Question

I spent 5+ hours trying to fix the horrible Quest 2 UI

I am officially losing my mind with what Meta has done to the Quest 2.

I bought my Quest 2 back in 2023 when it was at its peak. Back then (around the v55-v57 era), the system was amazing. It was fast, well-optimized, and a joy to use. Today, Meta has completely ruined it. The current interface is absolute garbage. The system pointer and that blinding white laser beam are absurdly huge. It scales horribly on the screen and causes massive eye strain after just 20 minutes of basic navigation. Back in the golden era, it was just a tiny, elegant, comfortable dot.

I spent my entire afternoon and evening (more than 5 hours straight) acting like an advanced Android developer just to get rid of this giant cursor. I fired up my PC, ran countless ADB commands, used SetEdit to modify system tables, and even extracted an old v47 `VrShell.apk` to see if I could force the old scaling back.

But Meta has locked down everything. `SecurityException: Permission Denial` on system tables, strict signature checks, and an OS so bloated that the Snapdragon XR2 chip constantly stutters and lags just to open the settings menu. They abandoned the Quest 2 to force a heavy Quest 3 experience on hardware that cannot handle it.

To make matters even worse, I tried using the community workaround to access the legacy Virtual Environment menu through the official 'Help and Tutorials' app. But Meta patched that too! Now, when you click the button that is supposed to take you to the environment selection, it just forces you back to the main Settings home screen. They are actively spending time blocking workarounds instead of fixing the UI.

The most frustrating part is that I know the solution is a firmware downgrade, but I am not going to do it manually because I refuse to risk bricking a device that cost me a lot of money (2,000 BRL is not cheap!). Why does the community have to risk destroying their headsets just to get basic visual comfort and performance back?

Meta needs to officially release a legacy firmware version or a 'Classic Mode' toggle for the Quest 2. Let us downgrade officially to the 2023 golden era software if we want to. Stop choking our devices with features meant for the Quest 3.

To top it all off, when I finally decided to click on the official community forum to post this feedback, the server returns an 'Internal Server Error'. Even the 'Return to home' button loops into the same error.

Please, stop ruining the Quest 2. Give us an official way to downgrade to the software we actually paid for.

The system pointer and that blinding white laser beam are absurdly huge.

That's a "you" problem. You can literally turn the laser pointer aiming line off in the headset "accessibility>vision" settings. Your post was like watching someone dismantle their entire kitchen because they couldn't find the "on" switch for the toaster. 🤪.

Also, this is a community forum, no Meta staff here. We're here to troubleshoot and are not interested in pointless whining.

Maybe you spent 5 hours of your time on the wrong things.🤪

I imagine if you had done a bit of research, you would have found this.

If you don't like the new UI of Meta, you can easily change it back to the old one. Thanks to QGO.

This is exactly what I've been thinking. What is the downgrade that has the risk of bricking? I'm really willing to try, im done with this menu

You might be done with it, but it's not done with you! 😂  Sorry, couldn't resist the joke!

Seriously though, you could try it, if you can find the method and if you don't mind taking the risk go for it. Chances are it will be OK if you follow every process to the letter.  You've got nothing to lose, except your headset of course. Good luck! 🤞🤞🤞🤞🍀

That’s exactly right. It’s absolute garbage. After years of issues, the link finally worked properly for a while, but then—following the latest forced updates (which really ought to be illegal)—everything broke: not just the connection to the PC, but the headset itself. If I definitely decide to buy a new headset, it certainly won’t be from Meta. I’m sick of paying for junk and being treated like a guinea pig, even without having opted to test beta versions.
