Question

Would a bigger television get me back into Pancake gaming?

I really like VR, but the lack of AAA games is making me feel I also need to get back into pancake gaming. I currently have a 42" television and I'm just wondering if I get a 55" or 65" television, if this will get me more immersed in a game like VR does? Since VR came along I've struggled to get back into 2D gaming and there's some really good pancake games that will never come to VR.

So do you think a lager screen would get me more immersed in a game or not?

^^^I have not enjoyed any of these Doom games since Doom 3, that thing is just loaded with atmosphere, and i do have the rebooted Doom from 2016 in both 2d and in VR but i never really got into it on either as it seems nothing more than  just running around shooting, and i have this new version on the xbox game pass but again i played 20 mins and it seemed just like the 2016 version.

We really need a doom 3 sequal with another decent story and similar intemse atmosphere that makes RE7 look like a summers day at the beach. lol

I'm still playing through Doom Eternal. At first, I was blown away. Over time it did start to feel like a chore. But I think that was only because it is a pancake game and I was still caught up in my "VR or nothing" mentality. Right now, I'm going through my VR Hiatus, where I take a few months away from VR.

Going back to my pancake library, I found myself falling in love with Doom Eternal. So much so that I'm replaying all the missions in order to take my time and find all the secrets. It really is a fantastic game with a good story, fun cinematics, and a highly addicting soundtrack.

Overall, I'm spending a lot of time with FPS pancake games this holiday season. I'm nearing the end of the first Half-Life game, and I was enjoying it so much that I went back to finish Doom Eternal lol

Right now the only VR Game that has my interest is Myst on Quest!

Doom Eternal did get many truly awesome reviews - hard to get such these days without proper substance. If any pancake is going to win back my faith in these games, Doom Eternal has to be the one!  B)

Yeah @RuneSR2 - if you can manage to get yourself in the mindset where you sit back and enjoy Doom Eternal, instead of making the mistake I made where I was trying to rush through it, then you start to see why it is rated so high. I spent time honing my skills to where I'm using my additional abilities much more often, and far more strategically.

I'm a huge fan of the Freeze Grenade, and I love setting enemies on fire in order to gain extra armor mid-combat. I'm also becoming a pro at Sniping enemies right in the heat of battle.

The game does a great job of placing environmental structures that aid you during intense fights. From boosting stations that shoot you across the sky, to poles that let you swing across multiple sections of the map.

But of course, the only way to truly enjoy and appreciate how much love and attention was given to this game's combat sequences is to take the time to acquire that old-school "FPS Muscle Memory."

This game would be ridiculously addictive in VR.

Maybe I should get back to Eternal later tonight.

Btw, the new Diablo 2 remake also does look interesting:

    - and maybe I'll buy the new Crash Bandicoot 4 for the kids - arriving in a few weeks for Win10 (Blizzard Store):

Lastly, Metro 2033 is free on Steam for the next few days - that game was very demanding in 2010, but should fly using current hardware, lol:

I think I have my old D2 files still on my WinXP machine. I plan to load it up and check soon, since I read that the new D2 will actually work atop the original save files. Pretty amazing if that works out!

I think VR is very dependant on the content, at least for me. a 27 inch 4k monitor at 144hz > VR, in my opinion, for a competitive first shooter-- I think is better. Games like league of legends or casual games like Loop Hero.

I think VR is really only good when the content is made or modded to be played in VR. IE, not Virtual desktop or playing a desktop experience in VR.

But take MSFS2020, VR is really fun-- Racing Sims, VR-- Elite Dangerous, VR; but, watching a movie-- I'd rather watch that on my 4k TV. Multitasking, Id rather do that on my Monitor. Competitive games, Monitor.

VR has its use for me-- but it's not a Desktop replacement for all content.

I've picked up a few flatscreen games lately... I never realized that Prime gives away games to members. but I just grabbed a free code for Battlefield 1. I saw it on sale for a few bucks on Steam, and while I was considering whether it was worth checking out, I saw a review that mentioned it being free this week from Prime. Next week they're giving away Battlefield V.

I'm not interested in the multiplayer aspect, but I usually pick up this sort of game for dirt cheap a few years after release and just play the single player campaign (or a few hours of it, until I get bored or distracted).

I also picked up Far Cry 5 during the Steam summer sale a few weeks ago. Not bad for $13.

I picked up It Takes Two - fun coop for the kids this summer.

