It's proven the Quest Pro can do full face tracking. Why not give it to us?
Quest Pro face tracking hardware is more capable than the Face Tracking API we can access.
Notmaster6 recently published Qpro-Enhanced-FT, which is open source on GitHub. It runs on Quest Pro hardware and adds two features the official API does not provide:
- Eye convergence and divergence: independent per-eye gaze rays, so eyes can visibly cross or diverge. The tracker already resolves this internally; the API hands back gaze data that flattens it out.
- Tongue tracking: tongue position derived from the two lower-face cameras via a stereo model.
To be clear about what's being asked: we do not want raw camera access. Everyone here knows why Meta will not ship that, and privacy is a legitimate reason to say no. The request is for the same kind of data the current Face Tracking API already provides - derived, abstracted tracking data - only with the channels that are currently withheld:
- Tongue blendshapes as additional Face Tracking API channels.
- Per-eye gaze rays instead of a combined result, for apps that request them.
Social VR is the reason most of us paid Quest Pro prices in the first place. Expression fidelity is the product for this headset. Quest Pro is discontinued, which means this is a finite, invested userbase asking for more value from hardware we already own - not a feature request that would cost Meta a hardware revision.
So the question for anyone from Meta reading this is whether there is a technical or policy blocker to exposing these channels, or whether it has simply never been prioritized for a discontinued device. A straight answer either way would be genuinely appreciated, even if the answer is no.
There are thousands of active Quest Pro users in social VR, and goodwill is cheap here, this is a low-cost way for Meta to show it hasn't written off the people who bought its most expensive headset.
