Meta Quest Remote Desktop.exe crashing in background

After the recent update, my cursor constantly flashes the working in the background circle. In task manager 'Meta Quest Remote Desktop.exe flashes then suspends followed by a windows problem reporting and repeat. I uninstalled the software and reinstalled it from the website and the issue started up again as soon as the install was complete. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Delete 'RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe' from Program Files/Oculus/Support/oculus-remote-desktop

Another spyware from Meta. You can't even kill this app in process manager while is running (it autorun). Solution is to rename oculus-remote-desktop directory everytime when new update is installed.

I also have the problem. it's sad that this still hasn't been fixed after more than two months.

I have the same problem. Luckily my mouse pointer constantly flashing the hourglass cursor lets me know when Meta has decided to update the app again! (so I can search google and remind myself what folder I need to delete)... It's a feature.

Can confirm that this problem still occurs after the current update (2025-02-25).  While RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe does appear to have changed size, the crashing problem remains.  Renamed and awaiting fix.

Seems to be finally fixed in recent 74.0.0.675.347 update.

I have had file version 8.0.0.30 since 2024 until the 2-19-2025 update...
A few weeks ago on 3-13-2025, i got file version 16.0.0.110 but the bug was still there and I renamed the file again.
Unsure which you are refering to as "74.0.0.675.347 update", perhaps its staggered releases and I have not receive the latest one yet...

thx for that! 🙂

so yes I can confirm that this is the same version that i have, however the RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe that i received with that version is still causing issues with windows process that i had to remove the file while the service was off...

After the latest system update that came through on 2025-04-08 (Meta Quest Link App Version 76.0.0.452.315 (76.0.0.452.315)), this appears to be FIXED.

C:/Program Files/Oculus/Support/oculus-remote-desktop has a new file in it called MQRDCrashpadHandler.exe, alongside a new version of RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe.

I no longer see crashing/restarting of RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe, and Windows Event Viewer confirms that (no spamming of any crash events there).

Happened to me today after some update, have MQRDCrashpadHandler but still crashes infinitely before rename fix

For me it was "blocking" my RSS feed reader (omea).. preventing it from working because it was blocking the wait chain.. And while i did get the update (along with that new file), so far it seems to have fixed my issue... no idea if thats gonna stay that way...

I ALSO spoke too soon... lol... A few days after posting my last message, i double clicked on a link in my RSS feed application... and... nothing happened... so i went to the task manager and checked the "wait chain" -- and the remote desktop was blocking it... so i shut down the OVR service, deleted the 2 files, restarted the services, and its been working fine since... its crazy that they cannot seem to figure out how to program something that doesnt break people computers...

Funny, I updated all 3 machines to latest v76 and no problems.

Am using Rift-S.

What are your specs?

The PC is a i9 13900kf, RTX4090, 128gb ddr4 running on windows 11
The Quest 3 is connected via a long USB C with a separate charger so that I can play while it charges...

But the problem is really with the remote-Desktop.exe that keeps running in the background even when not in use.. In my case its not "crashing" but it is blocking my Omea RSS feed program... (It's not the first time that old program has issue with badly programmed software, so it probably shares at least half of the blame) -- Whenever I have remote-desktop running in the background (not even using VR at all), if I click on a link in the rss viewer, nothing happens... then i go into the task manager, and "analyze wait chain" and i see that Remote Desktop is preventing Omea from working... as soon as the file is gone, no more problems. I had the same problem with 1 android emulator a while ago and stopped using it because of that.
