Question

VR isn’t dead. It was just taking a nap

For those that had been questioning why things had been quiet on the VR forum front of late, here is a really good overview from a VR developer on what they see is happening.

Note - For transparency, I write a column for a news service (VRFocus) that is funded by nDreams, but am impartial to their position, and only report what I feel comfortable covering.

You still seem confused as to what a monitor vs screen is.

VR headsets have lenses. The confusion is all on your side of the table.

Facebook is currently leading PCVR and VR in general, and will likely continue to do so based on all present day facts.

i think it is wrong to say its an either / or thing.

I love that some games have VR options, ie elite dangerous, assetto corsa, pcars, redout, the list goes on............. (and i believe payday 2 has vr now?)

but imo it is bat shit crazy talk (no offence meant) to suggest that funding titles like technolust, edge of nowhere, luckys tale, lone echo, echo arena is some how a BAD thing that is hurting VR....

I too am excited to see games like fallout 4 come to vr, but imo its not the best example you could have cited because that IS sold as a new game and not something which comes with fallout4. (i wish it was) indeed because its not a new game i begrudge paying top dollar for it to be honest. I think they are being pretty money grubbing charging what they are, and NOT including all the DLC for what is, what you correctly say is, just a vr port of a 2D game.

(now doom on the other hand i am ok with..... its £10 - £15 so not too expensive and it IS actually a title which is more than just adding VR to an existing game).

all of that said, VR is never going to replace 2D gaming for everyone and imo no one should expect it too... but suggesting you think it needs to die is pretty defeatest imo.  Go back to 2D for a bit, its no biggie, i myself play the odd game of uncharted on my TV..... but VR is just another string in my gaming entertainment bow, just like my flightstick or my wheel.

PS i think you have been looking at too much throw away junk on steam TBH.  there is plenty of really decent stuff out there - on steam too but there is a higher percentage of it on oculus home - which offers way more than 4 hrs for your money.

even edge of nowhere - which is often called a very short game - took me over 5 hrs to get through.... 5 hrs of zero padding 100% high quality gaming, and it cost me about 11 quid..... £2.20 an hr  and like i said that was all grade A gaming. plenty of value there imo.

and games like elite and Assetto Corsa have 1000s of hrs in there potentially... and i have not even started on IL2 yet.

on top of that we have the modding community, hopefully they will continue to add quality VR to some older 2D titles as well   we have Doom 3 already but another poster on these forums is about to release a mod for NOLF, and then there is motherVR, which I hope does not stall.

and fingers crossed HL2 VR is still coming...... tho whether its before or after HL3, who knows ;)

My issue is not lack of VR content, its lack of time to play the stuff i already have.  i have a dozen or so games i have not even loaded yet, some bough 6 months back.
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR :)

To use the crystal ball at this juncture, it would seem that the high-end PC route to VR adoption is not going to find the hoped level of traction in the foreseeable future (till 2020). In the remaining period, the mobileVR scene seems also to be losing momentum, and we now wait to see if the Standalone / WinMR approach can find traction.

The failure to achieve promised goals by the VR PC scene, following the kickstarter, can be laid at the feet of the following issues (but not exclusively):

    - expensive initial adoption pricing
    - limited number of AAA or recognisable killer apps
    - confused message regarding open-source
    - confused message regarding room-scale
    - confused message about storefront(s)
    - protective practices from key developers
    - poor marketing with overt use of hyperbole

Obviously, the console market is not mentioned in this commentary - what seems to have happened this is that Sony took the gamble of entering the VR scene, while the XBone team stayed outside (for whatever political reasoning), reverting their entry into the VR scene to their Windows MR operation separate of a console solution.

The question will have to be, can the VR scene be reignited with the appearance of the Standalone (SC) style platforms. Can AAA developers be encouraged to enter the fray - or will we be dependent on independently developed strong content to help cement the next phased adoption of VR into the mainstream?

There is another option however - right now a independent developer could create a VR game experience that reignites the interest in the tech (the killer game app) and then forces a re-adoption of interest in supporting PC based (high-end) VR. Content that could not be achieved on a Standalone... there is always another possibility!

Nope, HTC is struggling - which is the HMD you chose. Also, the CV1 has not been out for a full year yet. A year is 12 months, check your Math.

