Question

The Official Films Thread

Well bollocks, we've got a telly thread so I thought I'd create one for films too.

I'm currently working my way through Movies With A Twist Collection 3 which I downloaded years ago from TPB. All of those torrents are now dead which is a shame because I didn't get around to downloading Collection 4. I'm downloading all of those separately which is a hassle but will be worth it in the end going by 1-3 so far.

Am in the middle of watching Law Abiding Citizen, I think I've seen it before but i was so long ago I've forgotten what happens.

The problem with watching these films knowing that there's a twist makes it easy to work out what the twist in question is so probably better if you watch them without that knowledge lol

Here's a list of some of my all-time favourite films of all-time in no particular order:

Brazil
The Life Of Brian
The Holy Grail
The Meaning Of Life
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Lifeforce (a terrible film but the female lead vampire spends most of it naked lol)
All Lethal Weapons
All Die Hards
Every Dirty Harry Film
The Jungle Book (the Disney original)
Pi
Falling Down (just for the McDonalds scene lmfao)
Silent Running
Logan's Run
All 60s-70s Planet Of The Apes
Soylent Green

Am going to stop there otherwise this post is going to be HUGE lol

My 15 year old son wanted to see some horror movies - and we've seen:

It's quite hardcore, so do beware - but a surprisingly great movie. Might even be better than The Silence of the Lambs these days 😉

The wife didn't exactly appreciate me showing the kid such a movie - so after Fresh we did make a slight change of genre 😇 - and have also just seen ðŸ˜Ž

Fresh was a fantastic movie, so much better than I expected!

In the time of your life, live - so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it. P.S., I can beat you at One Piece TCG and Tekken

Agreed, also I'm quite fond of Barbarian too (Disney+) - also ended catching up on Don't Breathe 1 & 2, where I did like the first one best:

Was thinking that Barbarian got some inspiration from Don't Breathe, especially the neighborhood...

My wife and I finally saw Etarnals last night - I've postponed it for long due to bad reviews, but it was better than I expected, definitely a 7/10 to me - but watching the 4K version on a 85" 100 Hz TV wearing high-end wireless surround sound headphones may be quite different from  watching the movie on your phone...

Also watched The Banshees of Inisherin, which is quite a different movie than Eternals, lol - but a much better one - starring Colon Farrell:

    I'd rate the movie 8/10.

Now, watching Eternals and Banshees of Inisherin needs to be done in the proper order, because Barry Keoghan plays in both. He plays a young man with learning difficulties (mild mental retardation) in Banshees of Inisherin and having seen him like that, I struggled seeing him in Eternals, lol.

So see the Eternals first, the go for the Banshees 😉

I just picked up a 65" OLED 4k 120htz TV so this thread excites me ðŸ˜Ž

I also thought Eternals was better than what a lot of people were saying about it. Idk, it was a nice change of pace than your typical one-person superhero origin story.

Barry Keoghan is one of my favorite actors when I see him on screen. If you like a good weird "arthouse" type movie, check out The Killing of a Sacred Deer. He is really good in it and he plays alongside Colin Ferrell again!

I did see The Killing of a Sacred Deer some years ago, did of course remember Farrell, but not Keoghan. Maybe time to see it again, even if I have to be in the mood for that, lol 🙂

Btw, expecting the worst, I got this 4K steelbook for $15 in the bargain bin - I thought I could find it on Disney+, but apparently Sony has the rights to Morbius, it's not on Disney+ nor Netflix. I know the ratings are very low, but watching it using the Sony 85" with ultra-sharp 4K and great colors (and love the motion compensation too, I do not like stuttering 24p) - often I think I can add another point or two to the IMDB rating, lol:

Furthermore, the IMDB rating does not reflect other qualities of movies - and this movie has excellent ratings for 4K image quality and sound:

"The gains to sharpness and clarity are unmistakable, particularly in character close-ups where skin intricacies are visible beyond the Blu-ray's reach, which is impressive because such content looks terrific on the Blu-ray as it is. But the gains serve to amplify the picture's excellence and bring to it a very qualified cinematic look and feel. Even the visual effects enjoy superior clarity and visibility, even as fast as they often move around the screen. The 2160p resolution still holds some source noise, but it never feels intrusive. There are no obvious encode issues to report, either [...] On the UHD format, Morbius earns a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. There is certainly a fullness and precision here that is unmistakable from the outset. The sense of immersive musical space and terrific clarity are in evidence from the very first note."

