Hey everyone! I went ahead and flagged this with our internal team, so they will be continuing to work on/look into this topic.

With that being said, the best option I can really recommend at the moment would be to submit bug reports wherever you run into this so that our engineers can get more back-end information.

Bug report natively.

Bug report on PCVR.

Thank you everyone!

Just chiming in with the same issue v68, notably in darker scenes

I second this. Darker scenes seem to trigger these artifacts. Do you have a certain app where you've noticed this the most?

I have this issue. Happens to me in certain apps, like movie streaming. Or recently, with ALVR. Maybe it is related to Quest's hardware video decoder?

PS: I'm on the latest v67.

Is there any way to downclock the CPU or something, to test if this will fix it?

Hey everyone ðŸ‘‹

I can see this rainbow artifacting is still affecting you long after when I'd hope there'd be a fix for it. What I'll do is I'll collect some details from anyone still having this issue to forward onto the engineers so they can re-evaluate the issue ðŸ›

We are on v69 now so just make sure that your Quest is updated before forwarding on your details. Also make sure your PC meets the Quest Link requirements. If so, please confirm:

  • A short summary of the specific rainbow artifact issues your facing:
  • Quest Model:
  • Software Version Meta Quest Mobile App:
  • Software Version Meta Quest Headset:
  • Runtime Version
  • Any troubleshooting completed:

When I have enough replies with your deets then I'll forward it onto the tech overlords who can look into it a bit closer ðŸ‘€

Amazing thanks.

A short summary of the specific rainbow artifact issues your facing: I get flashes of white pixels when streaming media using 4XVR. The devs of that app have outright told me "it's a problem affecting all quest 3 CPUs".

Quest Model:Quest 3

Software Version Meta Quest Mobile App:287.3.0.30.109

Software Version Meta Quest Headset:71.0.0.278.522.650679316 (I signed up to PTC yesterday. Previous to this I had the most recent prod release. Same problems exist on both versions.)

Runtime Version: 71.0.0.285.529.650679117

Any troubleshooting completed:
Updated 4XVR, removed and reinstalled 4XVR, tried reducing refresh rate etc.
Done factory reset on Quest 3
Updated Quest to latest official release and also tried PTC release.
Have raised bugs via the headset menu.

Thanks for providing those details ðŸ™‚ This really helps!

When I have a few more sets of details from others in the thread then I will forward this onto the engineers to have a look ðŸ‘€

Come to think of it, this issue isn't specific to PC VR per se. This issue can occur when watching movies via some standalone video player in very high resolution (like 1080p 3D movies). So maybe Meta shouldn't totally ignore this. I can understand PC VR doesn't bring any money to Meta since they are selling the hardware at a loss and app store commission is where revenue is. But since this affects video player apps which are arguably some of the most compelling use cases for these headsets for mainstream users - maybe it should not be at the bottom of issue priority list.

Thank you for responding with those details, KaiaKiuti ðŸ™‚

I have forwarded yours and Ki80's details to the tech team ðŸ›

If anyone else in the thread can weigh in and provide their details then that'd be greatly helpful ðŸ™‚ I will update you guys as and when I get an update ðŸ«¡

I can corroborate that this issue seems to occur when the encoder is under a lot load. It is nearly reproducible for me if I cast to computer through the website. Suddenly I will get terrible screen tearing and white artifacting. This is without Quest Link.

I am having the same issue for the last year. Kept RMA'ing my headset until my warranty was expired. Every refurbished headset I received all exhibited that occasional random pixel flicker issue.

  • A short summary of the specific rainbow artifact issues your facing:

In some frames, I would see random white-ish pixels spread across the screen at various intervals. Sometimes once every 10-15 minutes. Other time once every 30 seconds.

  • Quest Model: Quest 3 512GB
  • Software Version Meta Quest Mobile App: 287.3.0.33.109
  • Software Version Meta Quest Headset: V69
  • Runtime Version

Not sure what that is.

  • Any troubleshooting completed/or workarounds:

Tried rebooting. Tried factory resets. Nothing worked.

Hey there, MeanUITread ðŸ‘‹

Thanks for providing those details. This really helps!

Would you be able to provide the full version number on the headset? This would help the engineers as there are multiple different version of v69. An example would be 69.0.0.576.352.641228209 ðŸ™‚

The runtime version would be shown under the headset software version in your system setting on the headset. Would you be able to provide this too? ðŸ™‚

How is still still a problem? And support is still asking for software versions? What a joke. I returned mine a year ago over this issue and I thought about buying another one now, but I guess I won't. I know it's a software bug because it was fine the first 2 weeks I owned the headset about a year ago. Embarrassing.

Hey guys - chiming in to also say that I've been facing this issue for over a year now. It's indeed embarrassing that this is still a problem. It's insane they've been so complacent in not fixing this - despite the fact it affects new Quest 3's and Pros, as well as Q2 users like myself.

I made a post on Reddit, showing the other posts on this thread, but of course people immediately brushed it off. Doesn't shock me. I'll continue to push to get this fixed via other outlets.

Here's a recording. (click to view), which I literally took about a year ago at this point - it remains an issue, just as obnoxious as it is in that video. Need photos? Here's some I just took yesterday:

These were visible in Virtual Desktop (the dev's stated that this has been an issue since v53 - Meta's had an entire year and 19 software updates to take care of this issue). Can confirm I've seen these in multiple standalone games as well. It's 100% tied to GPU usage. Meta has overclocked this far beyond stable clocks.

I will continue to pursue this until Meta gets this taken care of.

We've all exercised so much patience and we are getting blue-balled with constant claims of "oh we'll look into it" just to never hear back or see any progress. I apologize if this comes across as harsh, but get it together. This shouldn't be an issue present on brand new $500 devices.

I've of course contacted support - they provided an OOW 64GB Quest 2 headset for $150. Guess how much those cost on eBay! $44.

I've been a customer of Meta for years now - starting with the CV1. Then the Rift S, which - surprise - exhibited a hardware failure on me less than a year after purchase. Support ran me around the ring to get it replaced. Then Q2 after that, which was fine during warranty - and now here we are. This'll be the last time I will ever purchase anything from Meta, doubt they care though.

Truly hoping this gets fixed for everyone affected.

LordArceusNathanSudo

Apologies for the ping - but it's clear this issue isn't actually a priority. We appreciate your cooperation in getting this fixed, our headsets have been borked for a year at this point.

I already know I'm going to be asked this - even though it's already been asked a billion times - so here you go:

  • A short summary of the specific rainbow artifact issues your facing: Flashing, strobing pixels that consume a large portion of my vision. Originally started happening near the left side of my vision, now happens near the right. Likely due to too many GPU overclocks in updates.
  • Quest Model: Quest 2 64GB (Again... firmware issue. My headset fully works otherwise.)
  • Software Version Meta Quest Mobile App: 297.0.0.33.108
  • Software Version Meta Quest Headset: V72 (This is all it shows me)
  • Runtime Version: 5127210.8390.150
  • Any troubleshooting completed/or workarounds: EVERYTHING. Factory resetting multiple times, rebooting, enabling/disabling developer mode, uninstalling/reinstalling apps, disabling features, changing settings both inside the headset and on PCVR apps, contacting support, fully depleting battery then recharging, and multiple more procedures I can't even remember at this point.

To say I'm unhappy is a massive understatement.

Can confirm still an issue on V72 Quest Pro.  Been a problem since I got this headset 8 months ago.  Meta, come on.
