My quest 3 isn't charging with my link cable and I've had no problem doing it with quest 2 but it just stays at the same percentage.. I haven't tried the charger the comes in the box but It should be charging.

Hey everyone! I've gotten confirmation from the engineering and product team. It looks like when in use, the headset may adjust the charging rate to optimize battery performance based on factors such as temperature. For safety and performance reasons, your headset’s battery also may not fully charge if it is plugged in while in use and exceeds the optimal charging temperature. Once the device is no longer in use and its temperature has returned to normal, your device should resume charging to 100% while plugged in to charge.
When plugged into a laptop/PC, using a USB port that is not Power Delivery-compatible and capable of 18W+ will slow down charging.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to the support team through PM or back in this thread. We appreciate all feedback!

Ok peeps, here is what happened when testing last night.

I started out jumping right into trying the link cable after I verified that the headset received v60. I plugged in the original Q3 wall charger into my cable and then into the Q3. Q3 started charging but my pc would not show up in the link page. So I rebooted my pc and tried again. Still no go. I changed the cable over to a different USB port and again, the Q3 was receiving power but not recognizing the link connection to the pc.

At that point I disconnected the power supply from the cable and wanted to just play. Now the cable straight up wouldn't be detected in the link page without the power supply. I'm pretty frustrated at this point and when all else fails... it's time to factory reset.

So... after the factory reset is done and I have the Q3 linked back to my phone app, the freaking thing works. When you go through the factory setup and connect the link for the first time, it asks you if you want to allow the connection. The first time it popped up, I only had the cable connected without the power supply. I accepted that connection first. When I connected the link cable with the power supply, it popped up another acknowledge message about the link connection and I accepted that one as well.

It's as smooth as you would expect it to be. I played Contractors for probably 2 hours and per the cable manufactures specs page, the cable regulated itself to holding at 75% and sure enough the battery was sitting at 75%.

Some things that I would be interested in know at this point are:

  • Does doing a factory reset on a headset prior to v60 actually correct the link problem
  • Does this correct the charging issue for people using the standard cable with no power injection port
  • Does this fix work for multiple people

For those that don't know how to factory reset your Q3, you can find the instructions here:
Reset Quest 3

I chose to reset directly on the headset by holding the power and vol down. It's a little tricky if you hold the buttons too long, when you release the buttons it actually just reboots the headset. You literally only hold the buttons for like 1 second and release then you should see the really really close and bright blue menu lol. Reset only took about a minute. Pretty quick and painless.

I will continue to test out this situation and cross my fingers that the issue is resolved.

Update from playing last night. When I started playing Contractors last night my Q3 had been on it's wall mount and not plugged in. When I connected it to the link it got the link connection right away and showed that it was charging as well. It was at 74% battery at that time. I think I played Contractors for roughly 2.5 hours. I jumped into VRChat after that and played for another 2.5 hours. Right before I was going to get offline I got the ding that my battery was getting low.

Something to note, In the Oculus app I also bumped up my native resolution to 1.2x so this may have caused the bump in power draw. I definitely got a heck of a lot of game time with the power cable connected. I left my Q3 connected to the cable overnight and it is back to 100% charge this morning.

I have an Anker 35w power supply that I'm going to try tonight and see if the power draw goes from negative to positive.

Good to hear that!

I hope you get good results. I understand that there might be a limitation when you use it connected to keep the battery up to 75% of charge to keep the battery from damage.

Which cable are you using?

Did the v60 update fix the issue?
I am thinking about buying a Quest 3 but after reading all of this, I am now in serious doubt if that would be the right choice. If I only get 2 hours of playtime while connected via USB-C cable to my pc for PC VR, then thats a dealbraker.

I am using a USB3.2 gen1 A to C 5m cable, 3a. I have plugged the Quest 3 in my laptop ( legion 7i ) while it was turned off. I checked the battery and it was at 41% and it had the charging animation. 2-3 hours later the battery was at 38%.

Even it there is no fast charging, in this case a slow charging should have still charged it as it was turned off, but it didn't. Also why display charging animation if it is discharging? We need explanations Meta !

I would be happy if it just maintained or lost 3 percent per hour. I have tried both the OEM and and inject cable from the 18w charger. still loses power on cable faster than is ok for flight sim.

Has anyone else noticed changes made to charging the Quest 3 in version 60.

