Question

The Official Films Thread

Well bollocks, we've got a telly thread so I thought I'd create one for films too.

I'm currently working my way through Movies With A Twist Collection 3 which I downloaded years ago from TPB. All of those torrents are now dead which is a shame because I didn't get around to downloading Collection 4. I'm downloading all of those separately which is a hassle but will be worth it in the end going by 1-3 so far.

Am in the middle of watching Law Abiding Citizen, I think I've seen it before but i was so long ago I've forgotten what happens.

The problem with watching these films knowing that there's a twist makes it easy to work out what the twist in question is so probably better if you watch them without that knowledge lol

Here's a list of some of my all-time favourite films of all-time in no particular order:

Brazil
The Life Of Brian
The Holy Grail
The Meaning Of Life
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Lifeforce (a terrible film but the female lead vampire spends most of it naked lol)
All Lethal Weapons
All Die Hards
Every Dirty Harry Film
The Jungle Book (the Disney original)
Pi
Falling Down (just for the McDonalds scene lmfao)
Silent Running
Logan's Run
All 60s-70s Planet Of The Apes
Soylent Green

Am going to stop there otherwise this post is going to be HUGE lol

Fish, and plankton, and sea greens, and protein from the sea.
    Logan's Run was great.

I haven't seen Silent Running for a LONG time. Another great one is Saturn 3 with Farrah Fawcett, Kirk Douglas and Harvey Keitel, and a very disturbing robot.

Wow, I haven't seen Saturn 3 for DONKEY'S years! Completely forgot about it! I always rewatch Silent Running, Logan's Run, Soylent Green and all of the Planet Of The Apes films every few years. Love those films.

Christmas Day a few years ago I did a Planet Of The Apes marathon, it was awesome! :D

Just saw the new Hellboy (2019) movie - expecting the worst from the many bad ratings I was greatly surprised. It was an awesome movie, but you'll need to be into the more darkish British humor. And I liked the CGI, sure a few scenes could have been better, but overall I was impressed with the Doom-like monster design. The wife thought it was a great movie too. One major change is that Hellboy 2019 is made for the more mature audience, this definitely is not a movie for kids - had to send my 11 year old son away - the violence is quite gruesome in the movie (he had watched the first Hellboy movie which was fine for kids his age). Sound and music were awesome too - Dolby Atmos worked some wonders - and image quality was top-notch in the 4K version, this is true 4K.

"Hellboy is presented on 4K UHD courtesy of Lionsgate Films with a 2160p transfer in 2.40:1. The IMDb lists a couple of Arri Alexa models as having digitally captured the imagery, with everything finished at a 4K DI. This is by and large a very impressive 4K UHD release from Lionsgate, and in fact were not for what I perceived to be a lack of really significant improvement in shadow detail in a few key dark scenes, I probably would have scored this at a 5.0. The uptick in detail is obvious from the first moment of imagery, with the chainmail and festering face of a corpse more precise looking, and with the striking black and white photography (with one notable exception) really offering stunning contrast."

I don't know if it's a 8/10 or 9/10 movie, maybe 8.5 is just about right - or like this review from IMDB:
    9/10
    Don't believe the negative reviews
I almost never write a review for a movie, just rate them and move on, but in this case I just felt compelled due to all the negative reviews. No, this isn't a Guillermo del Toro film, but it is most definitely still worth watching. I wish people would stop being so harsh on reboots. Ron Perlman did great on the original movies, but David Harbour does it even better. The story isn't full of holes as most claim, it's perfectly adequate. Just watch it with a non bias attitude and you're sure to really enjoy it.

I enjoyed Hellboy 2019 a lot more the Avengers: Endgame. I liked the new Hellboy more than the previous Hellboy movies, and I liked the previous Hellboy movies a lot ;)

Also need to see this, 8.5 ln IMDB, so this is - maybe - the best movie this year?

Watched this tonight...was pretty damn good. De Niro and Pacino are 2 of my favourite actors, and Pesci was pretty damn good as well. Didn't even recognize him at first. I'm part Italian, so maybe I'm a little biased though. :p

Interesting if it's what really happened to Hoffa though. I used to be a member of Teamsters Local 40, cooking for the airlines.