Oculus is selling the Rift just fine, and already powers over 1-million Gear VR units. Oculus Go and Santa Cruz will only bolster Facebook's current success, while HTC focuses on China and Pimax backers keep their heads in the clouds.

There is no struggle, there's just the bitterness some people have over Faebook's success in VR.

Ok so when are we going to see Oculus invest 200million on a single VR game? Next year? 2019? 2030? My guess is never because they’ll need to sell 5million copies. If 10% of the available market buys it the total market would have to have 50million compatible HMD’s. Oculus are struggling selling 1million after 2 years of CV1.

I’m sorry to disagree with you mike but you will be playing games like technolust for a very long time if you want a dedicated VR market.

So are on the right track and I hope PCVR follows suit. You’ll be following Oculus into VR MobileVR Hell while the rest of the industry wise up.

Hey it's all good not much point in  discussion if it's just an echo chamber of agreement. I will not be following oculus anywhere however if they go all in on mobile vr instead of PC. I will always respect what PL, Oculus and Facebook have done for VR to get us to this point however and to my NOT expert eye is seems to be oculus driving innovation like ATW and ASW with the others playing catch up . I respect Oculus but it does not make me loyal to them. Right now tho they make the best product for my needs. Next year? Who knows :)

VR is here to stay and there's a simple reason why. Because it can only get better in time. Better resolutions, better ways of tracking..etc. Tack the Black & White TV for example, look how far televisions have come since then. In-fact look how far PC gaming has come when everyone was writing it off years ago. VR isn't like it was years ago, it's more affordable now and looks visually stunning when done right and that can only get better as devs work it out.

Oculus Go is just a rival to Samsung’s GearVR

It is not a rival at all, and as you have been informed of multiple times... Oculus encourages developers to build applications that target Samsung's GearVR because Oculus Go will piggy-back off of it.

Oculus Go and GearVR are rivals in your own mind; no facts are going to change that obviously. But in reality... for those not living in a bubble... these are not rival products.

The rest of your post is more of you trying to predict the future badly (for the eleventy thousandth time); which you haven't done very well since you predicted that the Vive would succeed but it ended up failing and forcing HTC to sell to Google.

If you can't understand how Go and GearVR are "not rivals" then you aren't going to understand the complexities coming out of the rest of the VR Industry.

You can continue waiting for Pimax to save you where the Vive failed, but you were talking this way when you first heard of Vavle's Knuckles. And how did that turn out?
    :D

My favorite thing about Atmos VR predictions is that they always turn out against you (e.g. you insulted the Oculus Remote and now HTC's new stand-alone headset will use a remote).

The whole VR Industry is following Facebook's lead, because Facebook did it right from Day 1. Your resistance is not only futile, but also shows how effective Facebook has been in dominating the VR Industry.

And to be clear: Facebook is not responsible for trying to segregate the VR Industry... angry rival posters like yourself cause the greatest fragmentation of all.

The same can be said for 3DTV which had full industry support and mass appeal. Nothings set in stone. If VR is treated as niche it may never be anything more, not in our generation anyway.

Wrong. 3D has always been an entertainment factor and in no way had any ability to change society. VR changes the medical, military, and education fields in ways that move society and science forward: Outside the realm of entertainment.

All 3D accomplishes is doing something cool for a little while.

VR is not treated as a niche by Facebook and Microsoft. However, VR is most certainly treated as a niche by: HTC, Sony PlayStation, and Pimax. You have always supported the organizations that force VR into a niche while condemning the biggest company who takes VR out of a niche... all while arguing that VR shouldn't be a niche.

    That's just special.

Zenbane did you even watch the OC4 Carmack talk?

I did, and when I listen to someone speak I don't just focus on the parts that give me ammunition in my own personal crusade.

GearVR is powered by Oculus, that is a partnership... not a rivalry. You want to believe it is a rivalry so you ignore the fact that GearVR is powered by Oculus, you ignore the fact that Carmack said that developers need to keep building for GearVR, you ignore the fact that GO piggybacks off of the same apps as GearVR, and instead you watch an interview by Carmack waiting to see if you can hear something that you believe proves you right.

Partnerships can exist among Competitors. There is no big evil conspiracy happening hear.

Facebook works with Samsung and Microsoft as Partners despite the fact that they are Competitors.
