Question

The Official TV Thread

Just thought I'd start a thread where we can all share what we've all been watching.

I'm just finishing the fifth and final series of The Gentle Touch starring the lovely Jill Gascoigne as DI Maggie Forbes. It's a programme from the 80s and is excellent.

Next up for me is the second series of Monkey, known as Monkey Magic in the States I think. If you haven't seen it then you HAVE to check it out. It's a Japanese programme from the 80s that tells the legend of Monkey, Piggsy, Sandy and Tripitaka who travel through Asia to pick up the Buddhist Sacred Scrolls. Some may be familiar of the legend from the video game Enslaved: Odyssey Of The West.

I love rewatching stuff from the 70s and 80s regularly, they don't make telly like that any more which is a real shame. All we seem to see these days is mostly reality TV bollocks with the odd gem hidden here and there. :(

So what are you guys and girls watching?

Have been rewatching Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes that have recently appeared on Netflix. Love these two series, the music in particular is awesome. Am surprised that they didn't do a third one set in the early 90s.

Just seen that Absentia has had another two series since I watched the first series years ago!

It's got the hornbat from Castle in it as the lead character. ?❤?

Just started rewatching the first episode. ?

I started on War Of The Worlds.

It's pretty good so far (I've seen 3 episodes).
I hope they ramp up the aliens though, now that they've been revealed, they are no longer scary, since their design is too similar to, umm, something I won't spoil. But it's something I'm a fan of. But I know people who would be terrified of them. There had better be more types.

    I watched Warrior Nun.
It's got some ok parts. For a show about a girl with angelic based super powers destined to fight demons, there's not much fighting demons with super powers, more wanting to party or run away. It's basically Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but where too much of the first season is the main character just wanting to party with her new boyfriend.

Van Helsing was far better. I really enjoyed that show.

Just got this one from Amazon.co.uk, and we watched the first 2 episodes today - awesome stuff, and more bloody than I anticipated. It's nearly 8/10 on IMDB:

Watching 2k on the 4k 85" tv kinda feels like watching dvd quality, lol - but I could not find the series anywhere on 4K discs, sadly.

Yup, I saw that a while back and really enjoyed it. There was also a film years ago too I think, but it was a pile of old pants if I'm remembering correctly.

My 13 year old son and I have just begun watching the classic Sherlock Holmes show with Jeremy Brett - still second to none, 8.7 on IMDB - highly recommended, although 41 episodes do take much time to watch, lol.

Interesting, I haven't seen that one.

I'm not a fan of modern Sherlock. A more classic (serious) version could interest me though.

To me Jeremy Brett is the only true Sherlock, might be a good idea to watch the first season The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and see what you think.

I found a playlist of 39 episodes on youtube. Just watched ep 1.

Very cool. Jeremy definitely nails it as Holmes.

Quality is good too, I'm watching it on my 65" 4K OLED and it looks fine for a 37 year old tv series on youtube.

Clark Kent level of disguise here.

Holmes' disguises were much better, I didn't even realise the first one was him.

Lol - agreed,  Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein (Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein and hereditary King of Bohemia) didn't exactly choose a great way to disguise himself!

I do like the language also - and how they behave as true gentlemen - many persons could learn a lot here, or is it just me getting too old

Kind of makes sense I'd like this version, I also enjoy the Father Brown series (the newer one with Mark Williams). Another english detective series set in the past (but not as far back) with a gentleman lead. 🙂

If you haven't seen it, give HBomberguy's "Sherlock is Garbage" essay a watch. It's about how the recent series fails compared to the older interpretations.

I like to think the reason Holmes didn't give an explanation of how he deduced the guy's identity (as I was expecting) was because the disguise was just so crap it was obvious to him.

I've finished the first season of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I'm about to start on season 2 once my ubereats arrives.

I like how there's the subtle (and not quite subtle) hints of Holmes' problems, the ocassional brief glimpse of a syringe, seeing his hand shaking and he consciously tries to control it while on a stake out, his place messed up, his irritation and anger sometimes getting out. None of it played for laughs like the RDJ movies.

I'm just annoyed he didn't get into a fight with the mad doctor strong man who threatened him. The way that ended wasn't how I expected.

My son kinda lost interest - or needed a break, we'll be back 😇

Also have not used Netflix for long - any tips for great detective shows would be highly appreciated. Did like that FBI show a lot - but it's soon long ago... Sigh ...

I'm half way through season 3.

Usually I'm not a detective show fan. But I do have the 4 season box set of The Professionals.
