According to the article from the link below ( thank you, O. 🙂), it doesn't work with new Meta accounts, only with old Oculus accounts which were migrated to a Meta account.

I think I have one buried in a box somewhere too. However Meta is not supporting the Gear VR and it's a Samsung device, not a Quest headset so you're writing to the wrong place.  This forum is exclusively for Meta headsets.

Samsung have likely disabled it at this stage but you should search online for ways to get the Gear VR to work.

Good luck.  My advice, buy a Quest!

Hi oliik2010 🙂

Asking Google   "how to use samsung gear vr without oculus app"

gives me this:

Because official Oculus/Meta servers for the Gear VR have been discontinued, you can bypass the Oculus app by enabling the built-in Gear VR Developer Mode. This allows you to launch sideloaded apps directly from your phone and use the headset without needing to log in. [1, 2]

Step 1: Enable Gear VR Developer Mode

  1. Open the Settings menu on your Samsung phone.
  2. Navigate to Apps (or Applications) and select Gear VR Service.
  3. Tap Storage, then Manage Storage.
  4. Tap the VR Service Version text repeatedly (about 6 to 8 times) until a hidden Developer Mode menu appears.
  5. Toggle the Developer Mode switch to the ON position.
  6. Check the box for "Add icon to app list".

Step 2: Use the Headset

Once enabled, a new app called Gear VR Service will appear in your regular phone app drawer.

  1. Open the Gear VR Service app on your phone.
  2. Select any compatible VR application or 360-degree media player you have installed.
  3. Place the phone into your Gear VR headset. It will run your chosen application in VR without triggering the mandatory Oculus login or setup wizard.

Step 3: (Optional) Using Google Cardboard Apps

If you want to use the Gear VR hardware for standard Google Cardboard VR apps, you can use third-party tools to disable the Oculus auto-launch feature.

  1. Download a remapper tool like Cardboard Enabler for Gear VR from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open the app and toggle the mode to Cardboard.
  3. This tricks your Samsung phone into treating the Gear VR like a standard Cardboard viewer, allowing you to use open-source VR apps.
