Meta Quest update button not doing anything after PTC V66

Im on ptc v66 and I got the update for the official rollout of v66. When I click update the download progress pops up for a second and goes away. The button to update is greyed out and stuck “updating…” I’ve let it sit for quite a while. Reset several times and nothing. If you leave update and go back it has the option to update now again. Resets do nothing

Good afternoon, on Wednesday I got the V66 update weighing 1.21gb. But with all the problems I've read I didn't update. Today I turn on the Quest 3 and I get a 7.61 MB update. Should I update? I am currently on V66 PTC and the version I have is V 66.0.0.547.370. That said, should I update?

The problem started with the small update, the big one is what solved it.
But the since is a related with your current version, the update files are delta patchs, therefore it just include what changed since your current fw

So, you recommend not updating and waiting for the next update, right?

Husband did a factory reset before I found this info.  They were unable to do the update, so resorted to the reset

ok, and what do you do now if you have performed a factory reset? Is there already a solution for this?

I bought a new quest 3, and after inputting my Wifi credentials manually within the VR (the first option), I would get "Applying software update", where it jumps to 100% immediately (without appearing to download anything). Entering wifi credentials manually in the VR using the controllers seemed to be the root cause of my boot looping.

After I performing a factory reset, I used the QR Code option (second option) to connect to my Wifi, and it started properly downloading the update, and no more bootlooping and I was finally able to use my Quest 3.

I went to the store to replace my first Quest 3 after the bootloop issue, and it had the 2024/03 mfg date. The replacement had the original 2023/10 mfg. date, they both had this same issue where it would lead to boot looping after manually entering the wifi credentials. I did not try the QR code option on the 2024/03 mfg date device, so I'm not 100% sure it will solve the issue for those devices too, but maybe someone who has a 2024/03 manufactured Quest 3 can report back on this.

Hope this helps someone!

I'm on v66 and can not update to v69. The update button turns disabled and is stuck at "updating". Restarting the Quest 3 did nothing, still forever updating.

Hello there!

It can be a total pain if you have been running into brick walls trying to update to the latest version, and it just doesn't want to play ball!

However, good news is we can provide a solution to the issue, where you can manually force an update.

Use the following steps to force the headset to update to the latest software version.

  1. Back up data. Use cloud backup to ensure your device’s app data, like app progress or app settings, is saved in the cloud.
  2. Power off your device. Press and hold the Power button located on the right side of the headset to power off your device.
  3. Load the boot screen. Press and hold both the Power and Volume Down buttons until you see the USB Update Mode Menu. When you see the USB Update Mode Menu, release the Power and Volume Down buttons immediately.
  4. Select Sideload update. On the boot screen, use the Volume buttons to navigate to Sideload update. Then press the Power button to select it. Once selected, remove your headset.
  5. Load the software update tool. On a computer, load the software update tool webpage using a compatible web browser (Chrome, Edge, or Opera).
  6. Connect your device. Use the USB-C cable that came with your device to connect it to the computer. If you’re using an Elite Strap, ensure the cable is connected to your headset and not the strap. Then click the "Connect device" button on the tool's webpage.

Hopefully that should provide a solution for you.

Let us know how it goes, or if we can help with anything else.

Thanks!

Thanks for the help. In the end it worked automatically with the normal update process. I just connected it to the power supply and let it idle for 1-2 hours.

But then I wanted to shut down the quest and another update window popped up that I couldn't shut down the quest because of an update.... another like 1-2 hours wait and now it seems like it's working.

We have the problem with at least 3 devices. We have followed your solution but we systematically have this error:

Hey Mediafaune  , I solved the issue today on my end.

The headset AND the sideload app hung and errored out when trying to download over my broadband line.

For me, connecting the headset to my phone via hotspot and downloading over my mobile network allowed both my PC and the headset to progress the download and complete it.  My headset's now unbricked.

Appears there's something going on with the connection to Meta's servers over certain providers today

Hopefully this can help you out as well!

Same problems here..

Essentially a bricked Meta Quest.

Factory Reset => Connect Wifi => Stuck <10% most of the time.

Factory Reset => Sideload => Crash at 21%.

Tried Wifi, Hotspot, everything.

Great piece of hardware.

I finally managed to use the sideload. But I'm in France, so I used a VPN to get a USA IP.
Glad to have found a solution but my day is lost...

Thanks a lot!

Brand new quest, and it stops updating, showing 38 minutes. What is going on?

Got a DM on Twitter back from Meta, saying that the engineering team are aware of this emerging issue and that they're working on a fix
