My quest 3 isn't charging with my link cable and I've had no problem doing it with quest 2 but it just stays at the same percentage.. I haven't tried the charger the comes in the box but It should be charging.

Hey everyone! I've gotten confirmation from the engineering and product team. It looks like when in use, the headset may adjust the charging rate to optimize battery performance based on factors such as temperature. For safety and performance reasons, your headset’s battery also may not fully charge if it is plugged in while in use and exceeds the optimal charging temperature. Once the device is no longer in use and its temperature has returned to normal, your device should resume charging to 100% while plugged in to charge.
When plugged into a laptop/PC, using a USB port that is not Power Delivery-compatible and capable of 18W+ will slow down charging.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to the support team through PM or back in this thread. We appreciate all feedback!

Hi there S15XE! We hope you're having an amazing day today! We know it's never fun to experience any issues with charging our devices, so we would love to help you get this fixed up. So the Link cable was not designed to charge the Quest 3, but it may help hold charge while plugged in. Please go ahead and use the charger that came with your device in order to properly get it charged up without any damages. We hope this answers any questions you may have had but if not, don't hesitate to reach back out to us at any time. Have a wonderful rest of your day!

Please explain how on earth the link cable was designed to charge the quest 2 but not quest 3. This does not at all seem accurate as this issue here seems software related on the quest 3.

If the quest 3 is not able to maintain a charge while over link cable connected to a pcie stata powered card even, then please explain what is different. Sure there is a different SoC but by no means is it noted anywhere that it's not possible to keep it charged like you could a quest 2. I could have my quest 2 at 5% at max settings and be actively playing and it will charge it up to 100 while in use even.

The quest 2 cable works fine for charging. I've been using it since I got the quest 3. The quest 3 cable is still in the box. It is the quest 2 wall wart adapter that is the issue. I believe the quest 3 uses the 9V mode of USB-C power delivery, and the quest 2 wall wart does not support it.

I've charged the quest 3 from the quest 3 wall wart, a 45W wall wart that I bought off of Amazon, and from a ROMOSS sense 8+ battery, all using the quest 2 cable. All three of those can charge the quest 3 battery.

If you are asking why the quest 3 needs more power to charge than the quest 2, that is a fair enough question, but we see it all the time. The iPad2 charger would not charge an iPad air. It seems like things naturally progress to need more and more power.

I have the exact same issue, my quest 2 would slowly charge with the link cable connected to the PC when the headset was off. With my quest 3 connected to PC via the link cable with the headset off my battery percentage remains the same. I even left my computer on for 5 hours with no change in battery percentage. On my Quest 2 it would be fully charged in that amount of time.

Hi there JJW033! Thank you for reaching out to us in regards to this issue as well. To make sure there are no issues and no damage is done, please make sure to charge the Quest 3 using the charger that came included with your device as the Link cable was not designed to charge the device. We hope this helps you get the device charged up but please feel free to reach back out to us if you are still having issues charging the device. Have an awesome day!

I noticed that the quest 3 wall wart was rated higher than that for the quest 2, and supports a 9v output where the quest 2 doesn't. Not sure it needs the 9v, but sounds like it might. The quest 3 wall wart can charge my ROMOSS in turbo mode while the quest 2 wall wart can not.

[NOT A SOLUTION] - **Just having to mark this as the solution so that everyone can find the updates quicker**

Hey everyone! This has been bubbling up a bit so wanted to let you all know I'll be sharing it with the team. In the meantime, I do want to get some in-depth information for them

Could everyone with this issue please answer these questions:

  1. What's the full version number of your headset? (57.0.0.####### or likewise)
    • Quick Settings > System > Software Update
  2. What's the full version number of your PC app? (57.0.0.####### or likewise)
    • General > Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
  3. Is your PC app on PTC?
  4. Any potential workarounds?
  5. Are you using an official link cable, or a 3rd party cable?

Thanks!

  1. What's the full version number of your headset? --  57.0.0.297.669.526537896
  2. What's the full version number of your PC app? -- 59.0.0.113.366
  3. Is your PC app on PTC? -- I've tried both, live version and PTC and get same result. Would try PTC on headset but looks like that one is full.
  4. Any potential workarounds? -- none. It seems like the headset is capping itself at the amount of watts it will try and pull from a card honestly when connected over link cable vs doing same thing with an external battery pack that has same specs. Playing pcvr over airlink with battery pack that has 5V 3amps (15W) it will charge the headset up from being at 40% no issue. Plugged into a powered pci-e card with same power specs it will not do that and will still slowly drain. It's only charging at the rate the quest2 required to charge at to charge up while over link cable it seems.

Thanks for this! I'll get it passed over to the team.

I did want to ask though, does the Quest 2 'charge' (in a sense of gaining power as you play), or does the link cable prolong the battery life and have it drain slower than normal? (Or is it something different entirely?)

Just asking so I can have the right insight for them.

There are already a few problems that I can List with my quest 3, such as the pass-through, though it is grainier than what is in their marketing campaign trailers. Though I love many aspects of the Quest 3, my main problem is the battery life. Though I don't blame Meta for the battery being smaller or that the Quest is more power-hungry, it is ridiculous that I can only play on it for about 2hr while plugging it into my PC while using it. I'll go from 100% to 50% in over half the time Quest 2 did, meaning I get much less playtime. With my Quest 2, I could typically get 4-6 hours of gameplay out of it due to it charging from being linked to my PC, but this headset will not charge quickly enough for this to be viable, which is almost absurd.
The charging on this thing is so bad that even with a higher-watt power block I use will take over 4 hours to charge from 20% to 100%. That is at least double the time it would take my Quest on similar workloads, but at least my Quest 2 wouldn't get that low as it would charge at a higher speed than it could utilize.
I understand this is a new product, but this has to be a software issue. So please fix this, as it puts a damper and a hindrance on your claims for this to be an excellent headset for both standalone and PCVR.

Yeah, I'm not too fond of the rapid battery drain myself.  I have a BoboVR battery strap / pack.  With the Quest 2, it slowly replenishes the battery no matter what I'm doing.  I decided to experiment and remove the battery dock and strap it onto the Quest 3's default head strap.  Instead of a slow replenishment of battery life, the Quest 3's battery continues to deplete over time...about 1% every 5-10 minutes.  The Quest 2 would gain about 1% every 2-3 minutes with the same battery pack.

I'd like to see Meta push out an update to hopefully improve battery life...because right now, I'm not sure the extra performance and graphical fidelity is worth the faster battery drain.

I am using Quest3 for a long time, so please tell me how to use Quest Link while charging it.

I play racing games, because even the slightest unstable connection is unacceptable.

thank you.

Hi, I have the same problem here.
I'm using the free version of Immersed, lowered the brightness of the whole Meta Quest 3 to 30%, bluetooth off and in VR with fixed position guardian to avoid consuming with cameras (all portals off). Frequency is set to the minimum, and the battery drains quickly.

After 28 minutes of usage with the original charger and an 1.5 meters thunderbolt cable (USB-C and Power/Data compatible) It dropped to 85%.

I believe a good scenario would be to have it last almost 4hs with charger connected, and have it connected during lunch to continue working the remaining 4 hours (the math works).

But best case scenario I would be happy with would be with bright at 50% and mixed reality on, using a long cable (3 to 5 meters) and the wall charger.
That would actually allow me to replace the laptop with the headset and that would be awesome.

Additional note: I tried working with the laptop connected to the wall (charges with Thunderbolt) and a thunderbolt port connected with the original cable to the headset.

The laptop charges awfully low, and the headset gets more juice. But I don't know how harmful that would be to the laptop's battery or the headset one during an extended period of time.