I'll have a glass or two of red wine to slightly sedate my frontal lobes before watching this movie, and at least I hope to be in for a treat for the visuals and the audio. I do love most Marvel movies too, so that bias may help me appreciate the movie more than others - maybe - I hope ðŸ¤ž ðŸ˜…

Btw, just saw this short 52m "movie" on Disney+ - it's 7.2 on IMDB, and it does have some qualities. Actually I watched it using the PSVR2 oled screen, did feel quite cinematic with the giant screen (can only get Disney+ to work with PSVR2, I get a black screen in all apps I try with Rift CV1 or Index):

I haven't watched Morbius yet just because of all the memes and jokes that came out of it lol. But I don't think it was a terrible movie, just not the best movie... Might be worth watching on a lazy Saturday or Sunday night! I just reserved my tickets to Guardians of the Galaxy 3 which I think will be really good. The Guardian movies are some of my favorite in the Marvel Universe.

I watched Furies the other day. A pretty cool Vietnamese action movie. A group of abused women go on a revenge killing spree against a local crime gang.

The bike chase scene looked very fake (cg/green screen), but the fight scenes were cool.

Now I need to see Furie, a movie about a mother trying to save her kidnapped daughter. The lead actress of Furie, Veronica Ngo, is the writer/director/costar of Furies. Some people have said Furies is a prequel to Furie, but the characters are unconnected.

Not Vietnamese, but from South Korea - my 15 year old son and I just watched Old Boy - it's IMDB 8.4:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBNBpNcuQHI

It's been close to 15 years since I watched the movie, my memories weren't that good. There're some sexual scenes, and the movie may not exactly be first-choice when trying to have a good time with your teenage kids, lol. So a bad choice by me - but he still liked the movie - well, to some degree ðŸ˜… I'd say Old Boy more is an 18+ movie.

Yeah, Oldboy isn't exactly a kids film. 🙂

One of my former coworkers said her father took her to a cinema to see A Clockwork Orange. She was 8.

I haven't seen the remake of Oldboy. I didn't hear good things about it.

I watched Furie. Another good Vietnamese martial arts action film.

I was wrong above (I trusted a review online), there is a slight connection between the two films. While Veronica doesn't play the same character in both, the main character in Furies is mentioned by name (but never seen) in Furie. So a shared universe, but unconnected stories.

Three new Star Wars movies have been announced.

    - Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is making one set 15 years after Rise of Skywalker, Rey makes a new Jedi order.

    - Dave Filoni is making one that wraps up the storyline of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.

    - James Mangold is making one about the founding of the Jedi order.

Since the Jedi order was founded 25000 years before A New Hope, that's going to be interesting. Then again, things progress very slowly in Star Wars. KOTOR was set 4000 years ago and the tech wasn't that different to recent movies.

I have a weakness for sci-fi movies - and while I tried to fight it due to IMDB 5.1 rating, I finally gave in ðŸ™„

The movie was both worse and better than I'd hoped for. Worse if you think this movie is just slightly realistic - but better if you compare to some Marvel (fantasy) movies, where literally anything can happen. Moonfall is pure fantasy - and if you accept these terms, then everything gets better.

I loved watching disaster movies with my parents as a kid - and I saw Moonfall with my 11-year-old son. He got tears in his eyes when one dad sacrificed his life for his kid - and my son would not want me to do that, very touching. So while we adults may find many flaws in this movie, it may work much better as a family movie. My wife liked the movie - same did my son.

The movie has a  $150 mill budget and it does show. The 4K (disc version) quality is amazing too for both sound and image, it got top-ratings from Blu-ray.com (5/5 for both image and sound):

    https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Moonfall-4K-Blu-ray/310953/

It's probably a 6.5 movie to me (thanks to 4K image quality and sound) - sedate your frontal lobes with some red wine or beers, and it's easily 7/10 😉

I didn't watch any trailers before watching, I was totally unprepared for where this fantasy movie was going - so maybe better watching some trailers first? ðŸ¤”

I liked this user review from IMDB:
