Question

Why do people not want to show their faces with a profile photo?

Hi everyone,

Just wondered why majority of people here don't want to show their faces to communicate.
Why is this?

Just because someone posts a picture of a real person doesn't mean that they are that person.

A "catfish" is someone pretending to be someone they are not on the internet. A catfish usually targets a victim or has someone they are pretending for. Usually people intend catfishing as a romance scam on dating websites or seeking online relationships. People use fake profile pictures, names, and often genders. Catfishers create fake profiles to trick people into thinking they are someone else. Usually the fabricated life displayed is the one they wish was their own, making it easy to act as if it is really them.

    Dear Zenbane,

Thank you for the catfish explanation.  Clearly you are educated as I had no idea what catfish was. Thanks for that clarity but I have qualms over the photo I used.  Its mine and you can tell it's mine.

Well, "out there" maybe, but not on the Oculus forums - we're all Skeletor on here.

Interesting fact: Alan Oppenheimer (the voice of Skeletor) also voiced Cringer.

You crazy crazy fool. Skeletor did the voice of Skeletor and Cringer did the voice of Cringer. Two very separate creatures. You'll be telling us that Heman never did the voice of Heman next! These were REAL people, not fictional characters.

Just like the cake, the credits were a lie. Just imagine how many nightmares kids would have had in the 80s if they knew that the show was entirely non-fiction. It was more of a documentary in cartoon form. If you want proof then just look at those adverts.

    Bloody idiot. :o :D :p :D :o

Most people choose not to show themselves because they think it might affect how they are perceived and that their opinion or voice might not matter based on what they look like.

A lot of people don't reveal what they look like in fear of bullying, being called ugly or giving someone leverage in an argument, that's not obviously for everyone, some just like being an alternate persona etc ..

This is also a double-edged sword, with anonymity comes a sense of power, I see countless examples of when faceless people pick or prey on people who have chosen to show themselves. I always think you have no right to judge someone unless you allow yourself to be judged.

Also a small note, this feels more like an "off-topic" thread and I will move it to that section.
