Question

The Official TV Thread

Just thought I'd start a thread where we can all share what we've all been watching.

I'm just finishing the fifth and final series of The Gentle Touch starring the lovely Jill Gascoigne as DI Maggie Forbes. It's a programme from the 80s and is excellent.

Next up for me is the second series of Monkey, known as Monkey Magic in the States I think. If you haven't seen it then you HAVE to check it out. It's a Japanese programme from the 80s that tells the legend of Monkey, Piggsy, Sandy and Tripitaka who travel through Asia to pick up the Buddhist Sacred Scrolls. Some may be familiar of the legend from the video game Enslaved: Odyssey Of The West.

I love rewatching stuff from the 70s and 80s regularly, they don't make telly like that any more which is a real shame. All we seem to see these days is mostly reality TV bollocks with the odd gem hidden here and there. :(

So what are you guys and girls watching?

I just finished the second episode of Sweet Home, the Netflix series based on a Korean Webtoon (online manga host).

It's about the tenants of a run down apartment building trying to survive a monster apocalypse.

It's really good so far. Cool monster designs. It's not just another zombie movie, every monster is different. Lots of blood, violence, tentacles, decapitations, etc.

    There's 10 episodes, each around 55min.

I've also become addicted to the anime series So I'm a Spider, So What?

A high school girl dies and is reincarnated as a spider in a fantasy world that works like an RPG. But as a gamer, she takes advantage of the system and levels up like crazy.

    The fight scenes are awesome.

    I finished Sweet Home.

Really great show. It looks great. It doesn't feel like a live action manga remake (which it is).

It's also pretty depressing, this is one of those "don't get attached, you'll regret it" shows.

It also ends on a cliff hanger, so hopefully there's a season 2.

Just make sure you don't get Sweet Home and Chi's Sweet Home mixed up. One is korean horror, the other is the anime my kitten avatar is from. 🙂

Both good shows, just be careful which one you show your kids.

    Hello everyone!

I'm currently watching the Breaking Bad series once again! I can tell you it's still very good!

But I'm in a lazy phase right now, because here in Germany the restrictions because of the pandemic are still very tough. I can't even go to the gym and be active. That's why I'm trying to adjust my eating behaviour to stay fit in these days. If you also lost your motivation for sports and want to improve your nutrition I can recommend you this article , that helped me a lot. It's in German but you can easily translate it with a translating tool.

I also love to watch the documentaries on Netflix regarding the planet and our consumer behaviour that damages our world. I can reccomend Seaspiracy and Cowspiracy. That will also help you to overthink your eating behaviour. 😄

Here you go that's all for today!

    Regards

Hi Mousepad33.  I used to live in Dortmund and can now read and write fluently in German after 11 years there. Im now back in the UK and have just finished watching the German series "Four Blocks" about Turkish gangsters. A really exciting series. I just hope they bring out a fifth series on Netflix.

I have to get back to Love Death & Robots. I think I still had 1 or 2 segments left but NetFlix started timing out every attempt to watch anything for a couple of days. I didn't get around to coming back.

Also Castlevania season 4 is out. I'm not a fan of the games, but the tv series is awesome.

I see that Netflix is also doing a reboot of He-Man.

I really enjoyed the She-Ra reboot. I never liked He-Man or She-Ra when I was young (even as a kid the whole thing seemed stupid and why couldn't anybody tell Prince Adam was He-Man? He just took his shirt off! Worse disguise than superman). So the changes made to She-Ra didn't bother me (so many people raged though). But the series was a very interesting take. Plus Scorpia was awesome!

The He-Man one looks more traditional. It's being made by Kevin Smith and Mark Hamill is voicing Zenbane Skeletor.

    LMFAO!

I'm very excited to start watching the new He-Man series. Makes me wish I had kept my old toy collection. I may have a picture of the figures somewhere, before I sold them on E-Bay many moons ago.

    In other news,

I started watching that Handmaid's Tale series. It's crazy and addicting!

I'm also watching Gangs of London on AMC. I absolutely love that show. Has a strong Jon Wick vs Snatch sorta feel.

I've never owned anything from MOTU, but I still have all of my Star Wars toys (in storage boxes, not filling shelves around me like a youtuber).

So Castlevania is now over, the 4th season was the last. But apparently they are making a spinoff series in the same world, with different main characters. No further info on it yet though.

I've been watching Trese. It's a 6 part Filipino animated series set in Manila. It's about a (Alexandra Trese), a witch/warrior who enforces order between humans and the supernatural.

Maybe he's a bit young, but my 13-year-old son did see all episodes of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul - and True Detective, so why not continue some great parenting with a new show 😇 - thus right now we're watching:

So far it's good - not as great as Mindhunter - also Real Detective collects cases from all over the US, so new actors for each episode. Still a higly recommeded show if you're into such ... stuff 🙂

I watched Masters of the Universe.

While I like Mark Hamill as a voice actor, I'm too used to the Alan Oppenheimer voice. Not that I watched much of it, it's just such an iconic voice.

The odd thing comparing this to the She-ra reboot is that it hits the uncanny valley of design. This one has gone for a more realistic look, but they kept the toy designs for things like vehicles and monsters, which just look laughable. She-ra's more cartoony look makes everything look more consistent.

Looking at the IMDB page, I just noticed that Tri Klops (one of the villain designs that looks goofy with this art style) is voiced by Henry Rollins! I'm a huge fan of Henry, not his music (which most know him for) but his spoken word tours.

Why does Man At Arms wear a furry loincloth over the top of his pants?

I looovvee the first episode of Masters of the Universe omg! Just watched it a few moments ago.

I actually enjoy their approach to character and world drawing/visual, as it very much reminds me of one of my favorite Anime of all time, Fist of the North Star.

I like how they took a page out of the original 1980's Transformers movie,

    Spoiler
In Transformers, the audience is gripped with the first "true death" of an iconic character, Ironhide. In this reboot of MotU, the same happens when we see the sudden true death of Mossman.

Much as I mentioned over in the Books Thread, since I have watched so many films/shows and read so many books over the decades, I feel as if I tend to know where any "new story" is going to end up. This is no different, as I feel that I know where MotU is headed. However, it is being executed so well with the nostalgia (considering my own background with Anime, MotU, GI Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, Silverhawks, etc), that I think I will very much enjoy the ride.

I am curious to see how well this is received among the Film Critics community.

Episode 2 of MotU was great as well. Although I can't help but notice another "borrow" from Transformers; as they essentially made Triclops to Skeletor as Starscream is to Megatron. Still a fun story!
