Question

The Official Films Thread

Well bollocks, we've got a telly thread so I thought I'd create one for films too.

I'm currently working my way through Movies With A Twist Collection 3 which I downloaded years ago from TPB. All of those torrents are now dead which is a shame because I didn't get around to downloading Collection 4. I'm downloading all of those separately which is a hassle but will be worth it in the end going by 1-3 so far.

Am in the middle of watching Law Abiding Citizen, I think I've seen it before but i was so long ago I've forgotten what happens.

The problem with watching these films knowing that there's a twist makes it easy to work out what the twist in question is so probably better if you watch them without that knowledge lol

Here's a list of some of my all-time favourite films of all-time in no particular order:

Brazil
The Life Of Brian
The Holy Grail
The Meaning Of Life
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Lifeforce (a terrible film but the female lead vampire spends most of it naked lol)
All Lethal Weapons
All Die Hards
Every Dirty Harry Film
The Jungle Book (the Disney original)
Pi
Falling Down (just for the McDonalds scene lmfao)
Silent Running
Logan's Run
All 60s-70s Planet Of The Apes
Soylent Green

Am going to stop there otherwise this post is going to be HUGE lol

Gotta help the shop owners in these difficult times - and I still buy the discs, it's the only way to get the best quality - Netflix does not even provide 4K res for nearly all movies over here (at least all the movies they have not funded themselves), and their 4K signal is far from being similar quality as the discs. So I keep buying the discs o:) - the quality feels even better than the cinema due to perfect sharpness and HDR.

    Just got these:

It's the original from 1981, but I've never seen it in such quality before. Still have the old Ducth version on VHS somewhere (had to get the Dutch version, because it was completely uncensored). It's 7.5 on IMDB.

Then saw this one - never heard of it before - but it's a massive 7.7 on IMDB and a thriller:

Finally, had to accept getting another low-res movie, but it's not available on 4k discs - actually it's the movie I'm looking forward to watch the most:

    It's 7.6 on IMDB.

watched Ghostbusters 2016 last night. (I had to see it before watching the one i REALLY want to watch hopefully later this year)

I went in with zero expectation as most of my mates told me is was a bad film..... which I am glad about, i would have been v dissapointed to have seen this back in the day at the cinema.

Positives........... the 3D was good in it, and the special effects were good.
I did like that the original cast had cameos in it (apart from Rick
Moranis unless i just missed him, but then he gave up acting for 20+ years so that is no surprise.......). I wish they had done more with them however.

I guess it would have been bad taste to have put Harold Ramais in as a ghost.

But for positives for me ........ that is about it.

I will say my wife enjoyed it more than I did, I am not sure i laughed once in the whole film where as she found some of it funny.

i just thought the script was weak (when there was one and was not improved - badly), the 1 liners felt forced... the BS
technobable was pretty much the same as the 1st film but it just came
across like the actors didn't know what the hell they were spouting which
means it was all just unconvincing.
The role reversal of the woman perving at the useless male secretary was cringing......   I get it, men sexist/racist pigs etc etc etc  but it was out of character for the female (who was otherwise decent enough) and the original Ghostbusters film  wasnt like that at all unless i am really miss remembering it..... other than an awful accent there was nothing inept or stupid about the receptionist in the original was there?    I dont think that was the film to make that statement on. The carry on films were a long time ago now, but that was the level of mysogony i think they were trying to riff off.

having grown up with Ghostbusters and really enjoying it, i thought it
was a disservice to the original, it was a cheap knockoff which had no
    need to be made.

I suppose if the original didnt exist it would have been a forgettable but unoffensive film on its own, but the original does exist.    4/10 really dont bother.

edit... some fruity language however this sums it up better than i can (I should have listened to this before posting my thoughts! :) )

    - but no, I use a Sony 4K 85" to watch 4K movies. Not going to download 75+ GB movies ;) You can use your hmd to create a virtual theater though - and it works awesomely.

Hey now.  I loved ALL of the GB movies.  If a movie can make you laugh....then it is a good movie regardless of what others think or say.  I give GB 2016 a 7/10.

I have recently started watching Babylon 5 again due to the passing of Mira Furlan. ( Delenn )  What an excellent show.

Btw, we've just finished watching all 6 Resident Evil movies, and when considering these movies like episodes 1 to 6 of a season 1, they are quite impressive compared to any other zombie tv shows. Maybe even better than the Walking Dead tv show, but that show also has many boring (filler) episodes trying to simply stretch the story. You don't get that (much) with Resident Evil. Also movie 6 The Final Chapter was awesome, even when including several instances of the fuzzy logic that often occurs in these movies, lol. If you want realistic or just slightly believable movies, or close, then do not watch the Resident Evil movies ;) Also all actors constantly have perfect hair and white teeth, the movies easily feel like a very long Colgate commercial - and as a viewer you'll have not to be bothered by many such issues. These movies are not made for thinking persons, but a great visual experience including tons of mayhem in awesome 4K quality. Sound was awesome too.

Furthermore, in my book the movies get another star for fitting perfectly into these Covid-19 times - this especially puts movie 6 into a great perspective. Movie 6 explains most things and covers many loose ends in the first 5 movies.

My verdicts - 4K HDR editions with Dolby Atmos sound (watched on a Sony 85" 4K 100Hz TV with 1000 Hz MotionFlow enabled - much better image quality than in the cinema, although the screen of course is bigger in theaters):

    Movie 1: 5/10.
    Movie 2: 6/10.
    Movie 3: 4/10.
    Movie 4: 8/10.
    Movie 5: 6/10.
    Movie 6: 8/10.

I guess movies 3 and 5 can be skipped. Still not sure if movie 5 was garbage or great kitsch art (it did include some Aliens-Newt copy-story and more stuff that may have been copied from other movies, like a true copy of Lord of the Rings, Battle of Helm's Deep etc).

When watching all 6 movies over 3 continuous weekends, the movies make more sense, and the whole is indeed more than the sum of its parts. I'd probably rate the whole 7 or 8 out of 10, ok let's say 8 then due to the Covid-19 analogy that the producers could not have foreseen, but sometimes you get lucky ;)

Don't tell my colleagues I liked the show

BTW I know the Ghostbusters chat was so last week, however just a heads up if you want to relive some youth.... The real Ghostbusters cartoon has just been released on YouTube free to watch.
Currently showing it to my 5 year old. Still working out if it's appropriate.