Specifically, that the headset will not charge at all when connected to a power source lower than PD compliant 18W.
Prior to version 60, the headset would charge albeit slowly on a regular 5V USB-A charger (plug socket USB port).

Likewise, it would change when connected to a my PC on a quest link cable.
It would still drain very slowly when playing a PCVR game because the consumption is higher than the quest link cable supplies, but would last 6+ hours. And if switched off while connected to the quest link cable, it would eventually fully charge.

The change I have noticed since version 60, is that the headset will simply not charge at all unless its connected to a PD rated 18W or higher charger.
Which now means that while playing PCVR games connected to a PC using the quest link cable, it now drains as fast as it would if were not connected to a USB cable at all.

My old Quest 2 seems unaffected by this - still charges as normal with the quest link cable.

And this is really not cool, in fact I would have returned the device if it were the case from day 1.
they have removed the workaround of having such a weak battery, presumably to sell more of their grossly overpriced battery head straps. Is Zuckerberg so desperate for cash?

Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes I've noticed the change.

I'm using a USB-C 22w hub that has a watt meter on it (I have two identical hubs and have tested both). I'm not sure if it's an intentional change or a bug but since v60, the headset begins to charge at about 22w while the headset is outside of the boundary, but as soon as it's brought into the boundary, the headset appears to reset the charge connection and it drops back to around 10watts charge. So at best, now it will only maintain the current charge instead of topping it up to between 85-100%

I have the same issue.

I have the link cable plug-in into USB 3 gen2 PC port.

1. The charging works while NOT using a Quest Link. So the charing with PC is possible, however:

2. If I connect with quest link and leave the headset in stand-by mode sometimes it charges slowly, sometimes it doesnt?

3. During an active quest link session its hard for me to say if its charging or not since neither Oculus Desktop app nor Oculur VR interface show a charging animation (not even sure if those two apps can show a charging animation at all).

TLDR - it sounds like a software / driver issue and not a hardware issue. The charging works under some circumstances, and not in others. This is very confusing for users and bad consumer experience for PCVR users.

Wow i'm glad i found this thread right away. Cancelling my quest 3 order now... Gonna pick a pcvr only headset i guess.

It's just so frustrating that you spent billions for research and development and came out with this piece of garbage. And I hope those poor guys who are forced to use 45 watt chargers don't burn their devices.

symptomx42 Just to let you know I got mine to work great with that cable and 45w charger, goes forever. The new BOBOVR headstrap has batteries that you can swap out to run it wireless for an unlimited amount of time too. It's a great headset for PCVR.

Hey all followers of this thread. Just wanted to jump back in since I last posted. I've been using the Quest 3 with the INIU Link Cable and the 45W Anker Nano II Charger after the v62 update and I have had absolutely zero problems with the wired link connection or charging the headset. I play iRacing nightly and I get solid performance and battery power is always in the positive even after my daughter plays beat saber and leaves the headset at 2% battery lol. Plug it in and it's solid and by the time I'm done racing the headset is at least at 50% charge.

I do still have my issues with Meta and I wish the USB C cable was a display cable but it seems other PCVR headsets are going this way too. For the price point you can't beat it unfortunately. I haven't tried the original non-powered link cable so I can't say if that charges or not. Hopefully this has helped some people out in the long run.

Could you detail the process you use when starting up your PC, quest 3, and the INIU cable? I have the same as you and usually only get 1/2 hour for ever 10-12 percent of quest battery.

Well, I’m running windows 11 pro. I did actually forget to mention this but I also use a usb c adapter and I’m connecting to my motherboards usb c header that goes to a single port usb c.

I don’t really do anything extra. I run avast av and some other stuff like steam, discord, epic games client, mess like that.

i think I recall having more issues when I used the usb a connector to my motherboard now that I think about it.

Here are all the parts I referenced:

I used a USB tester.

From the power supply, the measured current around 2A is the same using the link cable as it is for the charging cable, although the link cable has a little more voltage drop. Any statement that the link cable is not for charging is cr@p.

When plugged into the PC with the link cable, the voltage increases and current drops to almost zero. That means the PC is giving the voltage but the quest is not using it. Why? There is absolutely no good reason for this. I could understand they may want to reduce charging to reduce heat while using, but if I plug the link cable into the charger while using the quest, it will charge, so that eliminates that argument.

Not one reasonable explanation has been given for this issue. The only solution is to use airlink and use the link cable to charge from the charger. That cable is way too expensive with this limitation. Everyone should be refunded.
