The Music Thread

Share some of your favorite songs, artists, ideas, creations, etc.

Here's mine...

I'm a huge fan of The Metal but I think I'll start with some of my legendary, less angry, favorites.

Probably my favorite band of all time across all genres is Primus. I've seen them live twice, and I've seen Les Claypool live in his solo act once.

It all started with "Jerry was a Race car driver"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBQ2305fLeA

For those who don't know Les, fun fact: he once audition for Metallica and they denied him based solely on the fact that he is far too damn good for them.

I've seen tons of bands live (Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Korn, System of a Down, Pantera, Slipknot, Lamb of God - to name a few). But Primus is the band that showed me first hand the largest mosh pit I've ever seen, and it was to this mighty cute song:

A few thousand people went ape shit at the 1:37 mark.

I hold in high regard just about everything Claypool releases; if I had to pick a favorite song it is simply, Here Come The Bastards

Dream on.

I know the Waters fanboys refuse to accept it,

I don't see any fanboys, just musical opinions. In fact, you're the only one with an emotional reaction - which I suppose makes your more of a fangirl in this case. Either way, try having an intellectual approach instead of just flinging poop. There's enough monkeys in the world for that.

Ah Mr Perfection turns up to start aggro yet again. I don't need to justify myself to you, but just to ask - how many times have you been banned? And I suppose those bans were for keeping control of yourself?

Nuff said. And look at this - like in the other thread where you were determined to draw me in - I'm walking away and letting you live your little dream to your heart's content. Because that's something I am able to do - walk away and let you rant and think yourself so clever - and in these cases, with a happy smile on my face.

Shame you can never do the same.

Ah, Captain Contradiction suffers from short term memory loss yet again. It was you dishing out the pointless insults in what was otherwise a very civil discussion.

What do my bans have to do with anything? Besides, last I check the Mods have warned you twice for personal attacks. How many warnings do you need?

Pure nonsense. You've walked in to multiple threads to attack people (myself included). But you are really bad at it since you alternate between whining and complaining.

Like I said, try to offer something intellectual next time. Your contributions really serve no purpose amongst a group of adults - and in this case, adults who can appreciate the art of Music.

If you're referring to the "fangirl" comment, I use it only after someone drops a "fanboy" insult. And it is done to illustrate how pointless it is to use such insults in the first place. It has nothing to do with painting women in a negative light.

Even though women should ALWAYS be painted in a negative light...unless of course they're doing what they are BORN to do and cooking, cleaning and popping out kids  :p

Well lets get back on topic with Music!

I expect a thread like this to have some debate on occasion. Afterall, the top 3 universally are, in order:
  1. Religion
  2. Politics
  3. Music

And Music has been a medium to express Politics and Religions since their inception. But lets refrain from "namecaling" during these Musical disagreements. I know snowdog and myself (for example) had a very passionate disagreement over Jimmy Hendrix! lol - but at no point did we make it personal and call each other names.

If someone can't handle some musical diversity without getting upset then this might not be the right thread for ya.

Throughout history Music has been at the forefront of politics, war, and death. Whether we're talking about Battle Hymns, or musicians killed by fanatics (John Lennon, Dimebag Darrell), or the entire Classical Era ala Beethoven:

Politics also assisted in Beethoven’s elevation. The disorder of the Napoleonic Wars, which redrew the map of Europe and ended the Holy Roman Empire, caused many to look toward music as a refuge. Amid universal chaos, Beethoven exuded supreme authority. Moreover, the burgeoning of his reputation, notably in Hoffmann’s 1810 review of the Fifth Symphony, coincided with a movement that the early-twentieth-century theorist Carl Schmitt identified as “political Romanticism”—a pan-German nostalgia for vanished medieval Christendom and mythic national roots. Beethoven, despite his cosmopolitan Enlightenment background, was not immune to such sentiments. Several recent scholarly studies, notably Mathew’s “Political Beethoven” and Stephen Rumph’s 2004 book, “Beethoven After Napoleon,” have scrutinized Beethoven’s shifting alliances in his final years, detecting political implications even in the otherworldly realm of the last string quartets

Speaking of Beethoven...

As far as Pink Floyd goes - I feel like they were best when all members worked together - and Nick Mason never gets any credit for being an amazing drummer either but like John Densmore, Chris Frantz and Ringo Starr he has a much greater understanding of playing for the song.

Both Gilmour and Waters are super talented - and Pink Floyd are one of the original Prog rock outfits that doubled down on listenability instead of going for sheer technique (like Yes, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, ELP, etc.) which I think is important - and in that respect I hold them in the same regard as Genesis (who are slightly less listenable from a mainstream perspective but when they hit it they really hit it). I love prog rock - but all my favourite songs from the bands listed are the ones where they used their considerable talents and focused on songwriting in the vein of pop / rock and less in the realms of orchestral or jazz.

As for Pink Floyd I think that out of there entire catalog they have 4 great albums (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall).

Out of those - Animals is the one I listen to the most because it features both some of the best guitar ever recorded and the vocals are just so bitter sounding - it is much angrier  than anything coming out of the punk scene at the time while remaining completely palatable to mainstream ears.

Of course that is just my thought on them.

I am a huge fan of AC\DC and will for ever regret turning down multiple opportunities to see them live.  Iron maiden also have a special place, however coming into this millennium for a second, I am quite partial to this at the moment.

and this is the best cover of simon & garfunkel Sound of silence I have heard (Dare I say it, I prefer it to the original)

(some good stuff in this thread btw... esp War of the worlds,)

Few of my favorites from 2018 so far (That aren't on the extreme side of things)

I enjoyed Howard era of Killswitch engage and his band Light the Torch (Previously Devil you know) returned to a similar sound. Mostly Clean Vocals. Bit on the simple side but it triggers the nostalgia for me and I dig it.

Mark Tremonti (Creed/Alter Bridge) is a great guitarist with a distinct sound. He's also become a pretty good vocalist, his latest solo band's album is solid.

Progressive/Folk metal. It's mostly clean vocals. I've always loved Amorphis and they have a pretty unique style.

On the heavier side:
Kalmah a long time Melodeath fav of mine. This album isn't their best but it's still Kalmah and still solid.

This album may be my favorite of 2018 so far. It's so well done with so many riffs and changes. Several 12 min epics and they dance between Extreme Black and Melodeath.

And Last but not least is kataklysm. Good meat and potatoes solid Groove/death metal.
