Question

The Official Films Thread

Well bollocks, we've got a telly thread so I thought I'd create one for films too.

I'm currently working my way through Movies With A Twist Collection 3 which I downloaded years ago from TPB. All of those torrents are now dead which is a shame because I didn't get around to downloading Collection 4. I'm downloading all of those separately which is a hassle but will be worth it in the end going by 1-3 so far.

Am in the middle of watching Law Abiding Citizen, I think I've seen it before but i was so long ago I've forgotten what happens.

The problem with watching these films knowing that there's a twist makes it easy to work out what the twist in question is so probably better if you watch them without that knowledge lol

Here's a list of some of my all-time favourite films of all-time in no particular order:

Brazil
The Life Of Brian
The Holy Grail
The Meaning Of Life
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Lifeforce (a terrible film but the female lead vampire spends most of it naked lol)
All Lethal Weapons
All Die Hards
Every Dirty Harry Film
The Jungle Book (the Disney original)
Pi
Falling Down (just for the McDonalds scene lmfao)
Silent Running
Logan's Run
All 60s-70s Planet Of The Apes
Soylent Green

Am going to stop there otherwise this post is going to be HUGE lol

Picked up some movies from the bargain bin for the summer holidays - my 14 year old son wanted to see Silence of the lambs, and also the Conjuring movies, so that's why I got those (and Peter Rabbit 2 for my 10 year old son):

I really only want to watch The Father and Kapernaum, lol - ok, The Last Dual maybe too.

Then my local movie pusher reduced The Godfather Premium 4K/UHD edition from $200 to $120 - and I could not help myself 😇

I thought it was just 3 4K movies - so kinda shocking to see this giant package arriving, Toy Story blu-ray just to show size:

    - and inside:

I guess this will be the unintended Birthday present I bought to myself this year, lol.

Btw, this limited edition 4K steel-book also just arrived:

Probably gonna see the Strange movie later tonight...

Doc Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was actually not bad, I might rated it 8/10, on IMDB it's 7/10. I liked it better than the latest Spidey movie. Most importantly the movie showed that Fox has now been assimilated by Disney/Marvel - we saw the first glimpse of Fantastic Four and X-Men - and that was truly awesome.

I did see the 4K version on a Sony 85" 100 Hz tv - and the 4K version was really awesome, very sharp and colors did pop - one of the best 4K movies I've seen - so I might add 1 star for the image quality. HDR looked great too, nice black levels.

Still need to watch some of my movies bought for the summer holiday - not sure I'm gonna make it with one day left, lol.

Capernaum was great though - it's 8.4 on IMDB:

    - but it's a serious movie, no spaceships or Marvel heroes here 😉

The Last Duel was great too - made by Ridley Scott, and it shows - it's 7.4 on IMDB:

The 4K and HDR qualities are great with the movie - I'd probably rate it 8/10.

I've only found two films supporting 4K in 60 fps - both by Ang Lee. The first is Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk - and the other is the movie I just bought and saw:

Quoting the review on Blu-ray.com of the 4K 60 fps version, the image quality is exceptionally high - and worth watching alone (and I fully agree, the movie isn't bad either, I'd probably rate it 6.5/10 - the sound is awesome too):

"The purity of the picture quality itself never falters. The image appears consistently crisp and ultra sharp, picking up levels of clarity and detail well beyond the Blu-ray's capabilities, whether considering the resolution or the frame rate. World details are striking, everywhere to be sure but particularly in chapter seven during Henry's first clash with Junior. The textural efficiency and clarity around the city, both within the buildings as they battle on foot and minutes later as they zoom through the streets on motorcycle, proves as visually complex as the scene is intense. One can practically feel the environment, experience the flow of battle firsthand. The textural might carries through the entire film. There's not a wanting texture in the movie. Detail is crazy high for the duration, picking up everything from core facial qualities to minuscule dust and scuffs on cars or tables. Dolby Vision Colors are fantastically bright and true, with high intensity yield and true tonal temperature. Colors pop as they should and blend as they must. Skin tones are perfect and black levels are pure. For absolute picture quality few, if any, are better. It would have been interesting to compare the image at 2160p/Dolby Vision at 24 frames per second with this one (as well as view the film at high frame rate 3-D) but this one's worth owning for the experience alone."

