Question

Virtual Oculus Lounge

Is anybody interested in hanging out in an Oculus Rift Virtual Lounge?
I've been kicking the idea around.

It is incredibly easy to just hop in and create rooms using something like the unity bootcamp photon networking demo
but I was wondering what would make this special enough for folks to actually use to interact and hang out together
in a virtual space.

For the demo I'm talking about, reference

Me too. However, sometimes withholding funds is the 'tough love' a project needs.
I know that once the avatars are ironed out this will be huge.

Multi user interactive Rift environment... Real time voice chat... (Nice avatar...) What's not to love?

Hi! I plan on doing a custom avatar system where you can design your own in-game or upload a 3d-scanned version that looks exactly like you.

The reason the avatars have no bodies is that I focused primarily on sending head and handtracking in mass quantity through a server, so that all players can recieve the head and hand tracking.
It would have been easier to just add standard avatars, but I agree that the floating heads and hands are not ideal.

Some of the reason for this is that altho you can approximate elbow position and such based on where the hands are relative to your head - It is actually pretty hard to do well. The elbows will bend in weird ways when you move your hands in awkward positions etc.

I might do a body with the head attached, but still no arms to the hands. Thats really the hardest part.
There are lots of things to improve and fix tho, and thats why I had to get some more funding.

I understand if you dont want to back this based on the lack of bodies, but I want to assure everyone that if you do back it you will have a really cool avatar system.

This Sunday I will be making an update on my own take on 3d scanners that can scan humans; a 40 DSLR camera rigg with triggersystem that scans by Photogrammetry. It gives really high detail 3d-models, but they need work to be game ready.

Aha! I was wondering how those two projects might tie together. Thanks for sharing that connection with us. Less unanswered questions (even unasked ones) is always a good thing.

Here is the photgrammetry thread, for anybody interested in more details:

It looks neat but the 50,000$ goal will be hard to reach... you'll need approx 1/3 of all rift owners backing this project!

Sven you might be right! But its what I need. Counting on some higher rewards being purchased from companies or rich people looking to get some advertising.

In any case, this is what I need to finish virtuaview and get the ball rolling for the virtual lounge building with all the features I planned. If I fail , I can keep some of it and try to scavange together a product as well as I possibly can!

My previous post was a bit harsh for your project when the clock is ticking.
It is good to hear your upgrade plans though... I'm in!

Does indiegogo let us upgrade to the next tier, paying only the difference in price, like kickstarter allows?

There was a link in the MTBS3D thread that it is up to the operator (you) to keep track of any allowed upgrades and refunds, and to let the backer then contribute the difference as a separate contribution, and then you must substitute the upgraded perk. You can also provide refunds if you choose. Such things are allowed, but not automated, so you would need to keep track of and manually process any exceptions such as a tier upgrade. If you decide to allow tier upgrades, you can mention that at indiegogo (and in your threads) and say how to contact you before making a second donation for the difference amount.