Currently with a Metascore of 88 this is the 4th highest-rated pancake in 2021. Takes up 50GB, and can only be played in coop - thus no singleplayer is possible

Also got Death Stranding, awesome graphics on the plasma tv with DLSS:

Graphics are truly awesome - I think I read PS4 is limited to 30 fps, but no problems getting solid 60 fps with every setting maxed out using the PC version

Not sure I've seen better models (npcs) in other games - Death Stranding is indeed impressive - but surely Olivia in Lone Echo is nice too 😉

    - and got Lego Builder's Journey - fun game for the kids and shows off RTX ray-tracing in a great way.

Got Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition due to RTX - and same reason for getting Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Can't help thinking that Metro Exodus with all the gestures and hand movements looks like a game that should have been done in VR...

Also got the high-rated title A Short Hike, which my 9 year old son greatly enjoyed.

Note that graphics can be set to be completely sharp and not pixelated. This is one of the highest-rated controller-friendly games on Steam (actually the second best according to users ratings)

My 2 sons have played It Takes Two for many hours, and I played Death Stranding until level 4 I think, then sort of lost interest, but might try it more later.

Kinda lost interest in Metro Exodus in the first level due to boring gamepad controls - and RTX effects didn't catch my eye. Similar for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but Lara really looked good 🙂

Tried Cyberpunk 2077, it was pretty, but the gameplay felt too cumbersome with the Steam controller and I wasn't captivated by the story. I didn't feel immersed - and refunded.

Death Stranding did impress me though, also it has some Half-Life associated content.

Doom Eternal with RTX did not impress me, can hardly see any difference. Tried Disco Elysiym, but didn't like getting killed and my save game wiped for asking the wrong questions to a npc - so the game forced me to a full restart after 1 hour of slow gameplay, I refunded that game. Got Tekken 7, but I didn't think the content was much better than my good ol' Street Fighter 4 - and didn't like wasting 70GB drive space for Tekken 7, even if the game was only like $7, refunded that game too.

In short, this summer Death Stranding with DLSS did impress me, maybe also to some degree Lego Builder's Journey for the ray-traced and relaxing content, but not much else - when it comes to pancakes.

Btw, also got Battlefield 1 some years ago, still have that 80GB game installed. Only did a few levels and then lost interest - but surely I would have loved that game if the game supported VR 😉

Yeah, I picked up Metro Exodus too, as well as Wolfenstein: Youngblood, for a few bucks each, but I’m saving them until I have an RTX card. I’m also interested in Cyberpunk 2077, but again, waiting until I can upgrade (and maybe it’ll be cheaper by then).

You should get yourself a wireless keyboard and mouse for your couch gaming. I had my PC in the living room for years (when I had the house to myself before I got married), and I still have a secondary PC hooked up to the TV (although I haven’t used it in a few years now). I have a lap board that I keep tucked under the couch that’s just big enough for the keyboard and mouse pad, because I don’t think I could play most of my games very well with a controller.

I bought a Steam controller years ago, but never used it for much. I was a little annoyed that they changed the design at the last minute and went away from their commitment to a fully ambidextrous layout in favour of a left-only joystick and right-only face buttons. That righty-centric layout is one of the reasons I dislike gamepads, although I guess it made compatibility easier for games that have built-in gamepad support. It just seemed like so much work to wrestle the controls of each game into something playable for me, and in the end I still preferred mouse and keyboard, so it ended up gathering dust.

I think Steam Input has come a long way since then, and I've gotten familiar with it through tweaking several VR games, so I'd probably have an easier time now setting up lefty controls on the controller (although I still don't have much of a use-case for it).

I guess if I get a Steam Deck, I'll be spending a lot more time fiddling with Steam Input and using touch pads for mouse emulation. Hopefully in that case, the extra buttons on the back of the Deck will make it easier to create good lefty configurations.

I picked up The Ascent over the weekend, and have been really enjoying it. Twin-stick shooters are not my typical cup of tea, but this cyberpunk world is absolutely gorgeous, and the gameplay is quite engaging. It also supports same-screen co-op, so I've been playing it with my daughter, and she's been loving it too. I've seen a lot of complaints online about performance, but I'm getting a solid 60 fps at 1440p and Ultra settings on my GTX 1080.

This game looks great with or without RTX. I watched some on/off comparison videos, and the difference is fairly subtle. I’m sure I’ll play it again when I’ve got a 30 series card, but in the meantime, I’m having a blast.

It is an action-heavy game, without a lot of inventory fussing. You do pick up a fair bit of loot, but you mostly just sell it en masse when you get back to a hub area, or use it to upgrade your weapons. The levels are massive, with a lot of hidden nooks and crannies to explore if your want to track down all the loot chests marked on the map. I’m 12 hours in now, and I just want to play more. This game has sucked me in more than any other has in quite a while.