Perhaps Nicholas Cage's money problems are now over? He's been in some TERRIBLE films over the last few years because he grabbed ANY work that was offered to him, regardless of whether the script was any good or not, cos he was desperate for the cash.

But I've just watched a film called Kill Chain and it was excellent, well worth a watch.

I'm fully aware of the bad reviews, but maybe that did help. I did not experience any form of realism or deep social existentialism, and my wife (which once was a member of Mensa) thought it was one of the best movies we've seen all year. But we did watch the 4K HDR version on a 85" TV and the Dolby Atmos sound was awesome. I'd probably rate it 8/10 or maybe 9/10 - but I liked John Carter a lot too
Speaking of realism, I'm not sure Mortal Engines is more or less realistic than Star Wars and many seem to dig SW movies. I do too.

The movie was shot in 8K, and the 4K is razor sharp - I could see even the most minor skin imperfections and felt really close to the young female heroine - I don't even remember my wife's skin in more detail, lol

I'm biased by being a great fan of Jackson's work like in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit - and I love the Steampunk vibes. I think this IMDB user review is spot on:

Warning: movie actually contains original content
Here is the deal. This movie is far from perfect. It has some weaker moments in terms of dialogue and stumbles upon a cliche or two. But even those weaker moments aren't outright bad, which already makes it far better than most blockbusters these days. But when it hits that high, it really hits it hard. This is the most pure unadulterated fun I had at cinema since... Well, probably Mad Max. That isn't to say this movie is as close to perfection as Mad Max is.

So why the perfect score? Well, for the first time in my IMDb voting history I'm not trying to be as rational as I can be, but just vote from the heart. And then came here to vote and saw its treated as your usual auto-generated fantasy blockbuster. I loved this movie, enjoyed every second of it. You can tell that there was a lot of work and passion put into making this movie look as cool as it can be. Set design and costumes add up to that unique steampunk look and feel that constantly made me go 'wow' , scene after scene. World buliding and even action at times reminded me of the first Star Wars trilogy. This is old school of filmmaking as it can be these days, and we need more of that. And to top it off, some really solid to great performances all around. I really carred for the main cast, and there wasn't a second where they dropped the ball. That hasn't happened in awhile for something that's completely new. Story can get a bit predictable at times but again, it always keeps you invested. It's solid by any standard.

The whole world is just amazing, original and I really hope they make another one to see more of it. Also : before our show there was the Aquaman trailer (they should call it spoilers at this point) that went on for 5 and half minutes and you get to see most plot points, scenes and a better and more original movie after it.

After getting into 4K HDR movies, I have not used the plasma 3D for like a year. But I did have some suspicion when watching the 4K version of the movie above that something was terribly wrong. There were some pixelated background colors and weird colored shading effects that got me thinking that the 4K version was like 50% of the whole - or like getting only one eye of the 3D version. Now, after seeing the 3D version I'm fully convinced this movie was made for 3D if there ever was one. Gone were the pixelated background effects and the weird colored shadings, now everything blended into a perfect whole - and looked very "comic-like". Seems you get one kind of pixelated effects for one eye, and different similar effects for the other eye - and then your brain mixes it all together and creates a vision beyond the sum of the parts.

I might even say, if you have not seen this movie in 3D you have not really seen this movie - at least not the way the producers originally intended it.

Now I have to get Venom 3D too to see if I missed anything  :#

BTW, it's so incredibly annoying that I can't buy a new 3D tv - to me 3D is way beyond benefits of HDR and/or 4K. Watching 3D on my plasma TV looks  just as sharp and detailed as 4K on the 85", but of course the plasma is smaller. We just watched IMAX International Space Station today - my 7 year old son stood up and tried to catch some objects floating in the air. You simply don't get that in 4K or HDR or whatever - losing 3D is close to a worst case scenario for future TVs, sigh, who really cares about 8K...

Just got this one - and we watched it this evening - easily one of the best Spidey movies I've seen (IMDB 7.6):

Maybe not the sharpest 4K ever, but it was great and HDR really made this movie shine - and the boys ages 11 and 15 enjoyed it a lot. Do remember to watch the post-credit scene ;)

    - and suddenly I'm even more happy for a book I got last year - maybe I should have waited for 9.8, but this one is pedigree (Oakland), cover is perfectly centered and the book has fresh white pages...