Interestingly, I had a hard time telling these real 60 fps apart from the computer generated frames using the 1000 Hz MotionFlow in my Sony 85" 100/120 Hz tv. Gemini Man really looked just like any other 24 fps movie running through MotionFlow. Now, I can't find described exactly how 1000 Hz MotionFlow works, but Sony uses 10 (9 computer generated) images to match 240 Hz MotionFlow - so 10 x 24 fps = 240:

Now I wonder if 1000 Hz MotionFlow means making of about 40 computer-generated images per second? (40 x 24 fps = 960 frames, and adding the original 24 fps gives a total of 984 fps). Of course the TV cannot show all these frames, a TV with 240 Hz MotionFlow typically is 60 Hz, but those 240 frames may translate to 60 very sharp and non-blurry frames per second. For 1000/1200 Hz MotionFlow these TVs use 100/120 Hz - and show 100/120 images per second.

I've seen many TVs, and nothing has impressed me more than Sony's MotionFlow - it simply looks natural and real, not too much, not too litte - does not at all look like any "soap opera" effect, lol. I'd never buy any modern tv not able to remove the horrible judder and blur from a 24 fps movie.

My point with all this is - after watching Gemini Man in 4K 60 fps - that Sony's Motion Flow is so incredibly advanced that you cannot tell the end result apart from using real 60 fps. That was kinda mind-blowing.

So no need to shoot movies in real 60 fps - your tv can fix all 24 fps just perfectly.

I may have mentioned it before - my son and I saw a movie in the local theater, and then he said: "Why is the movie stuttering so much - I'm feeling motion sick" - that was the 24 fps, lol.

Btw - also just bought these on disc, haven't seen the movies yet:

Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of the highest ranking movies of 2022 on IMDB - with an average rating on 8.1 (only beaten by Top Gun: Maverick at 8.3). Over here that movie is only released on blu-ray (1080p), but my blu-ray-player has a QDeo processor capable of cleaning up and advanced upscaling to 4K - and the the Sony X1 processor in the TV cleans up the image again. The end result is so close to real 4K quality that my wife and guests can't tell the difference, lol. So I'm ok with blu-ray discs too - sort of... 🙂

Japanese and Korean dramas have a lot of differences. https://doramasmp4.stream/ Japanese dramas are usually about love and romance, while Korean dramas often involve a lot of action and suspense. Japanese dramas are also more realistic than Korean dramas. Another difference between Japanese and Korean dramas is that Japanese dramas often involve supernatural elements such as ghosts and demons, while Korean dramas do not usually have these types of elements in them. Korean Dramas are the most popular genre of Korean entertainment.

I realized I never really cared for anything on Netflix. The "N" logo worked more like a warning to avoid watching certain films and movies. So got Disney+ instead - and my 14 year old son and I just watched:

I expected nothing, but was impressed. It's an awesome movie. My son said it was so scary he had to look down and study the carpet on the floor several times 😅

Checking out the movie some more - this is hardcore stuff, and had I known, not sure my son got to watch it:

I liked Ghostbusters Afterlife. It has some flaws, but I enjoyed it.

I'm sure that many people have seen some of my favorite movies since they're extremely popular but will mention two of my all-time favorites. Those two are Forrest Gump and Schindler's List, great movies.

Some lesser-known movies I would recommend giving a watch would are Greener Grass and Mr. Nobody. The plot is kinda all over the place for both, there's a plot behind the movies but it's very obscure and minimal, you're just in for the ride.

I also hate to admit it but I recently took the plunge into watching the Twilight series and it isn't that bad, if anyone was putting off watching it because of the fan base or the poor acting, please watch it. The story is pretty entertaining and you can just make fun of the ridiculous things as you watch, it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be!
In the time of your life, live - so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it. P.S., I can beat you at One Piece TCG and Tekken
