Question

The Official Films Thread

Well bollocks, we've got a telly thread so I thought I'd create one for films too.

I'm currently working my way through Movies With A Twist Collection 3 which I downloaded years ago from TPB. All of those torrents are now dead which is a shame because I didn't get around to downloading Collection 4. I'm downloading all of those separately which is a hassle but will be worth it in the end going by 1-3 so far.

Am in the middle of watching Law Abiding Citizen, I think I've seen it before but i was so long ago I've forgotten what happens.

The problem with watching these films knowing that there's a twist makes it easy to work out what the twist in question is so probably better if you watch them without that knowledge lol

Here's a list of some of my all-time favourite films of all-time in no particular order:

Brazil
The Life Of Brian
The Holy Grail
The Meaning Of Life
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Lifeforce (a terrible film but the female lead vampire spends most of it naked lol)
All Lethal Weapons
All Die Hards
Every Dirty Harry Film
The Jungle Book (the Disney original)
Pi
Falling Down (just for the McDonalds scene lmfao)
Silent Running
Logan's Run
All 60s-70s Planet Of The Apes
Soylent Green

Am going to stop there otherwise this post is going to be HUGE lol

I only saw the first two Resident Evil films I think. I really enjoyed them, I keep on meaning to watch them all but I haven't got around to it yet.

Nice, we're going to watch it tonight - but I don't go unprepared B) Btw, this wine really impressed me - it's not that expensive, but rated 4.3 - 4.4 on Vivino with more than 1,500 votes - thus it's among the top 1% of red wines in the world (according to Vivino, but this time I believe them) - it's really amazing (14.5% alcohol, primitivo = similar to zinfandel) - so if the movie fails to impress me, at least I can enjoy the wine :D

Just finished watching this one with my 8 yo son:

    https://youtu.be/uBw6EvIxIS8

Didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprised. 3D effects weren't many, but it did provide some depth - but you easily get depth from upscaling to 4K res too. Some snowflakes did leave the screen, but there weren't many pop-out effects. The story is also about religion - or more precisely belief systems - and that added a lot of perspectives for adults that may/will go unnoticed for kids. Might even rate this movie 8/10 - maybe subtract one if you don't see the 3D version...

Although 10/10 might be slightly much, these users reviews from IMDB are pretty spot on:

I've long said I wouldn't re-buy movies I already own just to get that silly 4k res - but every man has a breaking point

    So got this ...

This one took 2 months to arrive, but just got it. Saw Psycho first, really enjoyed it on the 85" 100Hz, even if it's a black & white movie. 1000 Hz MotionFlow did make the movie come alive - surely quite a lot more lifelike than in any theater in the 1960s, lol.

I saw the new Uncut version (restored in 4K) - not really sure what was added after watching the movie, but here it is 😉

I re-bought Dune, because I made the mistake of buying the 3 hour extended edition, which was so badly done that David Lynch had his name removed as director (replaced with Alan Smithee).

I love the 1984 Dune, but the extended edition ruined it. It added back in cut scenes without the special fx (like the fremen didn't have blue glowing eyes in the restored scenes) and put in narration to try to explain the plot.

I watched a pretty good Korean scifi movie on Netflix the other day: Space Sweepers.

Not the best scifi, but visually it's great and I really like the ship and set designs.

The only real downside is that for most of the movie the main character was unlikeable, I couldn't sympathise with his emotional backstory. But the other crew are cool, especially Bubs the robot.

It's given me an urge to get back into Elite Dangerous or X4

Did watch Space Sweepers a few weeks ago, but stopped halfway through. It's not bad, effects are good - and fun with all the different languages. Anyone noticed that the police officer in the green suit talked Danish? 😉

Plan to watch the rest later - but this one just arrived on blu-ray disc:

Just finished watching the movie - quite thought-provoking with the many striking similarities to the current Covid-19 situation, although the movie depicts scenarios following an even worse and more deadly disease. Really feels like government leaders all over the world saw this movie and thought "hey - that's what we'll do", lol. I guess we're just following protocols to reduce contamination, which were already established when they made the movie in 2011.

    It's a highly recommended movie - 8/10!

I haven't seen Contagion. But I'm a fan of the 1971 The Andromeda Strain.

It's a lot slower and less exciting than the trailer makes it appear, but I like the scientific side of it all.

Today I watched Skylines. It's the third movie in the Skyline series (Skyline, Beyond Skyline, Skylines).

Skyline was interesting. Aliens come to earth to harvest humanity by shining a blue light at us that makes us get sucked up into their ship. A small group of survivors try to escape their apartment complex without being caught.

It had some interesting designs (organic machines, etc), but the concept was a bit stupid. I still liked it though.

Beyond Skyline... I honestly can't remember a single thing about this movie, except they went to a ruined temple at one point. I think.

Skylines has humans and aliens working together to stop a disease that causes the aliens to regress to their crazed murdering state.

Skylines was ok. Not great, but I wasn't bored. It's always great to see Yayan Ruhian, the martial artist from The Raid 1&2, The Force Awakens, John Wick 3, etc, kicking ass.

It reminds me of the second Independence Day a bit.

Stan (australian streaming service) just added Guns Akimbo, so I gave it a watch.

It's an over the top violent comedy. Daniel Radcliffe is a games programmer who is kidnapped, has guns bolted to his hands and is forced to take part in an internet broadcast death match.

    An enjoyable bloodbath.

Sadly it cost $15million to make but took in a world gross of only $1million. Hopefully DVD sales and streaming help.
