Question

The Official Films Thread

Well bollocks, we've got a telly thread so I thought I'd create one for films too.

I'm currently working my way through Movies With A Twist Collection 3 which I downloaded years ago from TPB. All of those torrents are now dead which is a shame because I didn't get around to downloading Collection 4. I'm downloading all of those separately which is a hassle but will be worth it in the end going by 1-3 so far.

Am in the middle of watching Law Abiding Citizen, I think I've seen it before but i was so long ago I've forgotten what happens.

The problem with watching these films knowing that there's a twist makes it easy to work out what the twist in question is so probably better if you watch them without that knowledge lol

Here's a list of some of my all-time favourite films of all-time in no particular order:

Brazil
The Life Of Brian
The Holy Grail
The Meaning Of Life
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Lifeforce (a terrible film but the female lead vampire spends most of it naked lol)
All Lethal Weapons
All Die Hards
Every Dirty Harry Film
The Jungle Book (the Disney original)
Pi
Falling Down (just for the McDonalds scene lmfao)
Silent Running
Logan's Run
All 60s-70s Planet Of The Apes
Soylent Green

Am going to stop there otherwise this post is going to be HUGE lol

Started too early on Black Friday - but one shop started "Black Days" today - so I just bought these 4K movies for the 85":

    - and I always wanted to see this one in 3D, it might be close to the last 3D movie I'm buying for the plasma - I already have the 4K version:

Now I wonder if I'll buy more movies Friday... Gotta keep the disc makers alive  o:)

You're probably right - it's only 6.1 on IMDB and has $100 mill budget. I primarily bought it because Peter Jackson helped making the movie, and the image quality should be among the very best 4K movies ever - this movie is real 4K (not fake upscaled 4K):

The differences between the 1080p Blu-ray and this native 4K (shot at 8K) 2160p/Dolby Vision-enhanced UHD release are immediately obvious and fairly startling. The UHD appears magnitudes sharper, offering one of the most drastic improvements to overall image clarity and detail over the standard Blu-ray yet, and that's even considering that the Blu-ray is terrific in its own right and was awarded five stars for its image transfer quality. The UHD's image is remarkably efficient, boasting some of the most rawly razor-sharp details the format has yet seen. Intimate character close-ups are superb, revealing a level of definition and detail that is rare even on this format. A slave trader seen at the 52-minute mark is a great example. He wears a coat made of buttons, on each of which are distinct, individual details of wear and tear, some more significant than others. The pores, the hair, the beard, the teeth, the level of clarity at which the character is revealed is undeniably striking. Two close-ups featuring Hester Shaw are of note, too. The first, seen at the 17:44 mark, reveals the UHD's improvements to skin clarity, intimate definition, and overall sharpness of not just skin but individual eyelashes and eyebrows, not to mention the texture on the bandana and the individual strands of hairs on her head. Another example comes at the 43:48 mark where the depth of the character's facial scars and skin blemish clarity are off-the-charts. The shot is also a good point of reference for the Dolby Vision color grading, which can leave some skin tones appearing more pasty in certain scenes but also increasing brightness while adding depth and brilliance to points of color like Hester's blue eyes and red lips.

Color depth overall is much improved, and skin tones, generally, are very healthy and full. There's a significant add to range and nuance across the board. Contrast is boosted quite a bit, almost to the point that the image borders on looking like a cartoon in a couple of places, including Hester's intro scene where the red bandana's color is so deep and the contrasting skin so pasty that despite the obvious add in color depth and textural resolution the character looks almost entirely artificial. Fortunately such extremes are rare. For the most part, the vast increases in both color saturation and textural depth -- even on digital constructs and machinery close-ups that reveal wear and tear with exponentially more detail -- make the image a remarkable UHD specimen. Fang's red attire and and airship and Shrike's green eyes are also amongst the standouts for intensity and luminance, the latter in particular against some darker backdrops. Black level depth and density are also improved over the Blu-ray. Noise is kept to a bare minimum and no other source or encode flaws are apparent. This is a new reference quality UHD release from Universal.

Trailer doesn't look too bad though, and Dolby Atmos may help too... maybe best to enjoy 1-2 glasses of red wine before the movie, lol

Not sure the new Hellboy movie is better  :#  :D But I'm a big fan of Hellboy, might help a bit  o:)

BTW, just saw this one on Netflix - it was surprisingly good - but it's also 7.6 on IMDB, way ahead of the movies I just bought

That looks pretty good, I might have to check that out tomorrow :D

I've just finished watching The Good Neighbour on Netflix starring James Caan and it was great. A couple of kids set up cameras in a grumpy neighbour's house as well as a load of tech to convince him that his house is haunted. I've always liked James Caan since I first saw him in Rollerball in the 70s. Loved that film back in the day!

Rollerball was (and is) great, classic 70's movie.
There was a 2002 remake of it, but I've never seen it. The trailer looks crap.
(Plus I guess Battle Angel Alita's motorball is a modern copy of the Rollerball sport without the social commentary)

I'd love to see a full length movie version of the Justice music video New Lands, which is a great retro futuristic version of Rollerball. Plus Justice is way better than Limp Bizkit who were in the 2002 Rollerball trailer. :)

Might have to rewatch Escape From New York now you have me thinking about it!

I rewatched the 1975 version of Rollerball and it was every bit as good as I remember it.

There are quite a few sci-fi films from the 70s that have aged pretty well.

Might have to rewatch Logan's Run and Silent Running at some point too. I love both of those films.
