. be it when he suddenly growls or pulls Bruce Springsteen dance moves.

Pretty unique sound there, @Wildt

I wasn't sure I was gonna like it, but I kept watching and listening... and the frontman won me over.

Yeah, he's one of a kind for sure :)

And the 100% opposite of Sting who's so into the craftsmanship that he's devoid of any emotion when performing.

@Wildt

I saw Sting with Paul Simon - he was awesome to watch, a very cool intensity.

That said - that guy is a very interesting front man who totally made me watch the video until the end. I would love to see them add a guitar player, or get an additional keyboard player who could add a little more expression to the music to match what the front man is doing. The arrangement for the song was fine for the genre but the lack of any lead instrument could get a little boring. But I am going to listen to some more of their stuff - because the vocal performance was really good. The song reminded me of Rod Stewart too.

As for unsung heroes - one of my favourite guitar players (and my favourite front man for King Crimson) is Adrian Belew:

Whether he is solo, playing with Zappa, Bowie, Talking Heads or King Crimson - his tone and style are unmistakable. He does not get enough attention for his contributions.

This is actually my fave Sting performance (all of his Live Aid numbers - not just this one)

playing mistakes and all... and forgetting words and repeating bits.... shows he's human after all.

I do agree, but knowing that he's mentally not engaged in the emotions the song is conveying, turns me off a bit. He's said this himself numerous times - he's just focused on giving the perfect performance.

I remember one time on Leno when they talked about the lyrics before he went on stage, and he actually made a mistake during the song, and subsequently, jokingly blamed Leno for making him think about the words he was singing.

In that regard I feel Sam Herring is his opposite.

But at the end of the day maybe I'm just naive and buying an act - who knows? ::smiley:

I would have loved to see Talking Heads live, the shows look so exhausting.
I mean, during the second solo of Life During Wartime (LA 1983) David just starts running laps of the stage!
